Pratyantar Dasha Calculator: How to Calculate It Free
Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer
A pratyantar dasha is the third level of the Vimshottari system: a sub-sub-period inside an antardasha, which sits inside a mahadasha. Its length is mahadasha years times antardasha years times pratyantar years, divided by 14,400. Work out your own periods free with the [Dasha Calculator](/calculators/free-dasha-calculator).
Deep Dive Analysis
Pratyantar Dasha Calculator at a Glance
A pratyantar dasha is the third layer of the Vimshottari timing system. The mahadasha is the big chapter, the antardasha is a section inside it, and the pratyantar is a short paragraph inside that section, usually lasting a few weeks to a few months. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the proportional rule that builds every layer: the dasha years are multiplied by each lord's own years and divided by the total of 120.[4] The same rule is repeated for the pratyantar.[5] This guide explains the formula, shows a worked example, and tells you how to check your own periods with the free Dasha Calculator. It also covers how to read the result without fear, and when a human reading is better than a tool.
What Is a Pratyantar Dasha?
Pratyantar means the inner-inner period. It is the dasha of one planet running inside the antardasha of another planet, which runs inside the mahadasha of a third. For example, in Saturn mahadasha, Mercury antardasha, Ketu pratyantar, three planets colour the same window of time. The mahadasha lord sets the theme, the antardasha lord sets the sub-theme and the pratyantar lord sets the immediate flavour. Classical texts name the finer subdivisions as antar, pratyantar, prana and sukshma.[6] Pratyantar is the first level fine enough to time a particular month. To see how it is used for timing manifestation, read our dasha and pratyantar timing guide and the mahadasha guide.
The Levels: Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantar, Sookshma and Prana
The Vimshottari system nests like a clock. The mahadasha runs from 6 to 20 years. Each mahadasha is divided into nine antardashas, each antardasha into nine pratyantars, each pratyantar into nine sookshma periods, and each sookshma into nine prana periods.[6] Every level uses the same nine planets in the same order, always starting with the lord of the level above. Most people use mahadasha and antardasha for life themes, pratyantar for months, and sookshma only for days. Because each step multiplies by about one ninth, accuracy needed in the birth time grows at every level, so confirm yours using our birth time accuracy guide.
Vimshottari Order and Years of the Nine Planets
The dasha lords run in a fixed order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, and the cycle repeats three times over the 27 nakshatras starting from Krittika.[1] The full cycle adds up to 120 years.[3] The years are Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20. Keep this list handy, because every formula in this guide uses it. For readings of each mahadasha, see the Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh and Ketu guides.
How Your Starting Dasha Comes From the Moon's Nakshatra
Your first mahadasha depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says to count from Krittika to the birth star, divide by nine, and let the remainder point to the lord in the Vimshottari order.[2] So Rohini, the second star from Krittika, starts a Moon dasha, and Uttara Bhadrapada, the 26th star, starts a Saturn dasha. The three stars of each lord are spaced nine apart. Find your birth star with the Nakshatra Calculator and read how it works in the nakshatra calculator guide. Examples of two stars are in Rohini Nakshatra and Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra.
The Balance of Dasha at Birth
At birth the first mahadasha is already partly spent. The balance equals the part of the nakshatra the Moon has not yet crossed, times the lord's full years. Each nakshatra is 13°20' wide. If the Moon is 6°40' into it, exactly half is gone, so half the lord's years remain. For a Saturn dasha that is 9.5 years of balance. BPHS describes this elapsed-and-remaining method in its dasha chapter.[2] A birth time wrong by a few minutes moves the Moon by a fraction of a degree, which can shift the balance by months. Good tools use the exact Moon degree, as the Dasha Calculator does. Cross-check by hand with our Vimshottari calculation guide.
Antardasha Formula and Its Logic
The rule in BPHS is proportional: multiply the mahadasha years by the antardasha lord's own years and divide by 120.[4] Order starts with the mahadasha lord itself, then the others in the usual sequence.[5] So in Saturn mahadasha, the first antardasha is Saturn's, then Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. For Saturn mahadasha and Mercury antardasha: 19 times 17 divided by 120 gives 2.69 years, about 2 years 8 months and 9 days. This works because the mahadasha is scaled in the same ratio as the 120-year cycle, so each planet gets its fair share. Read the full set of Saturn effects in the Shani mahadasha guide.
Pratyantar Formula and Its Logic
The pratyantar uses the same proportion once more.[5] Multiply the mahadasha years, the antardasha years and the pratyantar lord's years, then divide by 14,400, which is 120 times 120. The result is in years, and you convert it to days by multiplying by 365.25. The first pratyantar belongs to the antardasha lord, and the rest follow in the standard order. The nine pratyantars always add up to exactly the antardasha, which makes it easy to check the sum. A calculator does this instantly, but understanding the formula helps you spot errors, especially when two tools disagree. Test it yourself with the free Dasha Calculator.
Worked Example: Saturn Mahadasha, Mercury Antardasha
Take Saturn mahadasha (19 years) and Mercury antardasha (17 years). The antardasha lasts 19 times 17 divided by 120, about 2.69 years, or roughly 983 days. The pratyantars start with Mercury and then run Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter and Saturn. Their lengths in days are about: Mercury 139, Ketu 57, Venus 164, Sun 49, Moon 82, Mars 57, Rahu 148, Jupiter 131 and Saturn 156. These add up to 983, matching the antardasha. Notice that Sun, Ketu and Mars pratyantars are short, only a few weeks, while Venus and Saturn pratyantars are longer. Learn how the lord of each pratyantar colours the weeks in the Budh mahadasha guide and the Ketu guide.
Antardasha Lengths Inside a Saturn Mahadasha
For the same 19-year Saturn mahadasha, the nine antardashas are: Saturn about 3 years, Mercury about 2 years 8 months, Ketu about 1 year 1 month, Venus about 3 years 2 months, Sun about 11 months, Moon about 1 year 7 months, Mars about 1 year 1 month, Rahu about 2 years 10 months and Jupiter about 2 years 6 months. They add up to 19 years. This table shows why one antardasha can feel long and another can feel brief even in the same mahadasha. Each is then divided into pratyantars with the formula above. Use the Dasha Calculator to see yours and compare with the Jupiter mahadasha guide for a contrasting chapter.
Why Two Calculators Can Give Slightly Different Dates
Differences usually come from three things. First, the length of a year: some tools use a 365.25-day solar year, others a 360-day year, which shifts dates by several days over a mahadasha. Second, the ayanamsa: Lahiri is standard in India, but a different setting moves the Moon and the balance of dasha. Third, rounding at each level. None of these is a calculation error, but you should know which setting a tool uses. Trikaal Vaani uses Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa. If two tools disagree by weeks, trust the one that explains its settings. For why settings matter, see free kundli software vs real reading.
How to Calculate Pratyantar Dasha by Hand, Step by Step
Step one, find the Moon's nakshatra and exact degree in your sidereal chart. Step two, read the nakshatra lord, which is your first mahadasha lord.[2] Step three, compute the balance: remaining fraction of the nakshatra times the lord's years. Step four, list the next mahadashas in order with their full years until you reach today's date. Step five, for the running mahadasha, compute each antardasha as mahadasha years times antardasha years divided by 120.[4] Step six, for the running antardasha, compute pratyantars as mahadasha times antardasha times pratyantar divided by 14,400. Step seven, convert to dates. This is slow by hand, so use the Dasha Calculator and verify one period by hand.
How to Use the Free Dasha Calculator
Open the Dasha Calculator and enter your date of birth, exact time and place. Choose the correct time zone and daylight setting of the birth year. The tool shows your Moon nakshatra, the balance of the first dasha, the full list of mahadashas and, for each, the antardashas. Look for the one containing today's date, and then for the pratyantar. Save a screenshot, because periods run in sequence and you will want to see what is coming. If you do not know your birth time, first read the birth time accuracy guide. How to Read the Lord of a Pratyantar
Read the pratyantar in three steps. First, see which house the pratyantar lord sits in and which houses it owns. Second, check whether it is friendly to the antardasha lord. Third, check its dignity, whether it is in own sign, exalted, debilitated or combust. A pratyantar lord that owns a kendra or trikona and sits well gives supportive weeks. One that owns the sixth, eighth or twelfth and sits poorly gives more effort and delay. Always connect the three lords in the story: a Saturn mahadasha, Mercury antardasha and Venus pratyantar may become a work-and-money phase that touches relationships. See house meanings in the twelve houses guide and planet roles in the planets guide.
Pratyantar and Career Timing
Pratyantar is useful for choosing the month to apply, negotiate or start. Look for pratyantars of the tenth lord, the lord of the lagna, the ninth lord or a strong Sun, Mercury or Jupiter in a supportive antardasha. Avoid committing to major resignations in a pratyantar of a weak sixth or eighth lord without a plan. Remedy for a stressful career pratyantar: on the day of the pratyantar lord, spend ten minutes on a work-planning list and finish the one task you postponed, for 11 weeks, at no cost. Read our career window dasha guide, the government job dasha page and the career prediction page.
Pratyantar and Marriage Timing
Marriage timing usually needs the seventh lord, Venus, Jupiter for women and the mahadasha-antardasha story together. The pratyantar then picks the likely month, such as a Venus or seventh-lord pratyantar inside a supportive antardasha. A pratyantar alone never fixes the wedding date. Compare with the transits too. Read the Shukra antardasha marriage guide, the what age will I get married page and match the horoscopes with the Kundali Milan tool. If marriage talks feel stuck during a heavy pratyantar, keep communication regular, free of cost, and review the plan weekly for 11 weeks.
Pratyantar and Money
Money events such as a raise, a deal, a loan closure or a property purchase often show in pratyantars of the second, eleventh, fifth or ninth lords, supported by Jupiter or Venus. In a pratyantar of a weak planet, avoid impulsive investing. Upay: keep ten to twenty rupees aside every Thursday for a needy person and write down one financial decision you will delay for a week, for 11 weeks. It is cheap and builds discipline. For specific window guides, read the property buying window guide, the debt-free window guide and the wealth prediction page.
Pratyantar and Health Windows
Health sensitivity increases when the pratyantar lord rules or sits in the sixth, eighth or twelfth house or is afflicted. It is only an alert for routine care, not a diagnosis. In such weeks, protect sleep, hydration and regular check-ups. Upay: ten minutes of slow breathing every morning for the length of that pratyantar, free of cost. It calms the nervous system and fits almost any planet. For the Moon-based mind side, read the Chandra mahadasha guide, and for the body side the health prediction page. Always see a doctor for symptoms.
Pratyantar Versus Transit (Gochar)
Dasha tells you which planets are active and gochar tells you what the planets are doing in the sky now. The best timing reading uses both. A supportive pratyantar with a hostile transit may mean slow progress, and a mild pratyantar with a favourable Jupiter transit may bring a pleasant surprise. For current transits, read the Jupiter transit page and the Rahu-Ketu transit page, and look at your Moon sign using the Moon sign guide. Do not use one tool alone to judge the weeks ahead.
Why Rahu and Ketu Pratyantars Feel Confusing
Rahu and Ketu give results by the sign and house they sit in and by the planets they join, so their pratyantars can feel unclear: sudden thoughts, restlessness, detachment or sudden opportunities. This is a tendency, not a certainty. Upay for a confusing Rahu or Ketu pratyantar: on Saturday evening, write down one decision to postpone and one to act on, and keep the rest of the day simple, for 11 Saturdays, at no cost. It gives a clear next step. Read the Rahu antardasha confusion guide, the Ketu mahadasha guide and the Rahu mahadasha guide.
Sookshma and Prana: How Fine Can Timing Go
After pratyantar come sookshma periods, lasting days, and prana periods, lasting hours. They are mathematically correct and can be useful for muhurat-type decisions, but they depend heavily on exact birth time, so a few minutes of error moves them completely. Use them only with a verified birth time and treat them as a small signal, not a main one. A pratyantar is the finest level that most chart readers rely on. If your birth time is uncertain, stay at the antardasha level. See our birth time accuracy guide and the Shubh Muhurat Calculator for daily timing.
Common Mistakes When Reading Pratyantar Dasha
The first mistake is reading the pratyantar alone without the mahadasha and antardasha. The second is using a tropical chart or a wrong ayanamsa. The third is a guessed birth time. The fourth is predicting events from a single short pratyantar. The fifth is treating a difficult lord as a punishment, rather than as a call for a plan. The sixth is using expensive remedies without a human reading. Fix these by checking the settings, verifying the time and reading all three lords together. Our free kundli software vs real reading guide explains what a calculator can and cannot do.
Simple Upay for a Difficult Pratyantar
For a pratyantar that feels heavy, choose one of these simple steps. Upay 1: on the weekday of the pratyantar lord, spend ten minutes in a quiet place with a lit lamp and write the one thing you will do next. Do it on that weekday for 11 weeks. It costs nothing. Upay 2: give a simple meal or ten to twenty rupees to someone in need on the same weekday, for 11 weeks. Upay 3: keep one daily routine for 40 days, free. Choose one, not all. Avoid expensive gemstones as a first step. A short pratyantar will pass, so use it to plan, not to worry.
Myths About Pratyantar Dasha
Myth one: a bad pratyantar means disaster. The sub-period is only the third level and is balanced by the mahadasha and antardasha. Myth two: the calculator is always exact to the day. It depends on birth time, ayanamsa and year length. Myth three: you need to wear a stone for each lord. A stone is not a standard first step. Myth four: pratyantar predicts exact events. It suggests windows, not certainties. Myth five: only the mahadasha matters. The antardasha and pratyantar shape the actual months. A fear-free, stepwise approach works best. The Shasha Yoga guide shows how a strong yoga can change the reading of any Saturn period.
When to Use a Calculator and When to Book a Reading
A calculator is perfect for finding your current mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantar quickly. A human reading adds the judgement: planet strength, house ownership, aspects, navamsha and the interplay between dasha and transit. If you are making a big decision, such as a job change, marriage timing or investment, a human reading is worth it. For Delhi NCR, see astrologer in Delhi. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pratyantar dasha?
It is the third level of the Vimshottari system, a sub-sub-period of one planet inside an antardasha, inside a mahadasha. It times events at the level of weeks and months. Check yours with the [Dasha Calculator](/calculators/free-dasha-calculator).
What is the formula for pratyantar dasha?
Mahadasha years times antardasha years times pratyantar lord years, divided by 14,400, gives the length in years. Multiply by 365.25 for days.
How long is a pratyantar dasha?
It ranges from a few weeks to several months depending on the three planets involved. In Saturn-Mercury, for example, pratyantars run from about 49 to 164 days.
Which pratyantar comes first in an antardasha?
The antardasha lord's own pratyantar comes first, and the rest follow in the Vimshottari order of Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus.
Is pratyantar dasha more important than antardasha?
No. The mahadasha and antardasha set the larger story, and the pratyantar adds timing detail. Read all three together.
Why does my pratyantar date differ between calculators?
Usually because of year length (360 or 365.25 days), ayanamsa choice or rounding. Trikaal Vaani uses Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa.
Can I calculate pratyantar dasha without a birth time?
Only roughly. Without the exact time, the Moon's degree and the balance of dasha are uncertain, so pratyantar dates may be off by weeks or months. See the [birth time accuracy guide](/blog/birth-time-accuracy-kundli-rectification).
Can a pratyantar predict marriage or job dates?
It can suggest likely windows when read with the mahadasha, antardasha and transits, but it cannot fix an exact date. A human reading improves reliability.
What is the best remedy in a difficult pratyantar?
Spend ten minutes on the weekday of the pratyantar lord with a lit lamp, writing the next action, for 11 weeks. It is free. Avoid expensive stones as a first step.
What comes after pratyantar dasha?
Sookshma dasha, lasting days, and then prana dasha, lasting hours. They need a very exact birth time and are usually treated as a small signal.
