What a Dosha Actually Is

A dosha is a specific planetary configuration that classical texts associate with difficulty in a particular department of life. That is the whole definition, and two things follow from it immediately. First, a dosha is a defined geometric condition, not a mood or an atmosphere: either the planets satisfy the definition or they do not. Second, almost every dosha named in the classical literature comes with documented conditions under which it does not apply, called Bhanga or cancellation, and the cancellation is written into the same text as the affliction. Any treatment of doshas that gives you the first half and withholds the second is not incomplete by accident.

Why Doshas Are the Most Commercially Abused Part of Jyotish

Fear converts better than information, and doshas are the fear inventory of the astrology business. The pattern is consistent enough to recognise on sight: name the dosha, describe consequences in the widest possible terms so the listener recognises something, imply urgency, and offer a paid remedy. Nothing in that sequence requires the chart to be read carefully, and none of it involves the cancellation clause. This page is written the other way round. Every dosha below is given with its actual definition, its actual cancellation, and an honest note on whether it is a classical rule or a modern convention.

The Cancellation Rule Almost Nobody Mentions

If you take one thing from this page, take this. Bhanga means breaking, and a dosha bhanga is a condition under which the affliction is nullified. The classical texts list these at length, and in practice a large fraction of charts that technically satisfy a dosha definition also satisfy at least one cancellation. This is why two competent astrologers can look at the same chart and one says Manglik and the other says the Manglik is cancelled, and both are working from the same text. The dishonest version of this is reporting only the affliction. The test is simple: ask whether the cancellation was checked.

The Doshas Actually Worth Checking

There are dozens of named doshas in circulation and only a handful carry real diagnostic weight. The ones covered on this page in order of how often they matter: Mangal Dosh for marriage, Kaal Sarp Dosh for the nodal axis, Pitra Dosh for the ancestral and paternal layer, Shani Sade Sati which is not a dosha at all, Kemadruma for the isolated Moon, Grahan Dosh for luminary-node conjunction, Guru Chandal for Jupiter with Rahu, and the technical ones almost nobody sells, Kendradhipati Dosha and Karaka Bhava Nashaya. Then the matching doshas, which belong to compatibility rather than to a single chart.

Mangal Dosh: The Actual Definition

Mangal Dosh, also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha, exists when Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. The twelfth and second are counted in some traditions and not others, and North and South Indian practice differ on this, which is one honest reason two astrologers disagree. The classical concern is the marriage house and Mars energy discharging into the domestic sphere. It is a real configuration. It is also present in a very large share of all charts, which alone should tell you it cannot be the catastrophe it is sold as. The definitional detail is on what Mangal Dosh actually is.

Mangal Dosh: Three Reference Points, Not One

This is where most free tools get it wrong. The dosha is assessed not only from the Lagna but also from the Moon and from Venus. A chart can be Manglik from the Lagna and clean from the Moon, or the reverse. Traditions weigh these differently, with some treating Lagna-based Mangal as primary and Chandra-based as secondary. What is not disputed is that checking only one reference point produces an incomplete verdict, and a report that announces Manglik without saying from which reference has not finished the calculation.

Mangal Dosh: The Cancellations

The documented Bhanga conditions are numerous and this is the part sold reports omit. Mars in its own sign or exaltation. Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter. Both partners Manglik, which is the most widely known cancellation. Mars in the seventh in Mesha, Vrishchika, Karka, Makara, Simha or Kumbha in various listings. Kaal Sarp Dosh: The Full-Arc Rule

Kaal Sarp Dosh exists when all seven classical planets, Sun through Saturn, fall within the one hundred and eighty degree arc between Rahu and Ketu. All seven. Not five, not six. The nodes are always exactly opposite each other, so they divide the zodiac into two halves, and the condition requires every other planet to sit inside one of those halves. This is a purely geometric test with a yes or no answer, which makes it one of the few doshas that can be verified without any interpretation at all. The full treatment is on Kaal Sarp Dosh.

Why Partial Kaal Sarp Does Not Exist

A large amount of published content describes partial Kaal Sarp Dosh, where six of seven planets fall inside the arc. There is no classical basis for this and the phrase appears to be a commercial invention, because it converts charts that fail the test into charts that can still be sold a remedy. The Twelve Types and the Three That Invert

When the condition is satisfied, the type is named by which house axis the nodes occupy, giving twelve named types from Anant to Sheshnag. Most treatments list all twelve as equally afflicting. Three of them do something different and it is worth knowing: when the nodes sit on the sixth, eighth or twelfth axis, Viparita Raja Yoga logic can apply, giving Mahapadma, Karkotak and Sheshnag an inverting character where difficulty converts into an unusual kind of success. Kaal Sarp Cancellation and What Breaks the Arc

The arc is broken if any single planet sits outside it, which is the primary and most obvious cancellation. Beyond that, classical opinion holds that a strong Lagna lord, benefic planets in Kendras, or a strong Jupiter substantially reduce the effect even where the arc holds. The condition is also not lifelong in its intensity, since it operates most strongly during Rahu and Ketu periods. Pitra Dosh: How It Is Actually Read

Pitra Dosh concerns the ancestral and paternal layer and is read primarily from the Sun, the ninth house and its lord, and involvement of Rahu, Ketu or Saturn with those. The commonest configurations are the Sun conjunct Rahu or Ketu, malefics in the ninth, or the ninth lord afflicted and placed in a Dusthana. It is associated in the texts with unfinished ancestral obligation rather than with punishment, which is a materially different framing from how it is usually sold. Pitra Dosh Versus Kaal Sarp: Differential Diagnosis

These two get confused constantly because both involve the nodes and both produce blockage. The textures differ. Kaal Sarp typically shows as work reaching ninety percent and stalling at the final step, with the obstruction feeling external and impersonal. Pitra Dosh typically shows as a recurring family-pattern obstruction, difficulty with the father or with paternal-line matters, and a sense of repeating something that started before you. Shani Sade Sati Is Not a Dosha

This needs stating plainly because it is sold as one. Sade Sati is a transit, not a birth-chart affliction. It occurs when transiting Saturn passes through the twelfth, first and second signs from your natal Moon, taking roughly seven and a half years. Every single person alive experiences it two or three times in a lifetime. It is not a defect in your chart, it cannot be present or absent as a permanent feature, and it ends on a date that can be computed exactly. The Three Phases of Sade Sati and Why They Differ

The first phase, Saturn in the twelfth from the Moon, tends to affect expenditure, sleep and mental load. The second, Saturn over the natal Moon, is usually the most demanding and touches the mind and the body directly. The third, Saturn in the second from the Moon, tends to concern money, family and speech. The three are experienced very differently by the same person, which is why a blanket statement about Sade Sati being bad is useless. Shani Dhaiya, the Small Panoti

Dhaiya is the two and a half year transit of Saturn through the fourth or eighth sign from your natal Moon, and it is often confused with Sade Sati because both are Saturn transits measured from the Moon. The eighth-house transit, Ashtama Shani, is the one most commonly asked about and it typically concerns sudden changes and health attention rather than the slow grind of Sade Sati. Like Sade Sati it is a transit with computable start and end dates, not a permanent chart feature, and the same rule applies: the condition of natal Saturn decides how it lands.

Kemadruma Dosha: The Isolated Moon

Kemadruma forms when no planet occupies the houses immediately on either side of the Moon, the second and twelfth from it, excluding the Sun and the nodes in most readings. Its classical association is with emotional isolation and a lack of support structures rather than with material loss. The cancellations are extensive and this is important: a planet in a Kendra from the Moon, the Moon in a Kendra from the Lagna, benefic aspect on the Moon, or the Moon being strong by Paksha Bala all reduce or nullify it. Kemadruma with a strong Moon is not the same condition as Kemadruma with a dark waning Moon.

Grahan Dosha: Sun or Moon With the Nodes

Grahan Dosha, the eclipse affliction, is formed by the Sun or the Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu, replicating the geometry of an eclipse. With the Sun it touches the father, authority and vitality significations and overlaps substantially with Pitra Dosh. With the Moon it touches the mind, the mother and emotional stability. The degree of closeness matters greatly and is usually ignored: a conjunction within three degrees behaves very differently from one at fifteen degrees in the same sign, and any report that treats the two identically has not computed anything.

Guru Chandal Yoga: Jupiter With Rahu

When Jupiter is conjunct Rahu, the classical texts describe Guru Chandal, where the significations of wisdom, ethics and the teacher become mixed with Rahu unconventional and boundary-crossing nature. The honest reading is not that the person becomes unethical. It is that judgement operates outside conventional frames, which produces both genuine originality and genuine misjudgement depending on the strength and dignity of Jupiter. When Jupiter is strong the same configuration frequently appears in people who broke a field open. This is a case where the classical name is far more alarming than the classical description.

Kendradhipati Dosha: The Technical One Nobody Sells

There is no fear value in this one, which is exactly why it is worth knowing. When a natural benefic owns a Kendra, it loses some of its capacity to give good results, and when a natural malefic owns a Kendra, it loses some of its capacity to harm. That is Kendradhipati Dosha. It explains why a Jupiter sitting proudly in a Kendra sometimes underdelivers while a Saturn in the same position quietly builds a career. Karaka Bhava Nashaya: When a Planet Damages Its Own House

A natural significator sitting in the house it signifies is classically said to strain that house. Sun in the ninth can strain the father relationship, Venus in the seventh can complicate marriage, Jupiter in the fifth can delay children. Saturn in the eighth is the noted exception. This rule is real and it is badly overapplied, with beginners using it to predict disaster from ordinary placements. Treat it as a caution that lowers the verdict by one grade rather than as a verdict, and check dignity and strength before applying it at all.

The Matching Doshas: Nadi, Bhakoot and Gana

These belong to compatibility rather than to a single chart and they arise from Ashtakoot Guna Milan. Nadi Dosha carries eight of the thirty six points and is the one most often used to reject a match outright. Bhakoot carries seven, Gana six. All three have documented cancellations: same Nadi with different nakshatras or different padas, Bhakoot cancelled when the rashi lords are friends or identical, Gana cancelled by rashi and nakshatra lord relationships. Which Doshas Are Classical and Which Are Modern Conventions

Worth being precise. Mangal Dosh, Kemadruma, Kendradhipati, Karaka Bhava Nashaya and the Ashtakoot matching doshas have clear textual grounding. Grahan and Guru Chandal are well established in later classical literature. Kaal Sarp Dosh, notably, does not appear as a named yoga in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra at all and is a later tradition, which we state openly on our own Kaal Sarp pages rather than implying ancient authority it does not have. Partial Kaal Sarp has no basis anywhere. Naming the provenance is part of an honest reading, and a source that never does this is not distinguishing between them.

How to Tell Whether a Dosha Is Actually Affecting You

Three questions in order. Does the chart satisfy the definition precisely, including the reference point and the exact degrees. Does any documented cancellation apply. And is the dosha currently active, meaning is a period of the planets involved running now. A dosha that satisfies the definition, has no cancellation, and involves planets whose Dasha is not running is a dormant condition, not a live one. This third question is the one almost never asked, and it explains why people who were told a dosha would ruin their life spent decades without noticing it.

The Differential Table: Which Dosha Produces Which Texture

Symptom pictures overlap, so the differences are in the texture. Kaal Sarp reads as effort reaching the final step and stalling, obstruction that feels external. Pitra Dosh reads as a repeating family pattern and paternal-line difficulty. Sade Sati reads as slow accumulating pressure with delay rather than denial, and it has an end date. Mangal Dosh concentrates in the domestic and marital sphere specifically. Kemadruma reads as isolation and absent support rather than blocked outcome. Grahan with the Moon reads as emotional instability. Matching texture to the correct configuration is what makes a remedy relevant rather than generic.

Strength Changes Everything a Dosha Does

A dosha describes a configuration. What that configuration does depends on the strength of the planets involved, which is a separate measurement entirely. Mangal Dosh formed by a Mars at a Shadbala ratio of nought point six behaves very differently from the same dosha formed by a Mars at one point five, and the second is arguably not a problem at all but a concentration of force. This is the layer that is missing from every template dosha report, and it is measurable rather than interpretive. Remedies That Follow From the Diagnosis

The order matters and it is almost always reversed in practice. Establish the configuration, check the cancellation, measure the strength, identify whether the planet is weak or afflicted, and only then consider a remedy. Weak planets are strengthened and afflicted planets are pacified, and these are opposite treatments. Mantra, charity and behavioural adjustment are the safe layers. Gemstones are not, because they amplify unconditionally and amplifying an afflicted functional malefic makes matters worse. No remedy overrides the Dasha, and no remedy needs to cost a large sum.

It runs like this. A dosha is named without the reference point or the degrees. Consequences are described broadly enough that anyone recognises something. Urgency is introduced, often tied to a date. A specific ritual is offered at a specific price, frequently at a named location you cannot verify. Cancellation is never mentioned. Strength is never mentioned. The Dasha is never mentioned. If you encounter three of those five, you are being sold to. The correct response is to ask which cancellation conditions were checked, and the answer to that single question ends most of these conversations.

What We Will Not Say About Doshas

We do not tell anyone a dosha has ruined or will ruin their life. We do not make longevity, mortality or serious-illness claims from any configuration, including the eighth house ones where that language is most common. We do not tell people a marriage must be rejected on the basis of a dosha, and we treat Manglik rejection as a matching question with cancellations rather than a verdict.
