The most common complaint in Indian astrology is a single sentence, repeated by thousands of people: my chart has a Raja Yoga and nothing has happened. It is a fair complaint and it has a precise answer. A yoga is a structure. Structure describes what is possible. It says nothing about whether the planets forming it have the capacity to actually deliver. Capacity is a separate measurement, and the classical system has one: Shadbala. When two planets form a genuine Raja Yoga and both are running at seventy percent of the strength their own tradition requires of them, the yoga is real and its output is thin. Nobody was lying to you. Somebody simply skipped the measurement. This page is that measurement, taken apart piece by piece.
What Shadbala Actually Is
Shadbala means six strengths, and it is set out in chapter twenty seven of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. The six are Sthana Bala from positional dignity, Dig Bala from direction, Kala Bala from the time of birth, Cheshta Bala from apparent motion, Naisargika Bala from the fixed natural hierarchy of the planets, and Drik Bala from the aspects a planet receives. Each is computed independently, each has sub-components, and the six are added. The result is then compared against a classical minimum requirement, and the comparison rather than the total is what carries meaning. It is the only part of Jyotish that produces a number you can argue with, which is exactly why most astrology content avoids it.
Virupas and Rupas: The Units of Planetary Strength
Strength is counted in virupas. Sixty virupas make one rupa, in the same way sixty minutes make one hour. Most individual components are capped at sixty virupas, meaning one rupa, and a full Shadbala total for a well placed planet typically lands somewhere between five and eleven rupas. These units are not decorative. Because everything is expressed in the same unit, six completely different kinds of strength, from where a planet sits to what time you were born to what is looking at it, can be added into one figure. That is the design achievement of the system and it is why the output can be compared across planets and across charts.
Why Strength Is a Ratio, Not a Score Out of a Hundred
A raw total tells you almost nothing on its own, because the planets are not held to the same standard. The text gives each planet its own minimum requirement, and a planet is judged against its own bar. So the meaningful number is the total divided by that minimum, which produces a ratio. A ratio of one point three means the planet is running at thirty percent above what the tradition requires of it. A ratio of nought point seven means it is thirty percent short. This is why any tool that shows planetary strength as a percentage out of a hundred has flattened the most important part of the calculation and made two planets look comparable when they are not.
The Minimum Bar: Every Planet Has a Different One
The classical minimums, given in rupas, are Sun six point five, Moon six, Mars five, Mercury seven, Jupiter six point five, Venus five point five and Saturn five. Notice the shape of this. Mercury is held to the highest standard of all seven, and Mars and Saturn to the lowest. That is not arbitrary. A malefic delivering through friction does not need the same abundance of strength to produce its effect as Mercury does to produce clear, usable intelligence. Any implementation that divides every planet by the same number is not computing Shadbala, and the result will systematically understate Mars and Saturn while overstating Mercury.
Component One, Sthana Bala: Strength From Position
Sthana Bala is positional strength and it is the largest of the six, worth up to around four hundred and eighty virupas. It has five sub-components: Uchcha Bala from distance to the exaltation point, Saptavargaja Bala from dignity across seven divisional charts, Ojhayugma Bala from odd and even signs, Kendradi Bala from angular position, and Drekkana Bala from the decanate. Because Sthana Bala dominates the total, an implementation that omits any of its parts will produce numbers that look plausible and are wrong by a wide margin. The most commonly omitted piece is Saptavargaja, and it alone carries up to two hundred and twenty five virupas.
Uchcha Bala: Measured From the Debilitation Point
Every planet has an exact exaltation degree and, one hundred and eighty degrees away, an exact debilitation degree. Uchcha Bala is computed as the angular distance from the debilitation point, folded if it exceeds one hundred and eighty, and divided by three, giving a maximum of sixty virupas at exact exaltation and zero at exact debilitation. This is why degree precision matters and why reporting only the sign is insufficient. A planet in its exaltation sign but sitting near the far edge of it can score substantially less than a planet in a neutral sign that happens to sit close to its exaltation degree.
Saptavargaja Bala: Dignity Across Seven Charts
This is the sub-component most free tools skip entirely, and it is worth up to two hundred and twenty five virupas, roughly fifty eight percent of Sthana Bala. It examines the planet dignity not only in the Rashi chart but across seven divisional charts: Rashi, Hora, Drekkana, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dwadasamsa and Trimsamsa. In each one the planet earns points according to whether it sits in its Moolatrikona, own sign, great friend, friend, neutral, enemy or great enemy sign. A planet can look ordinary in the D1 and accumulate real strength across the vargas, or the reverse. Omitting this is the single largest cause of understated Shadbala figures in circulation.
Ojhayugma, Kendradi and Drekkana Bala
Three smaller positional pieces. Ojhayugma awards fifteen virupas for an odd sign and fifteen for an odd Navamsa to Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn, and the even-sign equivalent to Venus and the Moon. Kendradi gives sixty virupas in a Kendra, thirty in a Panapara and fifteen in an Apoklima, so angular placement is rewarded structurally. Drekkana gives fifteen virupas by decanate: male planets Sun, Mars and Jupiter in the first decanate, female planets Venus and Moon in the second, and Saturn and Mercury in the third. That last assignment is worth stating precisely because implementations frequently get it wrong, and two planets end up scored in the wrong decanate.
Component Two, Dig Bala: Strength From Direction
Each planet has a direction where it performs best and the opposite direction where it is weakest. Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the first house, the east. Sun and Mars in the tenth, the south. Saturn in the seventh, the west. Moon and Venus in the fourth, the north. Dig Bala is worth up to sixty virupas. What is important here is not the rule, which is widely known, but the method: it is an angular measurement, not a house count. Take the planet longitude, subtract the cusp of its point of weakness, fold anything above one hundred and eighty from three hundred and sixty, and divide by three.
Why Dig Bala by House Count Is Wrong
A common shortcut in software is to count how many houses a planet sits from its strong house and subtract a fixed amount per house. This produces a step function where the classical rule gives a smooth curve, and it can be off by twenty virupas or more for a planet sitting near a house boundary. A Sun at the very start of the tenth house and a Sun at the very end of it are treated identically by the shortcut and very differently by the text. Our engine computes the angular form, which is a small detail that shows up as a visible difference in the final ratio, particularly for planets close to a cusp.
Component Three, Kala Bala: Strength From the Moment of Birth
Kala Bala is the largest and most intricate of the temporal components, worth up to around three hundred and ninety virupas across its parts. It includes Natonnata Bala from whether the birth was by day or by night, Paksha Bala from the Moon phase, Tribhaga Bala from which third of the day or night the birth fell in, and the Varsha, Masa, Dina and Hora Balas which depend on the lords of the year, month, day and hour of birth. Ayana Bala, from declination, is also counted here. Because so much of this depends on the exact hour, Kala Bala is the component most sensitive to birth time accuracy.
Natonnata Bala: Day Births and Night Births
Nata is measured as the angular distance from apparent midnight. Moon, Mars and Saturn take the Nata value, favouring night births. Sun, Jupiter and Venus take sixty minus Nata, favouring day births. Mercury always receives the full sixty regardless. A note on implementation that matters more than it should: a Julian Day begins at noon, not midnight, so a naive calculation of hour from the Julian Day fraction inverts day and night in every single chart. That exact bug existed in our own engine and was found and fixed by computing true sunrise from the hour angle formula instead. It is the kind of error that produces confidently wrong numbers everywhere.
Paksha Bala: The Moon Phase Component
Paksha Bala is derived from the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun, folded if above one hundred and eighty and divided by three. Benefics take that value directly; malefics take sixty minus it. The Moon own Paksha Bala is then doubled. The practical consequence is that a Moon born near the new Moon is weak regardless of what sign it occupies, and a Moon near the full Moon is strong regardless of sign. This is a place where we knowingly differ from some other platforms: on a Shukla Pratipada chart, where the Moon has just begun waxing, we compute a very low Paksha Bala because that is what the geometry gives, while some tools report a high figure.
Tribhaga, Varsha, Masa, Dina and Hora Bala
Tribhaga divides the day into three parts and the night into three, awarding sixty virupas to Mercury, the Sun and Saturn in the successive day thirds and to the Moon, Venus and Mars in the night thirds, with Jupiter always receiving sixty. The four lordship balas award fifteen virupas to the lord of the year, thirty to the lord of the month, forty five to the lord of the weekday and sixty to the lord of the hora. Computing the year and month lords correctly requires an Ahargana count from a specific epoch, which is easy to get wrong and which we back-solved and verified against the worked example printed in the text itself.
Ayana Bala: Declination and the Solstice Axis
Ayana Bala is computed from a planet declination, its angular distance north or south of the celestial equator. The formula takes twenty three degrees twenty seven minutes plus or minus the declination, with the sign depending on the planet and whether the declination is north or south, and multiplies by a fixed constant. The Sun value is doubled. This component is genuinely awkward to implement because the tables printed in most editions are badly reproduced, and it is quietly dropped by a number of implementations. Dropping it does not merely lose those virupas, it shifts every ratio in the chart downward in a way that looks like a systematic weakness rather than a missing component.
Component Four, Cheshta Bala: Strength From Motion
Cheshta Bala measures a planet apparent motion relative to its mean motion, capped at sixty virupas. For Mars through Saturn it is derived from the Cheshta Kendra, the angular difference between the planet mean position and a reference point in its retrograde cycle. The Sun and Moon are special cases: the classical rule assigns the Sun Ayana Bala as its Cheshta and the Moon Paksha Bala as hers. We take the position that counting those a second time would be double-counting, since Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra own stated maximum of one thousand and twenty virupas only reconciles if Cheshta is capped at sixty, so we score the two luminaries at zero for this component and say so openly.
Component Five, Naisargika Bala: The Fixed Hierarchy
This is the simplest of the six and the only one identical in every chart ever cast. The planets are ranked by natural brightness and each receives sixty divided by seven, multiplied by its rank. Saturn is weakest, then Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Moon and the Sun strongest at the full sixty. Because it never varies it contributes nothing to distinguishing one chart from another, which leads some people to dismiss it. That is a mistake: it is a constant floor that lifts the luminaries relative to Saturn in every total, and removing it would distort the comparison between planets that the ratio system depends on.
Component Six, Drik Bala: Strength From Aspects Received
Drik Bala is the only component that can be negative. It is the sum of aspects a planet receives, weighted by the exact angular separation from each aspecting planet, with benefic aspects adding and malefic aspects subtracting, the total divided by four. Because it uses sputa drishti rather than a yes or no test, an aspect at thirty degrees separation contributes essentially nothing while the same aspect at its classical angular point contributes fully. We take the position that Rahu and Ketu cast no drishti for this purpose, counting only the seven classical Grahas. That is a stated decision by our astrologer, not an omission, taken because including the nodes drove six of seven planets negative in test charts.
Reading Your Own Shadbala Table
When you see your six figures, read them in this order. First the total ratio, which tells you whether the planet clears its bar. Second, which component is dragging it down, because that is diagnostic rather than descriptive: a planet weak in Kala Bala has a birth-time-driven weakness, while one weak in Sthana Bala has a placement problem, and these have different implications. Third, compare the ratio of the Lagna lord against the ratio of the planet running your current Mahadasha, because those two together describe most of what your life currently feels like. A table without this reading order is just seven numbers.
What the Ratio Bands Mean in Practice
Below nought point seven, a planet is genuinely under-resourced and whatever it owns tends to require disproportionate effort. Between nought point seven and one, it delivers late and partially, which is the band where most unexplained yoga failures sit. Between one and one point three, it delivers reliably. Above one point five, it is strong enough that its results tend to arrive without being forced. These bands are not in the classical text as bands; they are the practical reading of the ratio the text defines, and we state that distinction rather than dressing convention up as scripture.
Why an Exalted Planet Can Compute Weak
Exaltation contributes to exactly one sub-component of one of the six strengths. Uchcha Bala is worth sixty virupas out of a total that can exceed six hundred. So an exalted planet that is combust, in a cadent house, in a hostile Navamsa, born at the wrong time of day for its Natonnata preference, and receiving malefic aspects, will compute weak despite its label. This is not a paradox and it is not the system contradicting itself. It is the system being more detailed than the label. When a report tells you a planet is exalted and stops there, it has told you one sixtieth of the story.
Shadbala and Yogas: Structure Versus Fuel
Every yoga in Jyotish is a statement about structure. Raja Yoga is a Kendra lord and a Trikona lord in relationship. Gajakesari is Jupiter in a Kendra from the Moon. Panchamahapurusha requires a specific planet in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra. All of these describe an arrangement. None of them describes capacity. Reading the two together is the whole discipline: a Panchamahapurusha yoga formed by a planet at a ratio of nought point eight is technically present and practically muted, and a modest Dhana Yoga formed by two planets above one point four will outperform it. Where Shadbala Sits in the Rest of the Reading
Strength is never read alone, and it is worth seeing how it connects. It modifies every house verdict, because a house is delivered by its lord and a weak lord delivers a weak house, which is why the 12 Bhava guide puts lord condition ahead of occupancy. Shadbala and Dasha: Strength Decides What a Period Delivers
A Mahadasha hands the steering wheel to one planet for a fixed number of years. What that planet does with it depends on its strength. A Saturn at ratio one point five running its nineteen year Mahadasha builds something durable. The same nineteen years under a Saturn at nought point six feels like continuous pressure with thin output. Shadbala and Remedies: Weak Is Not the Same as Afflicted
This distinction decides whether a remedy helps or harms. A weak planet has low Shadbala and needs strengthening. An afflicted planet may have perfectly adequate Shadbala while receiving heavy malefic aspects, and needs pacifying rather than amplifying. The two require opposite treatments, and the error is common because both get described as bad in ordinary language. It matters most with gemstones, which amplify their planet unconditionally: strengthening a functional malefic that already has strength is how people make their situation worse for years. How We Verified Our Own Implementation
Rather than assert accuracy, here is what was actually done. Our Shadbala module was rebuilt against the full classical minimums after we found it was computing components on a truncated scale while dividing by the full requirement, which pushed a typical chart down to around nought point six one and made almost every planet look weak. After the rebuild, a reference chart moved to a median ratio of one point two nine with a range from nought point seven two to one point seven one. That chart was then cross-checked against an independent platform: six of seven totals came within five percent, the Sun within one point seven percent, their median one point two seven against our one point two nine.
Where We Deliberately Differ From Other Platforms
Two divergences, both recorded rather than hidden. First, Moon Paksha Bala on a Shukla Pratipada chart: the ephemeris shows Moon and Sun only about ten degrees apart, meaning a nearly dark Moon, so we compute a very low value where another platform reports a high one. The geometry supports our figure. Second, the Sun minimum requirement: we keep it at six point five rupas following the standard translation of the text, where some platforms use five, which is why their Sun ratio can read considerably higher than ours on a near-identical total. Neither difference is an error on either side. They are different readings of the same tradition, and we name ours.
What We Do Not Claim About Shadbala
Two honest limits. Cheshta Kendra properly requires a full Surya Siddhanta model of the seeghrocha, and we use a speed-based approximation instead. The maximum for that component is sixty virupas, so the resulting error is small, but it is an approximation and we say so rather than letting it pass silently. Second, Shadbala measures capacity, not outcome. A strong planet is a planet able to deliver what it owns. It is not a prediction that the delivery will be pleasant, and it is certainly not a statement about longevity or health. We do not use strength figures to make medical or mortality claims at any price.
