Why Nine Factors, Not One

A single strong indicator — an excellent Lagna, say — is not enough on its own to call a moment a strong muhurat, and this is precisely where many simplified online tools fall short. Factor 1 — Lagna Nakshatra Quality

The Lagna is not just a sign like Aries or Cancer — every rising degree also falls inside one of the 27 Nakshatras, and this Nakshatra carries its own classical character. Some Nakshatras, including Pushya, Rohini and Hasta, are traditionally read as steadier and more supportive starting points across many kinds of beginnings, birth included, while others carry more volatile or transitional classical significations. This factor checks which Nakshatra and which of its four padas the Lagna falls into at the exact candidate minute, and scores it against these traditional readings. It is worth noting this is the softest of the nine factors in isolation — a good Lagna Nakshatra with a poor Lagna lord placement will not save an otherwise weak chart, and a less-favoured Nakshatra with strong supporting factors elsewhere is not written off. Factor 2 — Lagna Lord's House Placement

Every rising sign has a ruling planet — Mars for Aries, the Moon for Cancer, and so on — and where that Lagna lord sits relative to the Lagna itself is one of the most load-bearing checks in the entire method. A Lagna lord placed in a Kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) or a Trikona house (1st, 5th or 9th) is read as structurally strong, because Kendras anchor a chart and Trikonas are classically the houses of fortune and dharma. A Lagna lord falling into a Dusthana — the 6th, 8th or 12th house — weakens this factor considerably, regardless of how good the Lagna's own Nakshatra looked in Factor 1. Factor 3 — Lagna Lord's Dignity

Beyond which house the Lagna lord sits in, its dignity — how comfortable it is in the sign it currently occupies — matters just as much. A planet exalted, or seated in its own sign, is at its classical strongest. One in a friendly sign is comfortably placed. One debilitated, or seated in an enemy's sign, is considered weak regardless of house placement, and a debilitated Lagna lord in an otherwise strong Kendra house is still read as a meaningful caution, not a strength. Combust planets — those sitting too close to the Sun — lose additional strength here too. This factor and Factor 2 work together rather than separately, and both combinations pull the overall Lagna-strength score down from what either factor alone would suggest. Factor 4 — 8th House Affliction Check

The 8th house — the Randhra Sthana, governing longevity, transformation and sudden events — receives dedicated scrutiny separate from the general Lagna-strength checks above, because it is specifically the factor most commonly skipped by generic online muhurat tools. Trikaal Vaani checks the 8th house lord's placement, whether natural malefics — Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu — occupy the 8th house itself at the candidate moment, and whether any benefic aspect reaches it to soften the effect. A heavily afflicted 8th house pulls the overall score down meaningfully, as a preference exercised when a genuine choice of minute exists — never as a claim about a newborn's actual health or safety, which this factor does not and cannot speak to. Factor 5 — Benefics in Kendra or Trikona

With the Lagna's own structure assessed in Factors 1 through 4, the method shifts to checking the wider chart for supportive influence. Factor five checks whether Jupiter, Venus, or a well-placed, unafflicted Mercury — the three natural benefics in Jyotish — occupy a Kendra or Trikona house relative to the Lagna at the candidate moment. A benefic sitting in one of these load-bearing houses adds genuine supportive strength to the chart as a whole. The absence of any benefic in these houses is not automatically a weakness — it simply means this particular factor contributes less positive weight to the overall score, leaving the other eight factors to carry more of the assessment.

Factor 6 — Chandra Bal (Moon Strength)

Chandra Bal, the Moon's strength at the candidate moment, is evaluated by its house position from the Lagna and its own condition — whether it is waxing or waning, which sign it occupies, and whether any malefic aspect afflicts it. In Jyotish, the Moon governs the mind and early emotional temperament, so a well-placed, unafflicted Moon is treated as meaningfully favourable for a birth moment specifically. A Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, or heavily afflicted, reduces this factor's contribution. Because the Moon moves through roughly one sign every two and a quarter days, this factor can shift meaningfully across even a single approved delivery window that spans two or three days.

Factor 7 — Shubh Yoga Presence

Classical Muhurta Shastra names a number of specific planetary combinations, or Yogas, as either auspicious or inauspicious for beginning anything significant. This factor checks whether an inauspicious Yoga — such as Vyatipata or Parigha — is active at the candidate moment, and whether a more favourable combination is present instead. An inauspicious Yoga at the exact candidate minute is treated as a meaningful caution in the overall score, similar in weight to Rahu Kaal though calculated independently of it, since the two do not always coincide. This is one of the less commonly checked factors on generic muhurat tools, largely because it requires precise planetary longitude calculation rather than a simplified almanac lookup.

Factor 8 — Tithi (Purna vs Rikta)

The Tithi, or lunar day, is checked for whether it falls on a Purna Tithi — a full, undivided lunar day — or a Rikta Tithi, specifically the 4th, 9th or 14th of each lunar fortnight. Rikta means empty or incomplete, and classical Muhurta tradition advises against beginning significant undertakings, childbirth included, on these three specific Tithis where avoidable. A candidate minute falling on a Rikta Tithi loses some ground on this factor, though it is not automatically disqualifying the way Rahu Kaal is — it contributes negatively to the weighted score rather than excluding the moment outright.

Factor 9 — Rahu Kaal Avoidance

Rahu Kaal is the one factor treated as a hard exclusion rather than a weighted contribution. This roughly ninety-minute inauspicious period occurs once daily, at a different time depending on the weekday, and classical Muhurta tradition advises against beginning any significant undertaking within it. Trikaal Vaani's calculator automatically excludes any candidate minute falling inside Rahu Kaal, regardless of how strongly that minute scores on the other eight factors — an exceptional Lagna and a perfectly placed Moon do not overcome a Rahu Kaal clash. This is the most consistently applied rule across Vedic Muhurta tradition generally, which is why it is treated differently from the other eight, weighted factors.

How the Score Is Weighted — A Worked Example

To see all nine factors working together: imagine a candidate moment with an excellent Lagna Nakshatra (Factor 1, strong), a Lagna lord in a Kendra house (Factor 2, strong), but in a neutral rather than exalted sign (Factor 3, moderate), a calm 8th house with no malefic occupation (Factor 4, strong), no benefic in Kendra or Trikona at that specific moment (Factor 5, neutral), a well-placed unafflicted Moon (Factor 6, strong), no specific Yoga active either way (Factor 7, neutral), a Purna Tithi (Factor 8, strong), and confirmed clear of Rahu Kaal (Factor 9, passed). This combination would typically score in the strong-to-excellent range. A chart scoring only moderately overall is usually one where two or three factors land in genuinely weak territory simultaneously, most often a poorly dignified Lagna lord combined with 8th-house affliction, rather than any single factor alone. Why This Differs From a Static Panchang-Based Muhurat List

A printed or app-based Panchang typically lists auspicious and inauspicious windows for an entire day, or at best breaks a day into a handful of broad blocks — useful for many traditional purposes, but too coarse for child birth muhurat, where the difference between two candidate minutes forty minutes apart can shift the Lagna, the Nakshatra pada, and several other factors simultaneously. Trikaal Vaani's calculator computes planetary longitudes fresh for the exact minute and exact city entered, using Swiss Ephemeris astronomical data rather than a pre-generated table, which is what allows it to score two closely spaced hospital-offered slots differently and honestly rather than lumping an entire morning into one generic verdict. This precision is also why location matters: the same clock time in Delhi and in Chennai can correspond to a meaningfully different Lagna, since Lagna calculation depends on exact latitude and longitude, not just the time zone. None of this replaces classical judgement — it simply lets the nine factors above be checked at the resolution the original Muhurta Shastra texts always assumed, but that a monthly printed list cannot practically offer.
