Deep Dive Analysis
Valmiki Jayanti 2026 date and Purnima tithi timing
Valmiki Jayanti 2026 falls on Monday, 26 October. According to the Trikaal Vaani panchang engine for Delhi NCR, the Ashwin Shukla Purnima tithi begins on Sunday, 25 October at 11:56 and ends on Monday, 26 October at 09:41 IST. Sunrise in Delhi on the 26th is at 06:32, so Purnima is present at sunrise and the day is kept on Monday. Because the tithi spans two dates, our Sharad Purnima 2026 page puts the moon-worship night on 25 October and the bath and charity morning on 26 October. This page follows the same timings. The full list of full moon dates is in Purnima dates for 2026, and the day by day timings are on the 26 October panchang. Check your own city, since times shift by a few minutes.
What the sources say about the date and timing
We cross checked the date against other published panchangs. Drik Panchang lists Valmiki Jayanti on Monday, 26 October 2026, with Purnima from 11:55 on 25 October to 09:41 on 26 October for New Delhi. GaneshaSpeaks also lists Monday, 26 October, with the tithi from 11:57 to 09:42, and does not state a time zone or city. Our own engine gives 11:56 and 09:41. The one or two minute differences come from the ayanamsha, the rounding and the observer location, and no source disagrees on the day. If your family uses a regional panchang, such as a Tamil or Telugu one, its Purnima timing may differ by a few minutes more, so treat the minute level as approximate and the date as firm. Learn how a tithi is found in what tithi is it today.
Valmiki Jayanti 2026 at a glance: Delhi NCR panchang for 26 October
On Monday, 26 October 2026 the Moon is in Ashwini nakshatra until 17:41 according to our engine, and the yoga is Vajra until 14:17. Sunrise is at 06:32 and sunset at 17:37. The weekday belongs to the Moon, which pairs naturally with a Purnima. The Purnima tithi ends at 09:41, so the morning hours are the main window for puja, bath and charity for those who follow the tithi at sunrise. A simple way to plan is to finish worship before 09:41 and keep the rest of the day for seva and reading. To read the five limbs of any day, see the panchang and choghadiya guide, and for your own city open the Delhi panchang, Mumbai panchang or Kolkata panchang.
Who was Maharshi Valmiki: the tradition in brief
Maharshi Valmiki is traditionally honoured as the Adi Kavi, the first poet, and as the author of the Ramayana, the epic of Shri Ram. This is a statement of tradition and literature and not an astrology claim. Accounts of his early life differ between regions and retellings. A widely told story says he was once a man called Ratnakara who lived by waylaying travellers, and that the sage Narada guided him to the name of Ram. He is said to have meditated so long that an anthill, a valmika, grew around him, and he was named Valmiki after it. Other families tell the story differently, and scholars treat the details as devotional narrative. What is common to all versions is the idea that a person can turn from harm to wisdom, which is why the day inspires so many people.
The first shloka and the birth of Sanskrit verse
Tradition says that Valmiki was bathing at the Tamasa river when he saw a hunter strike down one of a pair of Krauncha birds. His grief took the form of a verse that came to him in a new rhythm, and he understood that sorrow had become shloka. The Ramayana is then said to have been composed in that metre, which is why he is called the Adi Kavi and the epic the Adi Kavya. Whether read as history or as a poetic account of how literature begins, the story is the reason Valmiki Jayanti is treated as a festival of poets, teachers, students and readers as well as devotees. Many schools hold recitations on this day.
Valmiki Jayanti and Ashwin Purnima: why this tithi
Valmiki Jayanti is observed on Ashwin Purnima, the full moon of the Hindu month of Ashwin in the Purnimanta reckoning. In the Amanta reckoning used in parts of southern and western India this full moon belongs to the month of Ashwin as well, and in both systems the festival date is the same. Tradition holds that the sage was born on this day, and in North India it is also called Pragat Diwas, the day of manifestation. The tithi is chosen by the full moon and not by a fixed calendar date, so the day moves between October dates from year to year. In 2026 it falls late in the month, close to Sharad Purnima and the start of the festival season that leads to Diwali.
How Valmiki Jayanti relates to Sharad Purnima in 2026
Both observances belong to the same Ashwin Purnima, which is why people ask whether they are the same day. They share a tithi but they are different in character. Sharad Purnima is a night observance, with moonrise worship, kheer under the moon and Kojagari Lakshmi puja, and in 2026 that night is 25 October. Valmiki Jayanti is a day observance of remembering the sage, and it is kept on 26 October because the tithi is present at sunrise. A family can do both: moon worship on the 25th evening and Valmiki puja on the 26th morning. Read the details in our Sharad Purnima 2026 guide, which is written in Hindi, and compare the fasting logic with Ekadashi vrat dates 2026.
Which day to observe if the tithi spans two dates
The simple rule used on this page is that a daytime festival goes to the day on which the tithi is present at sunrise, and a night festival goes to the night in which the tithi is present at moonrise. On 25 October Purnima begins at 11:56, after sunrise, so the sunrise tithi of that day is still Chaturdashi. On 26 October the sunrise tithi is Purnima. This points Valmiki Jayanti to the 26th. If your temple, community or family elders follow a different custom, such as observing the full night of the 25th, follow their instruction first, because local practice has its own weight. The Shubh Muhurat hub explains how we treat tithi, nakshatra and karana together when we choose an auspicious window.
Panchang for 25 October 2026, the evening before
The evening before is when many families begin preparing. On Sunday, 25 October the Purnima tithi starts at 11:56, and the Moon moves from Revati into Ashwini at 19:22 according to our Sharad Purnima page. That evening is for moon worship and kheer. Those who plan the Valmiki puja for the next morning can clean the puja corner, soak or cook the offerings, and keep the book or picture ready. Look at the 25 October panchang for the full list of the day's periods, and note that the Bhadra caution below applies to that day and not to the morning of the 26th.
Bhadra on Purnima: does it affect the 26 October morning
Muhurta Chintamani places Bhadra, the Vishti karana, in the first half of the bright Purnima.[1] The first half of this Purnima is the period from 11:56 on 25 October to roughly 22:48 the same night, since the tithi lasts about 21 hours 45 minutes. So Bhadra is a matter for the 25th and it should not touch the Valmiki puja on the morning of the 26th, when the second half of the tithi is running. This is our approximate working from the tithi length and not a published karana table, so confirm the exact karana change on your local panchang. Bhadra is a caution for starting new ventures and not a bar on worship, as we explain in the Mokshada Ekadashi 2026 guide.
Rahu Kaal and other cautions on 26 October
Rahu Kaal on a Monday is the second of eight equal parts of the daytime. With sunrise at 06:32 and sunset at 17:37 in Delhi, each part is about 83 minutes, which puts Rahu Kaal at roughly 07:55 to 09:18. This is our own working from the standard method and it can differ by a few minutes in other cities. Since the Purnima tithi ends at 09:41, a convenient plan is to bathe and sit for puja at 06:45 to 07:45, or to begin after 09:18 and keep the main offering before the tithi ends. Rahu Kaal does not forbid prayer. It is only avoided for starting something new. For the method see our guide to Rahu Kaal timing, written in Hindi.
Valmiki Jayanti puja vidhi at home
A simple home puja needs no priest. Wake before sunrise, bathe and wear clean clothes. Place a picture of Maharshi Valmiki, or a copy of the Ramayana, on a clean cloth facing east or north. Light a ghee lamp and an incense stick, and make a short sankalp that you will spend the day in honest work, reading and service. Offer flowers, fruit and a sweet such as kheer or halwa. Read a few verses from the Ramayana, or listen to one chapter, and close with an aarti and a prayer for the well being of your family. Share the prasad with neighbours and household helpers. Check the best hours of the day with the free Shubh Muhurat calculator.
Puja samagri: simple is enough
You need a picture or idol of Valmiki or a copy of the Ramayana, a clean cloth or low stool, a lamp with ghee or oil, incense, fresh flowers, rice grains, a little sandal or kumkum, fruit and one sweet offering. If an item is missing, use clean water and a sincere mind in its place. Tradition accepts devotion over display. Many families also keep a notebook and pen near the puja corner and write a line they have learnt that day, in the spirit of the Adi Kavi. A longer version for a deity puja is shown in our Ganesh puja samagri list, and the same cleanliness rules apply. For a larger havan or community function, plan the hour with the puja and havan muhurat guide.
Temple and community observance: Pragat Diwas and shobha yatra
Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated with special warmth in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states, especially by the Valmiki community, who call the day Pragat Diwas. Typical events include a morning puja at Valmiki mandirs, kirtan and recitation of the Ramayana, langar or community meals, and a shobha yatra, a procession with the sage's image, music and decorated vehicles. Schools and cultural groups hold essay, poetry and speech events. In Chennai, the Thiruvanmiyur area is traditionally linked with the sage. Whether the day is a holiday depends on the state and year, so look at the official notice from your state government or employer. Programmes are listed on the events page.
Recitation plan: reading the Ramayana in a day
If you want to read, do not try to finish an epic in one day. A calm plan is to read a single chapter, or about twenty verses, in the morning and another in the evening. Families with children can read the story of the Krauncha bird and the birth of the first verse, and older readers can choose a chapter on duty or friendship. Sit on a clean mat, keep the phone away and read slowly. A short reading done with attention is worth more than a rushed long one. Students can end by revising one lesson from their own studies, since the day honours learning. Schedule a calm hour using the panchang for your city.
What to donate on Valmiki Jayanti
Charity on a Purnima is a long tradition, and on this day the best gifts are those that match the sage's life of learning and service. Good options are food for the hungry, kheer or sweets, clean clothes, books, notebooks and pens for children, and school fees or uniforms for a student who cannot pay. Rice, milk, sugar and white items are associated with the Moon and the Purnima, so a bag of rice or a litre of milk to a needy family also fits. Give with respect and within your means, and avoid showing off. If you are unsure what suits your own chart, the free Upay calculator offers a gentle starting point. Giving to someone who needs it is more important than the exact item.
Morning bath and daan before 09:41
For those who observe the Purnima bath, the tithi is present at sunrise on 26 October and ends at 09:41, so the bath and charity are best done before then. A holy river is ideal for those who can reach it, but a bath at home with a few drops of Ganga water, if you have it, is accepted. Wear clean clothes, face east for a short prayer, and give your charity the same morning. This timing matches the bath and daan morning described on our Sharad Purnima 2026 page, so the two pages agree. Those who cannot make it before 09:41 can still give later in the day, since the intent matters most.
Valmiki Jayanti do's and don'ts
Do keep the day clean, simple and kind. Do read, teach or listen to a story, and do share food. Do speak gently, since the sage's own story is about change of heart. Avoid anger, quarrels, alcohol and heavy non vegetarian food on the day, as many families do on festivals. Do not post or forward unverified stories as fact, since the sage's biography is told in many versions. Some traditions also keep restraint on Purnima, and Manusmriti advises a householder to keep to continence on Amavasya, Ashtami, Purnima and Chaturdashi.[5] This is a matter of personal custom and not a rule for everyone. Keep fasts light if you have a health condition.
Fasting on Valmiki Jayanti: optional and light
Valmiki Jayanti does not have one compulsory fast the way an Ekadashi does. Some people keep a light fast until the puja is done, taking fruit and milk, and others eat a normal vegetarian meal. If you also keep a Purnima fast for Sharad Purnima, follow the family custom of breaking it after moonrise puja on the 25th. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and people with diabetes or heart disease should not fast strictly without medical advice. The aim of the day is clarity and service, not hunger, so choose what keeps you comfortable. For comparison with stricter fasts see Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026.
Moon and Purnima in Vedic astrology: the plain meaning
A Purnima is the tithi when the Sun and Moon stand about 180 degrees apart and the Moon is fully lit. Vedic astrology links the Moon with the mind, emotions, memory and the mother. Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita says that bodily constitution comes from the Sun and mental constitution from the strength of the Moon.[2] Parashara counts the full Moon, with Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, among the planets that gain strength in rising order.[3] The Moon is also strongest in the bright half and weakest near the new moon, a rule used when judging the Moon's strength (paksha bala). Read more in the astrology of Purnima and about the Moon in your chart through Moon sign.
Moon in Ashwini on 26 October 2026
Through most of 26 October, until 17:41, the Moon travels in Ashwini nakshatra, which falls in Aries and is ruled by Ketu. Ashwini is linked in tradition with healing, speed and fresh beginnings, and its deity is the Ashwini Kumaras. Those born under Ashwini or with the Moon in Aries may feel the day's energy more directly, but this is not a prediction about any person. It is only a way to describe the sky. To find your own Moon sign and nakshatra, use the Nakshatra calculator or the Rashi calculator. A deeper walkthrough is in the Nakshatra guide and the Nakshatra calculator guide.
Sun in Libra and the Navaratri to Diwali season
The Sun is in Libra, Tula, in late October, a sign where it is traditionally called debilitated, and this is the sign of balance and fair dealing. Calling the Sun debilitated here does not mean the season is unlucky. It is a technical term for how a planet is placed, and festivals continue as normal. The weeks that follow bring Karva Chauth, Dhanteras and Diwali, so the Purnima sits at the start of a busy festival month. Our seasonal reading is in Diwali astrology 2026, and the preceding festival is covered in Navratri astrology 2026. Use the Purnima morning to set a calm intention before the rush.
Chandra remedies on a Purnima: a gentle approach
Remedies are not meant to frighten. If the Moon feels weak in your chart, the signs people mention are restlessness, poor sleep or mood swings, and these can have many other causes, including health, so see a doctor if they are strong. Classical practice prescribes Moon worship with the Apyayasva mantra in the shanti rites of the Samkranti and janma shanti chapter of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.[4] The three upay below are small, free or low cost and safe. Each is in five lines. Before you choose, look at the Moon in your chart with the free Janam Kundali calculator and the weak planet finder.
Upay 1: a lamp and a quiet prayer for the Moon, in five lines
What to do: light one ghee lamp after sunset and sit for ten minutes in a quiet prayer or the mantra Om Som Somaya Namah, 11 times. When: Monday, 26 October, after sunset at 17:37, or on the 25th evening if you are keeping Sharad Purnima. Cost: free, only a lamp and some ghee. How many days: 11 Mondays in a row if you wish to continue. Why for you: a fixed quiet routine steadies the mind, which is the Moon's area. Caution: it is a calming habit and not a cure, so seek medical help for ongoing sleep or mood problems. See your running period with the Dasha calculator.
Upay 2: white food donation on Monday, in five lines
What to do: give a packet of rice, a litre of milk or a small sweet to someone who needs it. When: Monday, 26 October, in the morning before 09:41. Cost: about 50 to 150 rupees, according to your means. How many days: once, and again on any Monday if you like. Why for you: Monday and white items belong to the Moon, and giving food is a kind, practical way of using the day. Caution: give with respect and do not take on debt to donate. A check of your own planets through the Graha bala calculator can show whether the Moon needs support in your chart.
Upay 3: write one thing you learnt, in five lines
What to do: write a short note on one thing you read or learnt today, in the spirit of the first poet, and keep it in a notebook. When: Monday, 26 October, at the end of your puja or in the evening. Cost: free, only a notebook and a pen. How many days: 11 days in a row, until 5 November. Why for you: writing slows the thoughts and gives the mind one calm subject, which supports the Moon's role as the planet of mind. Caution: keep it short, and do not turn it into a task that adds stress. You can see the strength of your chart with the Kundali strength calculator.
Purnima and Moon-related dasha: what to look at in your own chart
A festival date is the same for everyone, but the effect of the Moon depends on your chart: its sign, house, nakshatra and the running dasha. People in a Chandra mahadasha often notice themes of emotion and home more strongly, which we explain in Moon mahadasha and mental well being. The Moon also links with ancestors in some charts, as covered in Moon and Pitra dosh. If you want to see your own timeline, use the Dasha calculator, and learn how periods work in Mahadasha explained. Treat all of this as information and not as a warning.
Is it a good day to start something new
A Purnima is generally considered a bright, full tithi, and a Monday is the Moon's day, so many people feel it is suited to learning, writing, reading and charity. Starting a school term, a course or a creative project fits the sage's theme. For major events such as a wedding, griha pravesh, a vehicle purchase or a business launch, a single tithi is not enough. You also need nakshatra, vaar, karana and the person's chart. Ashwini Moon is regarded as light and quick in the classical lists. Check the full picture with the Shubh Muhurat calculator, and see wedding windows in the November 2026 vivah muhurat and December 2026 vivah muhurat pages.
Family and city life: how to keep the day without a temple visit
Not everyone can visit a mandir or join a procession. At home, a ten minute puja, a short reading and a charity that same day are enough. Office goers can keep a small picture at the desk, read a few lines on the commute and give lunch to someone who needs it. Parents can tell children the story of the first verse and ask them to write a short poem of their own. Join a community recitation online if you cannot attend. The point is attention and kindness and not scale. For planning your week, the lucky day calculator can help you see which days suit your chart.
Common myths about Valmiki Jayanti
One myth is that the day is only for one community, when in fact people of all backgrounds read and honour the Ramayana. Another is that the exact life story is settled, when different regions tell it differently. A third is that the festival always falls on the same date, when it follows the Ashwin full moon and so moves each year. Some people also confuse it with Sharad Purnima, which is the same tithi but a different observance. There is also no need to fear or avoid anything on the day, and no remedy is compulsory. Our reading of the Purnima is in Purnima astrology significance, which gives the fear free view.
After Valmiki Jayanti: the festival weeks ahead
The weeks after Ashwin Purnima move into Kartik, the month of lamps. Karva Chauth, Dhanteras and Diwali follow in the coming days, then Tulsi Vivah and Dev Uthani Ekadashi bring the wedding season back. If you are planning a family event, start with the Tulsi Vivah 2026 guide and the Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 guide. Pitru Paksha has already passed this year, but you can revisit it in Pitru Paksha 2026. To see the next Amavasya, open Amavasya dates 2026. Dates for the year ahead are listed in 2027 lucky dates.
How these timings were calculated and how far to trust them
The Purnima timings and the sunrise on this page come from the Trikaal Vaani panchang engine for Delhi NCR, which uses Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsha, and the festival day follows the sunrise tithi rule. We cross checked the date and tithi against Drik Panchang and GaneshaSpeaks, and they agree on Monday, 26 October with differences of one or two minutes in the tithi. The Rahu Kaal and Bhadra windows are our own working and are marked as approximate. The method is overseen by Rohiit Gupta, Chief Vedic Architect, who has more than 16 years of Parashari practice. Please verify the final minute with your local panchang or temple, and see our daily panchang once more on the day.
