Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer

Your lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. To find it you need your date, exact time and place of birth; a sidereal calculator using Lahiri ayanamsha converts them into your rising sign and degree. Enter them in Trikaal Vaani's [Lagna Calculator](/calculators/free-lagna-calculator) for a free result in seconds.

Deep Dive Analysis

How to Find Your Lagna: The Short Answer

Finding your lagna takes three inputs and one calculation. The inputs are your birth date, the clock time you were born and the town you were born in. The calculation turns that moment into the point where the ecliptic crossed the eastern horizon, then names the zodiac sign of that point. Trikaal Vaani's free Lagna Calculator does the arithmetic with Swiss Ephemeris precision, so your only job is to feed it accurate inputs. The rest of this guide shows you how to make sure they are accurate.

What Is Your Lagna? A Quick Definition

Lagna is the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra puts it plainly: the rising of a sign is the lagna, and a native's results are judged from it together with the planets' conjunctions and separations.[1] Goladhyaya locates it as the point where the ecliptic meets the horizon: in the east it is the lagna, in the west the setting lagna (asta-lagna) and on the meridian the mid-lagna.[2] For what a lagna means for personality and life direction, read our concept page on the Lagna (Ascendant); this page is about finding it.

Lagna vs Moon Sign vs Sun Sign: Which One Do You Need?

Many people who search 'what is my lagna' actually hold their Moon sign (rashi) from a newspaper horoscope. The Moon sign needs only your date and an approximate time, because the Moon stays about two and a quarter days in one sign. The lagna needs your exact time and place, because it sweeps through all twelve signs every day. If you only know your rashi, find it with the free Rashi Calculator or read the Moon sign guide. If you want the sign that lays out your twelve houses, you need the lagna.

What You Need Before You Start: Date, Time and Place

Gather three facts before opening any calculator. Date: the calendar date on your birth certificate. Time: the exact minute, ideally from the hospital record or a parent's diary rather than from memory. Place: the town or city of birth, not the city where you grew up. If any of the three is uncertain, write down every version you have, because the next sections show how a small error can move your lagna. Our guide on birth time accuracy and rectification explains where family records usually go wrong.

Why Birth Time Matters More for Lagna Than Any Other Placement

The lagna sign changes roughly every two hours, and each degree of it takes about four minutes to rise, although the span varies by sign and latitude, between about one and a half and two and a half hours at most Indian latitudes. A ten-minute error therefore rarely changes the sign but can shift the lagna degree by two or three. That matters for the Navamsha (D9) chart, whose lagna changes about every thirteen minutes, and for house-level readings in your birth chart. The Sun's sign, by contrast, barely cares about the hour. This is why the lagna is the most time-sensitive point in a kundli.

Why Place of Birth Changes the Lagna

Place matters because the horizon is local. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says the lagna must be worked out from the rising times of the signs belonging to one's own place,[3] and Goladhyaya brings in the latitude (akshaja) and ayana terms when it gives the lagna correction.[4] Two babies born at the same clock minute in different cities can therefore have different lagnas. Local time shifts four minutes for every degree of longitude, and one degree is roughly 100 kilometres at Indian latitudes. Dwarka and Dibrugarh share Indian Standard Time yet differ by well over an hour and a half of sun time. Enter the actual town of birth and use the place search in the Lagna Calculator so the coordinates are exact.

How a Calculator Works Out Your Lagna in Five Moves

Every lagna calculator, ancient or modern, follows the same logic. First it fixes the true moment of birth in universal time. Second it works out how far the sky has turned, which is local sidereal time. Third it finds the ecliptic degree that is on the eastern horizon for your latitude. Fourth it converts that tropical degree into the sidereal zodiac by subtracting the ayanamsha. Fifth it reads off the sign, the degree inside the sign and the sign's ruling planet. The next four sections take these moves one by one, and the section after them shows how the classical ghati-and-table method reached the same answer by hand.

Step 1: Clock Time to Universal Time

Your birth certificate gives local clock time, but the sky does not run on clocks. The first job is to subtract the correct offset from Indian Standard Time, which is UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes, and to check whether another rule applied on your birth date. Calcutta and Bombay kept their own city clocks into the late 1940s and 1950s, and India used shifted clocks briefly during the Second World War and the 1962, 1965 and 1971 conflicts, as far as published time-zone records show. A good calculator carries a historical time-zone database and applies it for you. Check the offset it shows for your birth date; if it differs from what your family papers suggest, resolve that before trusting the chart.

Step 2: Sidereal Time and the Eastern Horizon

Once the moment is fixed in universal time, the software finds the Julian day number and from it the sidereal time at Greenwich, then adds your longitude to get local sidereal time. That tells it which point of the sky is crossing your meridian. With your latitude and the tilt of the ecliptic, about 23.4 degrees, it solves for the ecliptic point that is rising in the east. That point is the lagna in the sense Goladhyaya describes.[2] Swiss Ephemeris, the library behind Trikaal Vaani's calculators, performs this to arc-second level, which is far finer than any birth record can support.

Step 3: Subtracting the Ayanamsha for the Sidereal Zodiac

The degree from step 2 is tropical, measured from the spring equinox point. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars, so the calculator subtracts the ayanamsha, the slow drift between the two. Grahaganita's lagna rule has the same shape: it carries an ayanamsha reduction and then splits the result in proportion to the sign's own rising time.[5] In 2026 the Lahiri ayanamsha is a little over 24 degrees, so a tropical rising degree of Gemini 10 becomes Taurus 16 in the sidereal chart. That single subtraction explains why many people have a different Vedic lagna from the rising sign shown by Western apps.

Step 4: From Degree to Sign and Lagna Lord

Divide the sidereal degree by 30 to get the sign: 0 to 30 is Mesha (Aries), 30 to 60 is Vrishabha, and so on through Meena. The remainder is the degree inside that sign. Then name the ruler, which becomes your lagna lord: Mars for Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus for Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury for Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon for Karka, the Sun for Simha, Jupiter for Dhanu and Meena, Saturn for Makara and Kumbha. Keep the degree as well as the sign. A lagna at 29 degrees is almost in the next sign, and one at 0 degrees has just entered it, which is where the sandhi cases below come from. The full list of signs is in our guide to the 12 rashis.

How the Classical Method Worked: Ishta Kala and Rising Times

Before computers, astrologers took the time from sunrise to birth (ishta kala), measured in ghatis, and set it against a table of rising times for the sign the Sun occupied and the signs after it. Goladhyaya notes that if the ishta ghatis are in civil (savana) units they must first be converted into sidereal units using the Sun at that moment, and only then matched against the rising times.[6] Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra insists that those rising times be the ones for one's own place.[3] The method is sound, but every step leaves room for arithmetic slips, which is why an ephemeris-based tool is both faster and safer. To see how the lagna then feeds the whole chart, read how a kundli works.

Tropical vs Sidereal: Why Your Western Rising Sign Differs

About four in five people find that their Vedic lagna sign differs from the tropical rising sign. The reason is arithmetic: with an ayanamsha of about 24 degrees, any tropical rising degree below 24 falls back into the previous sign, while degrees from 24 to 30 stay in the same sign. So a Western 'Gemini rising' is most often Taurus lagna in Jyotish. Neither answer is a mistake; they are two different zodiacs. Parashari practice, which Trikaal Vaani follows, reads the sidereal one. If you want to see where your Sun, Moon and rising signs fall in each system, compare them with your Nakshatra and Moon position.

Lahiri Ayanamsha: The Default for Vedic Lagna

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha follows the Indian Calendar Reform Committee's standard and is the default in most Parashari software. It is a little over 24 degrees in 2026 and grows by about 50 arc-seconds a year. Other schools use slightly different values; Raman and KP ayanamshas differ from Lahiri by anything from a few arc-minutes to roughly a degree and a half. Because one degree of lagna is about four minutes of time, that difference matters only when your lagna degree sits near a sign boundary. Trikaal Vaani uses Lahiri throughout so your birth chart, Nakshatra and dasha results always agree with each other.

Time-Zone, Daylight-Saving and AM/PM Errors

Most wrong lagnas come from the clock, not from astrology. If you were born abroad, the zone and daylight-saving rule of that city and date apply, not IST: a baby born in London in July 1990 was on British Summer Time, UTC+1, and entering plain GMT shifts the lagna by an hour. A 12:30 AM birth belongs to the new calendar date, not the previous evening. Mixing 12-hour and 24-hour entries turns 7:15 PM into 7:15 AM and gives a completely different lagna. All of these are fixable: re-run the calculation with the corrected zone, date or meridiem, and compare the result with the one in your birth time accuracy checklist.

Lagna Sandhi: Born Near a Sign Boundary

Lagna sandhi means your lagna degree sits within about one degree of a sign boundary, which is roughly four minutes of time on either side. In that window a tiny time error changes your lagna sign and therefore every house in the chart. Garga Hora lists the end of a lagna alongside the end of a tithi and the end of the day as junction moments and calls such births different (anya-jata), a signal to treat them carefully.[7] The way out is a method, not a verdict: run the chart at a few nearby minutes and keep the lagna whose house positions fit your known life events and dasha history. If both fit, ask for a proper rectification rather than guessing, which you can book through a Vedic consultation.

The Three-Time Test: Check Your Lagna at Minus 10, Exact and Plus 10

A quick way to see whether your lagna is fragile is to run the calculator three times: at your recorded time, ten minutes earlier and ten minutes later. If all three runs give the same sign, your lagna is stable and a small record error will not hurt. If the sign changes, you are in a sandhi or near-sandhi case and should treat the lagna as provisional until you verify the time. Note the lagna degree each time, since a degree that moves from 29 to 0 is the clearest warning. Use the free Lagna Calculator for all three runs so the ayanamsha and place stay identical.

How Signs Rise: Head-First, Back-First and Both

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra classifies signs by how they rise: Mesha is back-first (prishthodayi),[8] Mithuna is head-first (shirshodayi),[9] and Meena rises both ways (ubhayodayi).[10] Modern calculators do not need this classification, because they use exact geometry, but it shows that classical astrologers tracked the rising sign as an event with direction and duration. It also explains why signs do not occupy equal clock time on the horizon. The rising sign then becomes the first house and every other house is counted from it; the 12 houses guide shows how that layout works.

Special Lagnas Are Not Your Birth Lagna

Some results show a lagna different from yours because they are showing a special lagna. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra defines bhava-lagna, which advances one sign for every five ghatis counted from sunrise,[11] hora-lagna, which advances faster, at a sign for every two and a half ghatis,[12] and ghati-lagna, which moves a sign for each ghati.[13] These are separate points used for specific questions such as status or wealth. They do not replace the janma lagna, the rising sign at the moment of birth, which is what the calculator returns and what you use to read houses. If you are comparing two outputs, check which lagna each one means, then continue with how to read a kundali step by step.

Checking Your Lagna by Physical Traits: A Sanity Test Only

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says body, form, knowledge, complexion, strength and nature are judged from the lagna house.[14] It also says a benefic in the lagna gives good form while a malefic there leaves it without good form, and that benefic conjunction or aspect on the lagna gives bodily comfort.[15] That is why appearance is a weak check: planets in or aspecting the lagna modify the sign's look, so a mismatch proves nothing. Use traits only as a sanity test, never as the deciding evidence. If your calculated lagna feels completely foreign, re-check the time and place instead of changing the lagna to match your face. Our planets guide and graha primer show how planets colour a lagna.

Your Lagna Lord: The First Thing to Read Once You Know Your Lagna

After the sign, read its lord. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says the lagna lord joined with malefics in the 6th, 8th or 12th takes bodily comfort away, while the same lord in a kendra or trikona grants it,[16] and that a combust, debilitated or enemy-sign lagna lord becomes a cause of disease while benefics in kendra or trikona remove it.[17] The text adds that the lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in a kendra or trikona gives long life, wealth and intelligence.[18] So a weak lagna lord is a pointer for focus, not a sentence: see its Lagna Bal, read the Lagna Bal guide, and learn the Shadbala system behind the score.

Is Your Lagna Lord Weak? Check Dignity and Combustion First

Before you worry, test the lagna lord properly. A planet that is combust (too close to the Sun) loses visible strength, as explained in the combustion guide, and one in debilitation or an enemy sign needs the dignity check described in exaltation and debilitation. Neutral dignity, a benefic aspect or placement in a kendra or trikona often balances a modest score. Run the Weak Planet Finder for a single clear verdict on which planets in your chart are actually weak, and compare it with the lagna lord's strength on your own chart, not with a generic list.

A 5-Line Upay If Your Lagna Lord Turns Out Weak

What: on your lagna lord's weekday, do its simple act. Sun: offer a lota of water to the rising Sun. Moon: offer plain water at a Shiva temple. Mars: offer jaggery at a Hanuman temple. Mercury: feed green moong or greens to a cow. Jupiter: feed chana dal to a cow. Venus: offer sweets worth Rs 10 to a child or at a temple. Saturn: light a mustard-oil lamp under a peepal tree at dusk. When: that planet's weekday (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday), within one hour after sunrise; for Saturn, at dusk. Cost: free to Rs 20. How many days: 11 weeks, that is 11 sittings on that weekday. Why for you: your lagna lord carries your body and vitality, so steadying it first supports everything else in the chart. This is a traditional practice, not a classical verse, and no gemstone is part of it; consider a stone only after a full chart reading says it suits you, using the Gemstone Suitability Calculator.

What If You Do Not Know Your Birth Time?

You can still do a lot. First, ask relatives for any record: school forms, baptism or hospital papers, an old horoscope, even a photo timestamp. Second, use the Moon-based tools that tolerate a few hours of error: your Moon sign and Nakshatra, your Sade Sati status and a first look at your Mahadasha periods. Be honest about the limit: the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so each hour of error can shift Mahadasha start dates by roughly three to ten months, depending on the planet. Treat any dasha date as approximate until the time is confirmed.

Birth-Time Rectification Basics

Rectification (janma samay shodhan) means testing candidate birth times against what actually happened in a life. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra tells the student to correct the birth lagna first before moving to further checks.[19] A careful reader lists dated events such as education, first job, marriage, children and major losses, builds charts for a window of possible times, and keeps the lagna whose dasha periods and house placements explain those events best. The Navamsha lagna is checked as well. This is slow work that depends on reliable event dates, so do not accept a one-line answer. Read our birth time accuracy guide first, and if the case is stubborn, consider a kundli reading with a human astrologer.

A 7-Day Birth-Time Verification Routine (5-Line Upay)

What: write down every birth-time source you can find (certificate, hospital slip, mother's memory, old horoscope) and run each through the calculator. When: start this Sunday at 10 AM and give 15 minutes each morning, at the same hour. Cost: free. How many days: 7 days, then stop and compare. Why for you: a wrong lagna would also make dashas, houses and any remedy wrong, so a week of checking protects everything later. If all sources give the same lagna, you are done; if they differ, note which sign each gives and bring that short list to your reading, along with a few dated life events. The Lagna Calculator can be re-run as often as you like.

How Accurate Is a Free Lagna Calculator?

A free calculator is exactly as accurate as its engine and its inputs. The astronomy is the easy part: a Swiss Ephemeris engine gets the rising degree right to far finer than a minute of arc. What varies between tools is the default ayanamsha, the time-zone database and how they treat missing seconds or unknown places. If two tools disagree, compare the ayanamsha first, then the time zone, then the place coordinates. Our note on whether free kundli software is reliable explains where tools differ, and the Kundali Strength Calculator shows what to read once the lagna is settled.

Common Mistakes When People Look Up Their Lagna

The usual errors are simple. Using the Moon sign from a newspaper as the lagna. Using the tropical rising sign from a Western app. Using the time of hospital admission instead of the time of birth. Entering the current city instead of the birth town. Forgetting that the lagna changes with the minute, so a rounded 'around 6 o'clock' can be a different sign from 6:25. Each has a cure: take the time of first breath from the best record, use the birth town, choose the sidereal Lahiri setting, and run the three-time test described above. If your result still looks odd, compare it with the Lagna Bal Calculator output, which uses the same lagna.

After You Find Your Lagna: Where to Go Next

Once the lagna is confirmed, the next reading steps follow a clear order. Learn what each house means in the houses guide, then see how your planets are placed using the Graha Bal Calculator. Check body and vitality signals with the Health Prediction Calculator, look for Mars placement with the Manglik Dosh Calculator, and understand timing through Mahadasha explained. For doshas in general, the dosh guide shows each one with its remedy. And if you want your whole chart, start with the Janam Kundali guide.

Classical Sources for Lagna and Its Computation

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the definition of lagna as a rising sign,[1] the local rising-time rule,[3] the head-first and back-first classification of signs,[8][9][10] the special lagnas,[11][12][13] the lagna house's reach over body and nature,[14][15] the lagna-lord rules,[16][17][18] and the instruction to correct the birth lagna first.[19] Goladhyaya adds the geometric definition, the savana-to-sidereal conversion and the latitude term,[2][4][6] Grahaganita the ayanamsha-reduced proportional rule,[5] and Garga Hora the sandhi caution.[7] Every verse is cited by number and meaning. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my lagna from my date of birth? (Mera lagna kya hai)

You need your date, exact time and place of birth. A sidereal calculator converts them to the rising degree on the eastern horizon, subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsha and names the sign. Enter your details in the [free Lagna Calculator](/calculators/free-lagna-calculator) for the sign, degree and lagna lord.

Can I find my lagna without my birth time?

Not exactly, because the lagna changes sign about every two hours. You can use Moon-based tools such as [Nakshatra](/calculators/free-nakshatra-calculator) and Moon sign, or ask a practitioner for rectification from dated life events. Treat any lagna guess as provisional.

Is there a free ascendant calculator for Vedic astrology?

Yes. Trikaal Vaani's [Lagna Calculator](/calculators/free-lagna-calculator) is free, uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsha and Swiss Ephemeris precision, and needs only your date, time and place of birth.

Why does my lagna differ from the rising sign on Western sites?

Western sites use the tropical zodiac and Vedic ones the sidereal. With an ayanamsha of about 24 degrees, roughly four in five people get a different sign, usually the previous one. Both are correct in their own system.

How accurate must my birth time be to find my lagna?

Within a few minutes is ideal, and within ten minutes is usually enough to hold the sign unless you are near a sign boundary. Run the calculator at minus ten, exact and plus ten minutes to see whether your lagna is stable.

Does place of birth change my lagna?

Yes. The horizon is local, so latitude and longitude change which degree is rising. Two births at the same clock minute in different towns can have different lagnas, so enter the actual town of birth.

How do I calculate my lagna manually?

Convert birth time to universal time, find local sidereal time, solve for the ecliptic point on the eastern horizon for your latitude, subtract the ayanamsha and divide by 30 to get the sign. The classical route uses ishta ghatis from sunrise and rising-time tables.

What is lagna sandhi and should I worry?

Lagna sandhi means your lagna degree lies within about one degree of a sign boundary. It is not a defect; it only means a small time error can change the sign. Verify your birth time and, if needed, ask for rectification.

Does my lagna change during life?

No. The janma lagna is fixed by the birth moment. Only your understanding of it can change if the birth time is corrected. Transit and special lagnas are different points used for other questions.

How can I check my lagna lord strength?

After finding your lagna, note its ruling planet and test its sign dignity, house, combustion and Shadbala. The [Lagna Bal Calculator](/calculators/free-lagna-bal-calculator) gives a lagna-lord strength score, and a weak score points to where simple remedies should focus.
