What Is the Lagna in Vedic Astrology
Look at the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The sign just rising there is your lagna. Jyotish takes that sign as the 1st house, the next sign as the 2nd house, and so on around the 12 houses. Every planet is then read by the house it falls in, which is why the lagna is the base of the birth chart and why two people with the same planets but different lagnas get different readings.
Lagna, Sun Sign and Moon Sign: What Is the Difference
Western astrology leans on the Sun sign. Jyotish leans on the lagna and the Moon. The Sun stays in one sign for about 30 days, so millions share it. The Moon sign changes every two and a quarter days and shows the mind and emotional pattern. The lagna changes roughly every two hours and shows body, temperament and the house framework. How to Find Your Lagna From Date of Birth
You need three inputs: date, exact time and place of birth. The place gives latitude and longitude, and the time gives the sidereal time at that spot. Why the Lagna Changes Roughly Every Two Hours
The Earth turns 15 degrees every hour, so a 30 degree sign rises in about two hours on average. Signs do not rise for equal time, though. Depending on the sign and your latitude, a sign can take about one and a half to two and a half hours. That is why two people born on the same day in the same city can have different lagnas, and why two babies born an hour apart can still share one.
Lagna Degree and Birth Time Accuracy
The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes on average. A birth time error of ten minutes can shift the lagna degree by two or three degrees, and near a sign boundary it can change the lagna itself. Movable lagnas tend to start things, fixed lagnas sustain them, and dual lagnas adapt. These are tendencies of the sign, not fixed outcomes.
The Lagna Lord Is the Ruler of the Chart
The lagna lord is the planet that rules your rising sign. Parashara treats it as the key planet of the chart: when one strong lagna lord stands in a kendra it is said to remove all arishta, like Shiva destroying Tripura.[14] A lagna lord that is Mercury, Jupiter or Venus placed in a kendra or trikona is described as giving long life, wealth, intelligence and favour.[13] In our practice this means check the lagna lord first, and check its sign strength, house, aspects and dasha. Lagna Lord in the 1st to 4th House
Parashara gives short classical results for the lagna lord in each house. In the 1st house it gives bodily comfort and strong arms, with a thoughtful but restless mind.[1] In the 2nd house it gives gain, learning and a well-mannered nature.[2] In the 3rd house it gives courage like a lion and general prosperity.[3] In the 4th house it gives comfort from parents and good qualities.[4] These are the starting statements. Read them with the sign, aspects and dasha of that planet before drawing a conclusion.
Lagna Lord in the 5th to 8th House
In the 5th house the text speaks of moderate comfort from children, a proud and quick-tempered nature and favour from authority.[5] In the 6th house bodily comfort reduces and enemy trouble is mentioned when the lord is afflicted and has no benefic aspect.[6] In the 7th house with a malefic, the text warns of strain on the spouse, while a benefic gives travel, detachment or even kingship.[7] In the 8th house it gives skill in hidden subjects but also asks care about health and temper.[8] Heavy lines like these never stand alone. Lagna Lord in the 9th to 12th House

Movable, Fixed and Dual Lagna in Practice
Movable lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start projects, travel and change, fixed lagnas (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold on and build, and dual lagnas (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adjust and learn. A movable lagna lord in a movable sign with benefic aspect is described as giving fame and comfort.[15] Use this as colour for personality and not as a prediction on its own.
Yogakaraka Planet for Each Lagna
A yogakaraka rules both a kendra and a trikona, so it carries unusual strength. Saturn is the yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra lagna. Mars is the yogakaraka for Cancer and Leo lagna. Venus is the yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius lagna. Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces do not have a classic single yogakaraka. A planet is called functionally benefic or malefic by the houses it rules from your lagna. For example, Saturn is harsh for many lagnas but supportive for Taurus and Libra. Jyotish also reads the chart from the Moon as if it were the 1st house (Chandra lagna) and from the Sun (Surya lagna). Chandra lagna shows the mind and daily experience, Surya lagna shows vitality and status. When the lagna lord, the Moon and the Sun all point the same way, the reading is more certain. When they differ, the three views explain why one person feels a different life inside and outside.
Planets in the 1st House
Planets sitting in the lagna colour the body and the personality directly. A benefic like Jupiter softens and widens the nature. Common Mistakes When Finding or Reading the Lagna
The first mistake is using a tropical chart, which can give the previous sign. The second is using an approximate birth time near a sign boundary. The third is using the Sun sign as the lagna. The fourth is judging a planet by its general name instead of its role for your lagna. The fifth is buying a gemstone only from the lagna lord. Take a hypothetical Libra lagna. The lagna lord is Venus. Step one: note where Venus sits, say in the 10th house in Cancer. Step two: use the classical line for the lagna lord in the 10th, which speaks of honour in public life and self-earned wealth.[10] Step three: check the strength of Venus. Is it in a friendly sign, free from heavy affliction, and aspected by benefics? Step four: remember that Saturn is the yogakaraka for Libra lagna, so the dasha of Saturn deserves its own check. Lagna in Marriage and Relationships
The lagna shows you, and the 7th house from it shows the partner. So the lagna lord and the 7th lord are read together for compatibility of temperament. A lagna lord in the 7th with a malefic is a classical warning to examine the partner side carefully, while with a benefic it gives travel, detachment or even kingship.[7] Do not treat this as a yes or no. Why Your Vedic Lagna May Differ From a Western Chart
Western charts use the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the stars. The gap between them, the ayanamsa, is about 24 degrees today. So if your Western rising sign is early in a sign, your Vedic lagna is very likely the previous sign. This is not a mistake in either system. It is a different frame, and every rule in the classical texts was written for the sidereal one, so always use the sidereal lagna for any Jyotish reading.
