The Short Answer: The Chart Is Accurate, the Reading Is Not

There are two separate things inside every free Kundli report and they have completely different accuracy. The chart, meaning the planetary longitudes, the Lagna and the house layout, is usually accurate, because it comes from a standard astronomical ephemeris and arithmetic does not vary by website. The reading attached underneath it is almost never accurate in any meaningful sense, because it is template text selected by placement alone. Nobody says this out loud because both halves arrive in one PDF and look like one product. Separating them is the most useful thing you can do before spending money on astrology, and this page shows you exactly how to test the difference on any report, including ours.

What a Free Kundli Generator Actually Computes

Given a date, time and place, the software converts local time to Universal Time, computes the Julian Day, looks up each planet tropical longitude from an ephemeris, subtracts an ayanamsha value to convert to the sidereal zodiac, computes the Ascendant from the local sidereal time and latitude, and assigns houses. It then derives the Moon nakshatra and starts the Vimshottari Dasha clock. Every one of these steps is deterministic mathematics with a correct answer. If the inputs are right, the output is right. Where the Planetary Positions Come From

Almost all serious astrology software, free and paid, ultimately draws on the same source: the Swiss Ephemeris, which is derived from NASA JPL planetary data. This is why the same chart on three good websites shows planetary degrees within a fraction of each other. When you see a large discrepancy, the cause is almost never the ephemeris. It is one of three things: a different ayanamsha setting, a different house system, or an input that was entered differently, most often the birth place resolving to a different set of coordinates. Knowing this saves a lot of pointless worry about which website is right.

Swiss Ephemeris Versus Approximation Tables

A small number of low-quality tools still use simplified planetary tables or interpolation rather than a full ephemeris. The error is small for the slow planets and larger for the Moon, which moves about thirteen degrees a day and can therefore land in the wrong nakshatra if computed roughly. That matters more than it sounds, because the Moon nakshatra sets your entire Vimshottari Dasha sequence. A Moon in the wrong nakshatra means every Dasha date in the report is wrong. If a free tool cannot tell you which ephemeris it uses, that is a reasonable reason to use a different one.

Ayanamsha: The One Setting That Changes Everything

Sidereal astrology subtracts an offset called the ayanamsha from tropical positions. Lahiri, also called Chitrapaksha, is the Indian government standard and what most Indian software uses. Raman, Krishnamurti and others differ from Lahiri by a degree or more. A one degree difference will not usually move a planet between signs, but it absolutely can when a planet sits near a sign boundary, and it can move the Lagna, and it changes every Dasha balance calculation. If two reports disagree about your Moon sign, check the ayanamsha before assuming one is broken. We use Lahiri throughout, and we state it rather than leaving it as a hidden setting.

Why Two Free Sites Show Different Charts for the Same Birth

Four causes, in order of frequency. One, different birth place coordinates, because the site geocoded your town to a district centre. Two, a different ayanamsha. Three, whole sign houses versus Bhava Chalit cusps, which moves planets between houses without moving them between signs. Four, a time zone or daylight saving handling error for older birth dates, which is a real problem for births in India before nineteen forty five and for anyone born abroad. None of these is mysticism. All four are settings, and all four are checkable.

The Birth Time Problem No Software Can Solve

The Ascendant moves roughly half a degree per minute, so a new sign rises about every two hours. If your birth time came from memory rather than a record, every house in your chart may be rotated. No software can detect this, because software cannot know that your input was a guess. This is the single largest source of wrong astrology readings in India and it has nothing to do with the quality of the tool. Before you judge any report, free or paid, establish whether your birth time came from a hospital record, a certificate, or somebody recollecting decades later. What Happens After the Chart Is Drawn: The Template Layer

Once the chart exists, the report needs words. The overwhelmingly common approach is a lookup table. The software checks which planet is in which house, retrieves a pre-written paragraph for that combination, and concatenates the results. There may be a few hundred paragraphs covering nine planets across twelve houses, twelve signs, and a handful of standard yogas. This is not fraud and nobody is hiding it; it is simply the only way to produce unlimited reports at zero marginal cost. But it means the paragraph about Mars in your seventh house is the identical paragraph shown to every other person with Mars in the seventh.

How Template Text Is Built, and What It Cannot Know

A template is written to be true for as many charts as possible, which forces it toward generality. It cannot mention that your Mars is combust, because most Mars are not. It cannot mention that your Mars owns your Lagna, because that depends on your Ascendant. It cannot say your Mars is running at a strength ratio of nought point six, because it never computed one. Everything specific has to be removed for the paragraph to be reusable. What remains is language that sounds insightful and commits to nothing, and that is a structural property of templates, not a failure of the person who wrote them.

Test One, the Lagna Test: Does the Text Know Your Ascendant

Here is the fastest audit. Find the passage about any planet in your report. Does it say what that planet owns for your Lagna? For a Karka Lagna native, Jupiter owns the sixth and ninth, which means the same planet governs debt and illness alongside fortune and dharma. If the report describes Jupiter purely as a benefic bringing wisdom and wealth, it has not used your Ascendant at all and everything downstream is generic. Test Two, the Dignity Test: Are Exalted and Debilitated Treated Differently

Check whether the report distinguishes a planet in its exaltation sign from the same planet in its debilitation sign, and whether it mentions the degree. An exalted planet has a peak degree; a planet in the exaltation sign but far from that degree is strong but not maximal. Also check whether Neecha Bhanga is even mentioned, because debilitation cancels under specific conditions and a report that pronounces doom on a cancelled debilitation is worse than no report. Most free reports flag exalted and debilitated as labels and then continue with the same paragraph either way.

Test Three, the Combustion Test: The Condition Nobody Mentions

Search your report for the word combust, or asta. A planet too close to the Sun loses most of its ability to deliver, and Mercury is combust in a large fraction of all charts because it never travels far from the Sun. Combustion is the honest explanation for the single most common complaint in astrology, which is that a chart promises something and life never delivered it. If a report tells you an exalted planet will give excellent results and never checks whether that planet is burnt, it has skipped one of the cheapest and most decisive tests in the system.

Test Four, the Strength Test: Adjectives or Numbers

Look for the words strong, weak and afflicted. Now look for a number beside them. Shadbala is the six-fold strength calculation from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, measured in virupas and compared against a classical minimum that differs for every planet, producing a ratio. A ratio is checkable and arguable. An adjective is not. This is the clearest single line between a computed reading and a described one, and it is why we publish the figures rather than the words. Test Five, the Aspect Test: Yes-No or Virupas

Does the report say Saturn aspects your tenth house, full stop? That sentence is incomplete. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra assigns each aspect a strength in virupas based on the exact angular separation between the two planets. An aspect at thirty degrees separation carries essentially no value; the same aspect at its classical point carries full value. Test Six, the Divisional Chart Test: D1 Only

Count the charts in your report. If there is only the Rashi chart, the D1, the analysis is incomplete by the standards of the tradition it claims to follow. The Navamsa D9 is the strength test on every planet and the primary chart for marriage. The Dasamsa D10 is named directly in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra as the chart for professional matters, so any career verdict that ignores it is unfinished. A planet exalted in the D1 and debilitated in the D9 is a promise that does not survive inspection, and that pattern alone explains a large share of disappointed clients.

Test Seven, the Dasha Test: Is There a Clock

Does the report say when? A reading without Vimshottari Dasha is a description of potential with no timing attached, which is why so many reports feel plausible and useless at the same time. Two people with nearly identical seventh houses marry at very different ages because their seventh lord periods arrive at different times. Check whether your report gives Mahadasha and Antardasha windows tied to the specific question, or merely lists the Dasha table at the back without connecting it to anything. Test Eight, the Cancellation Test: Doshas Without Bhanga

If the report announces Mangal Dosh, Kaal Sarp Dosh or Pitra Dosh, does it also examine the cancellation conditions? Every one of these has documented Bhanga rules in the classical texts, and the cancellation is as much a part of the shastra as the affliction. A report that names a dosh, describes its consequences, and offers a remedy without ever testing whether the dosh is cancelled is not following the tradition, it is selling. Audit Any Report in Two Minutes Using These Eight

Run the list in order. Does it use your Lagna for lordship. Does it distinguish dignity by degree and mention Neecha Bhanga. Does it check combustion. Does it give strength as a number. Does it give aspect strength or just the fact. Does it include D9 and D10. Does it tie predictions to Dasha windows. Does it test dosh cancellations. Score out of eight. Why Free Reports Feel Accurate Anyway

This is the part that deserves the most honesty, because free reports frequently do feel accurate and that feeling is real. Three things produce it. First, the chart underneath genuinely is your chart, so anything derived directly from structure will be correct. Second, generic statements about human life are true of most people, and we recognise ourselves in them. Third, we remember hits and forget misses. None of this means the report is worthless, but it does mean that feeling recognised is not evidence of accuracy, and that a report designed to produce recognition is a different product from one designed to produce a verdict.

There is now a third category and it deserves naming. Some reports are written by a person. Some are assembled from templates. And a growing number are generated by a language model that has been shown the chart and asked to write nicely. The third kind reads far better than templates and is in one specific way more dangerous, because a language model will produce fluent, confident, chart-shaped sentences whether or not the underlying computation was ever done. Fluency is not evidence of calculation. The eight tests on this page work on all three kinds, because they ask for numbers and cancellations rather than for quality of writing. What Free Kundli Software Is Genuinely Good For

Do not overcorrect into thinking free tools are useless. They are excellent for four things. Generating a correct chart to work from. Finding your Moon sign and nakshatra, which most people do not know accurately. Checking your current Mahadasha and Antardasha. Getting a binary structural answer such as whether all seven planets fall inside the Rahu-Ketu arc, which is a geometric fact and not an interpretation. Anything that is arithmetic rather than judgement is safe to take from a free tool, and that covers a great deal of what people actually want to know.

When You Should Not Pay Anyone Anything

Free Guna Milan scores are computed correctly as arithmetic, and they are also the least important part of a compatibility assessment. Ashtakoot examines the Moon nakshatra of two people. It does not examine the seventh house, the seventh lord, Venus, Mars placement, the Navamsa, or the Dasha sequences of either person. A high Guna score with a damaged seventh house in both charts is a bad match with a good number attached.
