Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer

Mokshada Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday, 20 December, the same day as Geeta Jayanti. By the Delhi NCR panchang, Ekadashi begins on 19 December at 22:09 and ends on 20 December at 20:15. Break the fast on Monday, 21 December, after sunrise at 07:13. Match the timings with your own city.

Deep Dive Analysis

Mokshada Ekadashi 2026 date and tithi timing

Mokshada Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday, 20 December. According to the Trikaal Vaani panchang engine for Delhi NCR, the Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi tithi begins on 19 December at 22:09 and runs until 20 December at 20:15. Because the day of an Ekadashi fast is decided by the tithi present at sunrise, the fast is kept on 20 December. The full list of fasts for the year is in our Ekadashi vrat dates 2026 guide, and the day by day timings are on the 20 December panchang page. Times shift by a few minutes in other cities, so match them with your local sunrise.

What Mokshada means and where it sits in the Ekadashi year

Mokshada means the one that gives moksha, or release. It is the Ekadashi of the bright half of Margashirsha, the month that follows Kartik, and it is counted among the best known Ekadashis of the closing months of the year. Moksha here need not be read only as liberation after death. Lightening the load of old habits, guilt and needless worry also fits the idea. The Ekadashi that comes about a month earlier is Devutthana Ekadashi, which opens the wedding season, and a later fast to plan for is Putrada Ekadashi in January 2027.

Geeta Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi on the same day

By tradition, Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi is also observed as Geeta Jayanti, remembering the teaching Krishna gave to Arjuna at Kurukshetra. In 2026 both fall on 20 December, so the day carries a fast and a day for reading and reflection together. The simple way to honour both is to pair the fast with a few quiet minutes of study. Full details of the festival are on the Geeta Jayanti 2026 page. You do not need to read the whole text, because even one verse read with attention fits the spirit of the day.

20 December 2026 panchang for Delhi NCR

On Sunday, 20 December 2026, sunrise in Delhi NCR is at 07:13 and sunset at 17:24. At sunrise the tithi is Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha, which lasts until 20:15. The nakshatra is Ashwini until about 14:55 and then Bharani, the yoga at sunrise is Parigha, and the karana is Vanija until 09:18, after which Vishti begins. These five limbs, tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, make up the panchang. You can look up any date in the panchang calendar or learn how to read the limbs in the panchang and choghadiya guide.

Why Ekadashi is decided by the sunrise tithi

Ekadashi is the eleventh tithi. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun, and the eleventh one covers the stretch from 120 to 132 degrees of that gap. Tithis do not start at sunrise, so one tithi can touch two sunrises or none. For most fasts the tithi present at sunrise names the day, and this is the rule followed here. In 2026 the Ekadashi tithi lasts about 22 hours, from 22:09 on 19 December to 20:15 on 20 December, and it covers the sunrise of 20 December only. Learn the daily reading in what tithi is it today.

Margashirsha Shukla: the month and the half of the lunar cycle

Margashirsha is the lunar month in which the full moon lies near Mrigashira nakshatra, and that is how it gets its name. Shukla Paksha is the bright half, running from the new moon to the full moon, and its eleventh tithi is the Ekadashi we are following. Each lunar month has two Ekadashis, one in the bright half and one in the dark half, which is why the year holds about twenty four of them. Mokshada is the bright half one of this month. The dark half and full moon of the month are covered in the Purnima dates 2026 guide and the Amavasya dates 2026 guide.

Dashami evening on 19 December: how to prepare

On Saturday, 19 December, sunrise is at 07:12 and the tithi at that time is still Dashami of the Shukla Paksha, which ends at 22:09. Keep dinner light and sattvik that evening, avoid rice, garlic and onion, and tidy the puja corner. Pluck the tulsi leaves you will need in advance, since tulsi is traditionally not plucked on Ekadashi itself. Sleep early so that the early bath is easy in the December cold. The 19 December panchang shows that day in full.

Which day to keep the fast: what the classical rule says

Sometimes Ekadashi touches two sunrises and families ask which day to keep. Uttarakalamrita lays down the choice between the earlier and the later day, and points to Dwadashi when Ekadashi is missing on the later day.[1] It also says that an Ekadashi tainted by Dashami is set aside like poison, with the fast kept on Dwadashi and parana after it, which it calls the Vaishnava accepted view.[2] In 2026 neither case arises. Dashami ends at 22:09 on 19 December, before the Ekadashi day begins at sunrise, and Ekadashi ends at 20:15 that evening. So 20 December is a clean day for every tradition, and nobody needs to choose between dates.

Parana time on 21 December: when to break the fast

Parana means breaking the fast, and it is done on Dwadashi after sunrise. On Monday, 21 December, sunrise in Delhi is at 07:13 and Dwadashi lasts until 17:36, so the whole morning is open. Rahu Kaal that day is from 08:29 to 09:45, and many families simply avoid that window, which leaves 07:13 to 08:29 or any time after 09:45. Begin with prasad and water, then take a light meal. Check the 21 December panchang for your own city before you plan the morning.

Hari Vasara and the parana caution

Hari Vasara is the last quarter of Ekadashi together with the first quarter of Dwadashi, and tradition says parana is not taken within it. In 2026 Ekadashi ends at 20:15 on 20 December, so the first quarter of Dwadashi, about five hours and twenty minutes long, ends near 01:35 on 21 December, well before sunrise. That leaves the morning of 21 December free of this restriction for Delhi NCR. If you live in another city, take the local sunrise and tithi end from the panchang for your city and check the same two numbers. One rule works everywhere: parana after sunrise, and never before Hari Vasara has ended.

Morning vrat and puja vidhi on 20 December

Wake before sunrise at 07:13, bathe and wear clean clothes, preferably yellow or white. Place a picture or idol of Vishnu or Krishna on a clean stool, light a ghee lamp, take water in your hand and make a short sankalp that you will keep the fast with devotion and a calm mind. Offer yellow flowers, tulsi leaves and fruit. Keep the sankalp small and honest, for example that you will eat only fruit and stay peaceful today. The free Shubh Muhurat calculator shows the good and poor windows for the rest of your day.

Puja samagri: simple is enough

A stool, yellow cloth, an image of Vishnu or Krishna, a ghee lamp, incense, sandalwood paste, yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, fruit, a little sugar candy and a pot of water are enough. Families who keep a Geeta at home can place it on a clean cloth beside the lamp. Spending more does not make the worship stronger, so use what is already in the house. The wider habit of preparing for worship and ceremonies on good timings is gathered in the Shubh Muhurat hub, where every life event has its own calculator.

Vishnu and Krishna mantra and japa

Both Vishnu and Krishna are worshipped today, Vishnu because Ekadashi is his tithi and Krishna because of the Geeta teaching. The simplest mantra is Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. One mala of 108 repetitions takes about fifteen minutes. Good windows for japa are the calm morning, the Abhijit window from 11:58 to 12:38, or the evening after sunset at 17:24. Steady attention matters more than the count. End with a lamp aarti and share the prasad with the family. The method behind good and poor windows is explained in the choghadiya and panchang guide.

A fifteen minute Geeta reading plan

Reading the whole Geeta is not needed. Sit quietly for fifteen minutes, read or listen to a few verses from one chapter, and then write their meaning in one sentence in your own words. Children can be told the idea as a short story. The teaching of balance in action and freedom from clinging fits the spirit of Mokshada. This page does not quote any verse from the Geeta, so there is no citation here for it. The pooja and reading notes for the festival itself sit on the Geeta Jayanti event page.

The Mokshada Ekadashi vrat katha

In the popular story, King Vaikhanasa of Champaka Nagar once dreamed that his father was suffering in a lower realm. Worried, he asked the sages for a remedy, and the sage Parvata advised him to keep the Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi fast and offer its merit to his father. The king kept the fast with his family and full devotion, and the story says his father found peace. Retellings differ from region to region, so hold on to the spirit of the story and not its exact words. This is a tradition story and not a verse from the texts we cite on this page.

The message of the katha: gratitude toward ancestors

The centre of the story is gratitude, not punishment. The king worries about his father and chooses service and restraint. In daily life that means remembering ancestors, following their good teachings and serving people in need. Nobody should be frightened about ancestors or about a chart because of this fast. For a calm, chart based understanding read what Pitra Dosha really means and the Pitra Dosha guide, and test your own chart with the Pitra Dosha calculator.

What to eat and what to leave on Ekadashi

Fruit, milk, curd, makhana, sabudana, water chestnut flour, buckwheat flour, potato and sweet potato with rock salt are commonly taken. Rice and all grains are left out on the day. In winter, warm milk, peanuts and jaggery sweets are also accepted as fasting food. Meat, alcohol, garlic and onion are avoided, and tea and coffee are kept low. People with diabetes or acidity should not stay on an empty stomach for long and should take something light at intervals. Daily health habits can be explored further with the health prediction calculator.

What not to do on Ekadashi

Tradition asks for less anger, no gossip, no lying, no daytime sleep and no quarrels. Many homes also postpone haircuts and oil massage. Treat these as discipline and not as fear. If you cannot keep every rule, pick two or three and keep them fully, which is better than a long list kept half heartedly. This practice steadies the mind, and more ways to settle the mind through the chart are described in mental health in Vedic astrology.

Moon in Aries with Ashwini and Bharani: the sky on 20 December

On 20 December the Moon is in Aries, the sign of Mars. Ashwini nakshatra lasts until about 14:55 and Bharani follows. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu and is linked with fresh starts and healing, while Bharani is ruled by Venus. Aries gives energy, so a light walk or a few minutes of pranayama suits a fasting day. The morning is a good time to set one resolution. To know your own birth nakshatra use the Nakshatra calculator and read the nakshatra guide.

Vanija then Vishti: the karana on Ekadashi

On 20 December the karana is Vanija until 09:18 and then Vishti, also called Bhadra, until the Ekadashi ends at 20:15. Muhurta Chintamani says that in the bright half Bhadra falls in the later half of Ekadashi and of Chaturthi.[3] Bhadra does not stop a fast, a puja or japa. It is mainly a caution for starting fresh ventures or celebrations, so keep those for another day. The topic is explained with its exceptions in the Bhadra section of the Shubh Muhurat hub.

Sun in Sagittarius: Kharmas begins

In mid December the Sun enters Sagittarius, and on 20 December it is near 4 degrees of the sign. The period of the Sun in Sagittarius is called Kharmas, when weddings and similar auspicious sanskars are postponed by tradition, while worship, fasting and charity continue without any bar. So Mokshada can be kept fully during Kharmas. Families planning weddings can look at the December 2026 Vivah Muhurat and the January 2027 Vivah Muhurat pages for dates and for the period after Kharmas.

Saturn in Pisces and Jupiter in Leo on this date

By the panchang engine, on 20 December Saturn is in Pisces near 13.8 degrees and is moving forward at a slow pace, while Jupiter is in Leo near 2.7 degrees and is moving backward, which is called retrograde. Saturn in Pisces points toward introspection, surrender and depth, which matches the theme of moksha. This is the general sky and not a prediction for any one person. How Jupiter in Leo touches each moon sign is in Jupiter in Leo 2026 for all 12 signs, and the wider picture is in the Jupiter transit 2026 overview.

Rahu in Capricorn and Ketu in Cancer: the new axis

By the mean node, on 20 December Rahu is in Capricorn near 29.2 degrees and Ketu is in Cancer near 29.2 degrees. Both shadow planets have only recently entered these signs, in early December, and they will stay on this axis through 2027. Rahu relates to desire and illusion and Ketu to detachment and release, so the Mokshada theme of release is a gentle moment to know their position. It is arithmetic and not a reason for fear. Read the Rahu Ketu transit 2026 overview and the Rahu Ketu transit safety guide, and see what Ketu stands for in a dasha.

Inauspicious periods on 20 December: Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika

In Delhi NCR on 20 December, Rahu Kaal is from 16:07 to 17:24, Yamaganda from 12:18 to 13:34 and Gulika from 14:51 to 16:07. Abhijit Muhurat is from 11:58 to 12:38. Tradition avoids fresh beginnings and money dealings in the first three windows, but puja and reading are not stopped by them. Still, placing the main worship outside these windows keeps the mind free of doubt. You can read the choghadiya guide for these windows in simple steps.

Moksha in the birth chart: the 4th, 8th and 12th houses

In Vedic astrology the 4th, 8th and 12th houses are called the moksha triangle, linked with peace of mind in the 4th, deep change in the 8th and letting go in the 12th. Ketu is seen as the planet of release. This does not mean that planets in these houses make life hard. It only shows where a person may feel a spiritual search or a need for distance, and every difficulty comes with its own balance and remedy. For the basics read about the houses in astrology and the nine planets, and check your own chart with the free Janam Kundali calculator.

Upay 1: write the meaning of one Geeta verse, in five lines

What to do: read one verse of the Geeta and write its meaning in one sentence in your own words. When: Sunday, 20 December, after sunrise at 07:13 or in the Abhijit window from 11:58 to 12:38. Cost: free, only a notebook and a pen. How many days: 11 days in a row, until 30 December. Why for you: the habit holds the mind on one idea, which eases restlessness when the Moon or Ketu is weak in a chart. Caution: focus on the meaning and not on memorising, and cut the effort down if you are tired. You can see weak planets in your chart with the weak planet finder.

Upay 2: give a warm cloth or blanket, in five lines

What to do: give a warm cloth, a blanket or woollen socks to someone in need. When: Monday, 21 December, after parana and sunrise at 07:13, or the evening of 20 December. Cost: Rs 100 to Rs 300 for a cloth, or a clean old blanket in good condition from home. How many days: once on this Ekadashi, and two or three more times this winter if you wish. Why for you: charity is the most practical service in the December cold and it suits the release theme of Mokshada, easing the giving theme of the 12th house. Caution: give within your means, never on borrowed money and never for show.

Upay 3: a lamp and water for ancestors, in five lines

What to do: light one lamp, keep a small pot of water and bow to your ancestors with gratitude. When: Sunday, 20 December, in the evening after sunset at 17:24. Cost: a few rupees for oil or ghee, and water. How many days: begin with this one evening and repeat on a later Amavasya if you like. Why for you: the Mokshada story is about remembering forefathers, and gratitude lightens the mind. Caution: do it with calm gratitude and not with fear or guilt. A chart based check is available in the Pitra Dosha calculator, and the Amavasya tarpan remedies explain the next steps.

Fasting in winter: who should take extra care

A long fast in the December cold can tire the body. Pregnant women, small children, elderly people and patients with diabetes, blood pressure or heart disease should not keep a strict fast without the advice of their doctor. They can keep a partial fast with warm milk, fruit and light food, and keep the spirit of the day through worship, japa and charity. Avoid sitting for long in the open for puja. Tradition itself relaxes the rules for the sick, so adapt the vow to comfort and safety.

Family and working people: how to manage the day

Since 20 December is a Sunday, most people are at home, which suits puja, reading and family time. Working people will have parana on Monday morning and can plan office time around it, and parana between 07:13 and 08:29 is the simplest slot. Let the family read one verse together and explain its meaning to the children. Families living apart can do the evening aarti together on a video call. Check your own city timings on the panchang and your day luck with the lucky day calculator.

Common myths about Mokshada Ekadashi

The biggest myth is that Mokshada Ekadashi is only for the time after death. In the language of the texts, moksha means freedom from bondage, and its practice is possible in life too. A second myth is that a missed fast brings harm, yet tradition gives relief and a remedy for every strict rule. If a fast is missed, begin again on the next Ekadashi with a simple resolution. More plain guidance on other fasts is in the Ekadashi vrat dates guide and on the Devutthana Ekadashi 2026 page.

After Mokshada: Kharmas, Makar Sankranti and the new year

After Mokshada the Sun stays in Sagittarius and Kharmas continues. In January the Sun enters Capricorn on Makar Sankranti 2027, and the Makar Sankranti event page has the punya kaal. The auspicious season then opens again, and the meaning of that day in the chart is explained in Makar Sankranti astrology. If you are planning a wedding see the wider Vivah Muhurat 2027 guide. A later fast to plan for is Jaya Ekadashi 2027.

How these timings were calculated and why you can rely on them

All times and planet positions on this page come from the Trikaal Vaani panchang engine, which uses Swiss Ephemeris, the Lahiri ayanamsha and the sunrise based tithi decision. The tithi, karana and planet positions were also cross checked with an independent astronomical calculation. The method is overseen by Rohiit Gupta, Chief Vedic Architect, who has more than 16 years of Parashari practice. Times are for Delhi NCR and may differ by a few minutes in other cities. They can also be refined if our calculation improves, so look at the panchang once more before the fast. Read the basics in what tithi is it today.

Check your own muhurat and remedies by your chart

A panchang gives everyone the same day, but the dasha and transits running in your own chart are different. Before you take your resolution, enter your birth details in the free Shubh Muhurat calculator, then look at the Moon and Ketu in your chart through the Janam Kundali calculator. To know the running period use the Dasha calculator, and for simple remedies use the Upay calculator. All first checks are free.
