Exaltation and Debilitation: The Two Extremes
Each of the seven classical planets has exactly one sign of exaltation and one sign of debilitation, always the exact opposite sign on the zodiac wheel, and each has a specific degree within that sign where the effect peaks:
- Sun: exalted in Aries at 10 degrees; debilitated in Libra at 10 degrees
- Moon: exalted in Taurus at 3 degrees; debilitated in Scorpio at 3 degrees
- Mars: exalted in Capricorn at 28 degrees; debilitated in Cancer at 28 degrees
- Mercury: exalted in Virgo at 15 degrees; debilitated in Pisces at 15 degrees
- Jupiter: exalted in Cancer at 5 degrees; debilitated in Capricorn at 5 degrees

Moolatrikona: A Third Tier Between Exaltation and Own Sign
Moolatrikona (literally root-triangle) is a specific degree-range within a sign, distinct from plain exaltation or ordinary own-sign placement, where a planet is considered to function with particular comfort and consistency. For six of the seven planets, the Moolatrikona zone falls inside the planet's own sign; Moon is the sole exception, with its Moolatrikona falling in Taurus, the very sign of its exaltation, rather than in Cancer, its own sign. The commonly cited ranges are: Sun in Leo (roughly the first 20 degrees), Moon in Taurus (roughly 4 to 20 degrees), Mars in Aries (0 to 12 degrees), Mercury in Virgo (16 to 20 degrees, immediately after its own exaltation point), Jupiter in Sagittarius (0 to 10 degrees), Venus in Libra (0 to 15 degrees), and Saturn in Aquarius (roughly the first 20 degrees). Classical texts genuinely differ on the exact boundaries for a couple of these -- Sun and Saturn specifically show some variation between Bala Bhadra's Hora Ratnam and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra -- which is worth knowing rather than treating any single source as beyond dispute.
The Fivefold Relationship: Friendly, Neutral and Enemy Signs
Beyond exaltation, Moolatrikona and own sign, a planet's dignity also depends on whether the sign it occupies is ruled by a natural friend, a neutral party, or an enemy of that planet -- classical texts call this Panchadha Maitri, the fivefold relationship, ranging from great friend through friend, neutral, enemy, to great enemy. This combines a planet's fixed natural friendships with temporary friendships based on the current chart, and it forms a further layer of dignity below own-sign strength but above plain sign-transit with no relationship at all.
Neecha Bhanga: When Debilitation Gets Cancelled
A debilitated planet is not always read as simply weak. Classical texts describe several conditions under which debilitation is cancelled, known as Neecha Bhanga -- commonly when the lord of the debilitation sign is itself well-placed (in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon, or exalted), or when the planet that would be exalted in that same sign aspects or conjoins the debilitated planet. When these conditions are met, a debilitated planet can perform far better than its raw sign placement suggests, and in some readings can even produce results comparable to an exalted one -- a genuinely significant reversal that a surface-level chart reading focused only on sign placement would miss entirely. To make this concrete: Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, so if that natal Saturn happens to sit in a kendra from the Lagna, one classical condition for Neecha Bhanga is already satisfied, and the debilitated Jupiter's practical effect can shift meaningfully away from what its bare sign placement alone would suggest.
Why Dignity Matters for Gemstone Selection
Dignity is one of the inputs into Sthana Bala, itself one of the six components of Shadbala, rather than a separate, standalone suitability factor. An exalted functional benefic is about as strong a gemstone case as the system produces; a debilitated functional benefic, without Neecha Bhanga, generally makes for a weaker case even though the functional role itself has not changed. Dignity never overrides functional benefic-or-malefic status -- a debilitated functional malefic is still a functional malefic, simply a weaker one, and an exalted functional malefic is a stronger, more concerning one, not a suddenly favourable planet. What About Rahu and Ketu?
Since Rahu and Ketu do not own any zodiac sign, classical texts disagree more than they do for the seven true planets on whether the nodes have exaltation and debilitation signs at all, and if so, which ones. The most commonly cited view places Rahu's exaltation in Taurus or Gemini with debilitation in Scorpio or Sagittarius, and Ketu's exaltation in Scorpio or Sagittarius with debilitation in Taurus or Gemini -- mirroring each other, as the two nodes always do. Given the genuine lack of classical consensus here, dignity for the nodes is generally treated as a softer, less decisive factor than it is for the seven sign-owning planets, and their gemstone suitability leans more heavily on house placement and dispositor strength than on this specific dignity ladder.
Common Misconceptions About Dignity
An exalted planet is always good news for its gemstone -- only if that planet is also a functional benefic for your Lagna; an exalted functional malefic is a stronger malefic, not a safer one. A debilitated planet's gemstone should always be avoided -- not necessarily, since Neecha Bhanga can substantially or fully cancel the debilitation, and even without it, a functional benefic that is merely debilitated (rather than severely afflicted in several other ways too) is not automatically written off. Moolatrikona and own sign are the same thing -- for six of the seven planets they overlap partially, but the degree ranges differ, and Moon's Moolatrikona sits entirely outside its own sign. Dignity alone tells you everything about a planet's real strength -- it is one input into Sthana Bala, which is itself only one of six Shadbala components, so a planet with excellent dignity can still have unremarkable overall strength once directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual strength are all counted alongside it.
Worked Example: Saturn's Exaltation and Two Yogakaraka Lagnas

If that same native's actual Mercury happens to sit debilitated in Pisces, the case for Panna weakens further still, compounding an already-mixed functional verdict with poor dignity rather than offsetting it. Two natives can share the identical Sagittarius Lagna and get meaningfully different Mercury verdicts purely from where their actual Mercury sits by degree, which is exactly the layer a lagna-only reading cannot see.

A birth time that is off by even a few minutes can shift a planet's calculated degree enough to change whether it reads as deeply exalted, mildly favourable, or merely neutral within the same sign -- which is exactly why an approximate remembered birth time deserves the same caution here as it does for Shadbala's more time-sensitive components.
Dignity Across the Nine Planets, Not Just the Seven
Dignity as described on this page applies fully to the seven classical planets, each with its own exaltation and debilitation sign. Rahu and Ketu sit outside this framework in the strict classical sense, discussed above, which is a genuinely different situation from simply having weak dignity -- it reflects a real gap in classical consensus rather than a settled weak verdict for the nodes.
Why Two Charts With the Same Lagna Can Diverge So Sharply
Functional status is fixed once your Lagna is known -- it never changes between two natives sharing that ascendant. Dignity, by contrast, is entirely a function of the moment of birth, which is precisely why two people with an identical Lagna and an identical favourable planet can end up with gemstone verdicts that feel nothing alike once dignity, Shadbala and combustion are all layered on top of that shared starting point.
