What a Graha Actually Is, and Why the Translation Planet Is Misleading

Graha does not mean planet. It comes from the root meaning to grasp or to seize, and that is the whole idea: a Graha is an agent that takes hold of a part of your life and delivers a result there. This is why the Sun and Moon are counted as Grahas though neither is a planet, and why Rahu and Ketu are counted though they are mathematical points where the Moon orbit crosses the ecliptic and have no physical body at all. Classical Jyotish is not making an astronomy claim. It is naming nine forces that carry the karmic account. Once you stop reading Graha as planet, several things that look like errors in the tradition stop looking like errors, and the system becomes internally consistent. The Nine, and Why the Outer Planets Are Not Included

The nine are Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not part of Parashari Jyotish. This is a deliberate position, not an oversight of the ancients: the Vimshottari Dasha system runs on a hundred and twenty year cycle divided among exactly nine Grahas, the aspect rules are defined for these nine, Shadbala is computed for seven of them, and inserting three more would break the mathematics rather than enrich it. Some modern astrologers use the outer planets as a commentary layer. Trikaal Vaani does not, and the reason is simply that every classical rule we compute was written for nine, and mixing systems produces readings that cannot be traced back to any source.

Natural Nature and Functional Nature: The Fork Most Readings Miss

Every Graha has two natures and confusing them is the single most common source of wrong readings. Natural nature never changes: Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon and unafflicted Mercury are natural benefics; Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, waning Moon and afflicted Mercury are natural malefics. Functional nature changes completely with your Lagna, because it depends on which houses the planet owns. For a Vrishabha Lagna native, Saturn owns the 9th and 10th and becomes the best planet in the chart, better than Jupiter which owns the 8th and 11th there. Anyone who tells you Saturn is bad without asking your Lagna is reading a textbook, not your chart.

Benefic and Malefic Do Not Mean Good and Bad

The words mislead in English. A malefic is a planet that produces its result through friction, restriction or separation. A benefic produces its result through expansion, ease and support. Neither is inherently good for you. Saturn in the sixth house is a malefic doing exactly what you want it to do, grinding down opposition. Jupiter expanding a badly placed sixth house can expand your debts. In the Upachaya houses 3, 6, 10 and 11 malefics are actively preferable. So read the word malefic as by friction and benefic as by expansion, then ask whether that department needs friction or expansion. That one substitution improves a beginner reading more than almost any other habit.

Surya, the Sun: Soul, Father, Authority and Vitality

The Sun is the atma, the self and its will. It signifies the father, government and authority, bones and the right eye, status and recognition, and the basic vitality that keeps the body running. It owns Simha only, exalts in Mesha at ten degrees, falls in Tula. It is a natural malefic because it operates by burning away, which is also why it combusts planets that come too close to it. A strong Sun produces natural authority and a clear sense of direction; a weak Sun produces capability without recognition, which is one of the most frustrating chart patterns and one people rarely name correctly. Chandra, the Moon: Mind, Mother and the Second Ascendant

The Moon is the manas, the mind and emotional register, and it is the most important Graha after the Lagna lord in practical work. It signifies the mother, comfort, the public, liquids, the chest and the left eye. It owns Karka, exalts in Vrishabha at three degrees, falls in Vrishchika. Its unique feature is that its strength depends on phase rather than sign alone: a waxing Moon near full is a strong benefic, a waning Moon near new is functionally a malefic regardless of dignity. In Parashari practice the Moon sign is read as a second Ascendant, which is why almost every Hindi prediction and every Sade Sati calculation runs on the Moon and not the Lagna.

Mangal, Mars: Courage, Property, Siblings and Conflict

Mars is energy applied against resistance. It signifies courage, younger siblings, land and immovable property, engineering and surgery, blood and muscle, accidents and disputes. It owns Mesha and Vrishchika, exalts in Makara at twenty eight degrees, falls in Karka. It is the karaka of the third house for courage and of the fourth for property. Mars placement drives the Mangal Dosh calculation, which depends on Mars sitting in specific houses from the Lagna, Moon or Venus and which has a long list of documented cancellations, all covered on Mangal Dosh remedies. A well placed Mars is decisiveness; a badly placed Mars is friction that arrives before thought does.

Budh, Mercury: Intellect, Speech, Commerce and Nerves

Mercury is the processing layer. Analysis, speech and writing, trade and calculation, skin and nervous system, and the capacity to adapt. It owns Mithuna and Kanya, and unusually it both exalts and owns Kanya, exalting at fifteen degrees; it falls in Meena. Mercury is the only Graha whose natural nature is conditional: alone or with benefics it is benefic, with malefics it takes their colour. It is also the closest planet to the Sun and therefore the most frequently combust planet in charts, which matters because a combust Mercury shows as sharp thinking that does not convert into recognised output. Sun and Mercury together form Budhaditya Yoga, real but often weakened by that same combustion.

Guru, Jupiter: Wisdom, Wealth, Children and Dharma

Jupiter is expansion and grace. It signifies wisdom, teachers, wealth in the accumulated sense, children, dharma and law, the liver and fat tissue, and in classical texts the husband in a female chart. It owns Dhanu and Meena, exalts in Karka at five degrees, falls in Makara. Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic and its aspect on any house is classically protective, which is why the 5th and 9th aspects of Jupiter matter so much in practice. But remember functional nature: for Vrishabha and Tula Lagna natives Jupiter owns two difficult houses and is a functional malefic despite its natural goodness. This is precisely the case where generic content and a real reading part ways.

Shukra, Venus: Marriage, Comfort, Art and Desire

Venus is attraction and refinement. It signifies the spouse in a male chart, marriage generally, comfort and luxury, art music and beauty, vehicles, reproductive health and the kidneys. It owns Vrishabha and Tula, exalts in Meena at twenty seven degrees, falls in Kanya. Venus is the karaka of the seventh house, so a marriage reading always checks the 7th house, the 7th lord and Venus as three separate pieces of evidence. A strong Venus with a weak 7th means capacity for relationship without a stable structure for it; a strong 7th with a damaged Venus means the structure holds but the warmth is thin. Shani, Saturn: Time, Discipline, Delay and Endurance

Saturn is the slow grinder and the most misrepresented Graha in commercial astrology. It signifies time itself, discipline, labour, longevity, servants and the working class, sorrow, and everything that arrives late and lasts. It owns Makara and Kumbha, exalts in Tula at twenty degrees, falls in Mesha. Saturn is a natural malefic that operates by restriction, and restriction is often exactly what a department needs, which is why Saturn in the Upachaya houses is genuinely desirable. Rahu, the North Node: Amplified Desire Without Direction

Rahu is the ascending lunar node, a point rather than a body, and it functions as amplification without judgement. It signifies obsession and ambition, foreign things and foreign lands, technology and unconventional routes, sudden rise, deception and addiction. It owns no sign; classical opinion gives it co-rulership tendencies in Kumbha and strength in Mithuna and Kanya, and there is genuine disagreement in the texts about its exaltation, most commonly given as Vrishabha or Mithuna. Rahu magnifies whatever house and planet it touches, including good ones. The honest summary is that Rahu gives, and gives more than expected, and rarely gives it in the form that was wanted.

Ketu, the South Node: Detachment, Mastery and Severance

Ketu is the descending node, exactly one hundred and eighty degrees from Rahu, and it operates by removal. It signifies detachment, moksha, past-life skill that arrives without training, occult and research capacity, sudden loss, and the fine sharp separations that leave no argument behind. Where Rahu enlarges, Ketu cuts. The classical description of Ketu as a headless body is precise about the effect: capability without appetite. A person with a strong Ketu in the tenth may be genuinely excellent at their work and completely unable to care about promotion. Ketu placements often explain a life pattern nothing else in the chart accounts for, particularly repeated withdrawal from things that were going well.

Why Rahu and Ketu Are Treated Differently in Our Engine

The nodes own no sign, so they cannot be house lords, which removes them from a large amount of Parashari logic that runs on lordship. They also occupy the shadow zone in classical aspect theory: texts variously give them the standard seventh aspect, or the fifth and ninth, or no aspect at all. Trikaal Vaani takes the position that Rahu and Ketu cast no Drishti for the purpose of Drik Bala, counting only the seven classical Grahas. That is a stated position, not an omission, and it was taken because including the nodes produced negative Drik Bala for six of seven planets in test charts. When the nodes matter most is the Rahu-Ketu axis itself, which is where Kaal Sarp Dosh is read.

The Karaka Table: Which Graha Signifies What

Each Graha is the natural significator for specific matters regardless of your Lagna, and this is the third layer of evidence in any reading. Sun for father, soul, authority and government. Moon for mother, mind and the public. Mars for siblings, property, courage and surgery. Mercury for speech, intellect, trade and education. Jupiter for wealth, children, guru and dharma. Venus for spouse, comfort, vehicles and art. Saturn for longevity, labour, sorrow and time. Rahu for foreign matters and unconventional gain. Ketu for detachment and occult skill. Use the karaka to confirm a house verdict, never to override it. A house, its lord and its karaka all agreeing is the strongest evidence a chart offers.

Exaltation and Debilitation: The Fourteen Facts to Memorise

Every Graha has one exaltation sign with an exact peak degree and the opposite sign as its fall. Sun exalts in Mesha at ten degrees and falls in Tula. Moon exalts in Vrishabha at three, falls in Vrishchika. Mars exalts in Makara at twenty eight, falls in Karka. Mercury exalts in Kanya at fifteen, falls in Meena. Jupiter exalts in Karka at five, falls in Makara. Venus exalts in Meena at twenty seven, falls in Kanya. Saturn exalts in Tula at twenty, falls in Mesha. The degree matters: a planet at its exact exaltation degree is at maximum, and a planet in its exaltation sign but far from that degree is strong but not maximal. Most reports report the sign and ignore the degree.

Moolatrikona: The Placement That Beats Own Sign

Between exaltation and own sign sits a range most reports never mention. Moolatrikona is a specific degree band in one of a planet own signs where it performs at close to exaltation strength. Sun in Simha from zero to twenty degrees. Moon in Vrishabha from four to thirty. Mars in Mesha from zero to twelve. Mercury in Kanya from sixteen to twenty. Jupiter in Dhanu from zero to ten. Venus in Tula from zero to fifteen. Saturn in Kumbha from zero to twenty. This band contributes directly to Sthana Bala in Shadbala, and it is one reason two charts with the same planet in the same sign can compute to very different strengths. Degree precision is not a luxury here, it is the calculation.

Planetary Friendship: Natural, Temporal and Combined

A planet sitting in a friend sign is supported and in an enemy sign is constrained, but friendship itself has three layers. Natural friendship is fixed by classical tables: the Sun is friendly to Moon, Mars and Jupiter, neutral to Mercury, and hostile to Venus and Saturn. Temporal friendship depends on the chart at hand, where planets in the second, third, fourth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth from each other are temporary friends. Combined friendship merges the two into a five-step scale from great friend to great enemy, and that combined value is what feeds Sthana Bala. This is why a planet can be in a natural enemy sign and still compute as reasonably placed in a specific chart.

Combustion, Asta: When the Sun Burns a Planet Out

A planet too close to the Sun in longitude becomes combust and loses much of its capacity to deliver. The classical orbs differ by planet, roughly seventeen degrees for the Moon, twelve for Venus and Mercury when direct and less when retrograde, and around fifteen for Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Combustion is one of the most under-reported conditions in free reports and it explains a very common complaint: a planet that is exalted or well placed on paper and delivers almost nothing. Mercury is combust most often because it never travels far from the Sun. When a chart promises something and life has not delivered it, combustion is the second thing to check after strength.

Retrogression, Vakri: Slower, Not Reversed

Retrograde motion is an appearance created by the relative speed of Earth and the planet; nothing actually moves backwards. In Jyotish a retrograde planet is generally treated as unusually strong in its own way but inward-turned, delivering results that arrive late, repeat, or come from a direction the native did not expect. Interpretations differ sharply between schools, and honesty requires saying so: some texts treat retrogression as increased strength, others as disturbance. What is not in dispute is that retrogression changes the combustion orb and affects Cheshta Bala, both of which our engine computes numerically rather than describing in adjectives.

Graha Yuddha: When Two Planets Fight

When two Grahas other than the Sun and Moon come within one degree of each other in longitude, classical texts describe a planetary war, and the loser suffers a significant loss of strength. Most texts award victory to the planet further north in declination, though some use brightness or the lower longitude. This is a narrow condition and it does not appear in most charts, but where it does appear it is decisive and it is almost never reported by automated software. If a chart contains two planets within a degree of each other, that fact alone can explain why one of them has never performed despite good placement.

Digbala: Where Each Graha Is Strongest by Direction

Directional strength is one of the six components of Shadbala and it is simple enough to check by eye. Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the first house, east. Sun and Mars in the tenth, south. Saturn in the seventh, west. Moon and Venus in the fourth, north. Each is weakest in the opposite house. The classical calculation is not a house count but an angular measure: take the planet longitude, subtract the cusp of its point of weakness, fold anything above one hundred and eighty from three hundred and sixty, and divide by three. That yields the exact Dig Bala in virupas, which is what our engine uses rather than the coarse house-based approximation most tools apply.

Shadbala: Turning Strong and Weak Into an Actual Number

Shadbala is the six-fold strength calculation from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra chapter twenty seven. Sthana Bala from positional dignity across the divisional charts, Dig Bala from direction, Kala Bala from time of birth, Cheshta Bala from motion, Naisargika Bala from natural hierarchy, and Drik Bala from aspects received. Each component is measured in virupas, totalled, and compared against the classical minimum required for that planet, which differs by planet. The output is a ratio. A ratio above one means the planet can deliver its promise; well below one means it has the promise and not the fuel. Drishti: Which Graha Sees Which House, and How Hard

Every Graha aspects the seventh house from itself. Mars additionally aspects the fourth and eighth, Jupiter the fifth and ninth, Saturn the third and tenth. That is the common knowledge layer. The layer almost nobody uses is that Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra assigns each aspect a strength in virupas based on the exact angular separation between the two planets. An aspect at thirty degrees separation is worth essentially nothing. The same aspect at forty five degrees carries a real fraction. So the correct sentence is never that Saturn aspects your tenth house, it is that Saturn aspects your tenth house at a specific measurable strength. Other platforms give the score. Conjunctions: Two Grahas Sharing One House

When two Grahas occupy the same house they blend, and the blend is not an average. The stronger planet by Shadbala dominates and the weaker takes its colour. Sun and Mercury give Budhaditya, sharp intellect, subject to combustion. Moon and Jupiter in a Kendra relationship give Gajakesari. Sun and Saturn together are the classical father-and-time tension and frequently show as authority conflict. Mars and Saturn together produce sustained pressure that is either enormous productivity or chronic frustration depending on dignity. Venus and Ketu together often show as detachment inside relationship. Read the pair, then check which of the two actually has the strength to lead.

Karaka Bhava Nashaya: When a Graha Damages Its Own House

There is a classical rule that a natural significator sitting in the house it signifies damages that house. The Sun in the ninth can strain the father relationship. Venus in the seventh can complicate marriage. Jupiter in the fifth can delay children. Saturn in the eighth is the noted exception because Saturn is the karaka of longevity and the eighth is its own natural territory. This rule is real but it is frequently overapplied by beginners who use it to predict disaster from a perfectly ordinary placement. Treat it as a caution flag that lowers the verdict by one grade, not as a verdict in itself, and always check dignity and strength before applying it.

Which Graha Actually Runs Your Life

Three candidates, and they are often different planets. The Lagna lord runs the body and the general direction of the life. The Atmakaraka in the Jaimini system is the planet at the highest degree in any sign regardless of which sign, and it represents the soul agenda and the lesson the life is built around. The Dasha lord is whichever planet is currently running its Mahadasha and therefore holds the steering wheel right now. A person whose Lagna lord is Jupiter, whose Atmakaraka is Saturn and who is running Rahu Mahadasha is being pulled in three directions, and naming those three is often the single most clarifying thing a reading can do.

Vimshottari Dasha: Every Graha Gets Its Turn

The nine Grahas divide a hundred and twenty years between them, keyed to the Moon nakshatra at birth. Ketu seven years, Venus twenty, Sun six, Moon ten, Mars seven, Rahu eighteen, Jupiter sixteen, Saturn nineteen, Mercury seventeen. During a planet Mahadasha, the houses it owns, occupies and aspects become the active theme of the life. A strong planet delivers its full promise in its period; a weak one delivers a thin version. Remedies by Graha: What Actually Follows From the Chart

Remedies in classical practice follow the diagnosis, they do not precede it. The first question is whether the planet is weak or afflicted, because these need opposite treatments: a weak benefic is strengthened, an afflicted malefic is pacified, and strengthening a functional malefic makes things worse.
