Gudi Padwa marks the start of the Hindu lunar year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, traditionally regarded as the day Lord Brahma created the universe and set time in motion. In Maharashtra it is also tied to the legend of Shalivahana and the valour of the Marathas. The gudi — a bamboo pole dressed in bright cloth, neem and mango leaves, garlanded and crowned with an upturned kalash — is raised at the doorway as a dhwaj of triumph, prosperity and protection from evil. Falling at the turn of spring and harvest, it is counted among the saadhe-teen muhurat, the three-and-a-half most auspicious moments of the year, when new ventures and beginnings are believed to flourish.
