Planetary Dignity -- Exaltation and Debilitation
Where a planet sits by sign matters independently of house lordship. An exalted planet performs closer to its best-case potential; a debilitated one usually underperforms, unless Neecha Bhanga (cancellation of debilitation) applies through specific classical conditions. Dignity is one input into Shadbala's Sthana Bala component, not a separate standalone score, which is why a planet can have excellent dignity and still have mediocre overall strength once the other five Shadbala components are counted. A debilitated functional benefic is not automatically written off, either -- if it also carries strong directional, temporal or aspectual strength, it can still cross its required Shadbala minimum despite the weak sign placement.
Combustion
A planet sitting too close to the Sun is considered combust (Asta) -- its light is said to be overwhelmed, and its ability to give results, including through its gemstone, is weakened or distorted. Combustion applies at different angular distances for different planets, and a combust functional benefic is one of the more common reasons an otherwise theoretically-favourable stone underperforms in practice. Saturn is the Lagnesh and sits in its own sign, giving it the strongest possible Sthana Bala on paper -- rule one and rule five both point favourable before any other check runs.
