How to Find a Weak Planet in Your Kundli
Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer
To find a weak planet in your kundli, test each of the nine grahas on six points: sign dignity (neecha or shatru rashi), combustion (asta), planetary war, house placement with dusthana lordship, Shadbala total, and the running dasha. The free [Weak Planet Finder](/calculators/free-weak-planet-finder) does all six from your birth details.
Deep Dive Analysis
How to Find a Weak Planet in Your Kundli: The Short Answer
A weak planet is a graha whose result is held back in your chart, not a 'bad' planet and not a curse. To find one, test each of the nine grahas on six points: sign dignity, combustion, planetary war, house placement with dusthana lordship, Shadbala total and the dasha now running. Trikaal Vaani's free Weak Planet Finder runs all six from your date, time and place of birth in seconds. The sections below explain every check in plain language, so you can read the result yourself and know which planet needs attention first.
Which Planet Is Weak in My Kundli? Start With a Correct Chart
Every test below depends on three facts: your rising sign, each planet's exact degree and the house it falls in. A birth time that is wrong by a few minutes shifts the Lagna degree, and an error of an hour or two can change the rising sign and every house lordship with it. Create the chart with the free Janam Kundali calculator, confirm the rising sign using the free Lagna calculator, and if the time is only a guess read birth time accuracy and rectification first. If chart reading is new to you, how to read a kundali step by step and how a kundli works give the basic layout. Only then start the checks.
Step 1: Check Sign Dignity — Exaltation and Debilitation (Neecha)
The first test is the sign each planet occupies. BPHS names the exaltation (uchcha) signs as Aries for the Sun, Taurus for the Moon, Capricorn for Mars, Virgo for Mercury, Cancer for Jupiter, Pisces for Venus and Libra for Saturn.[1] The seventh sign from each exaltation sign, at the same degree, is the debilitation (neecha) point, so the Sun is weakest in Libra, deepest at 10 degrees, and Saturn in Aries, deepest at 20 degrees.[2] Shadbala itself measures Uchcha Bala as a planet's distance from its debilitation point.[31] A neecha planet is the first suspect, not a verdict: the rescue rules in the neecha-bhanga section often change the outcome. The ten steps below group into the six checks above: sign (steps 1 to 3), combustion (4), planetary war (6), house and direction strength (7), Shadbala (8), dusthana lordship (9) and dasha (10); step 5 shows why retrograde is not a weakness. The planetary dignity guide lists all nine grahas, and the free Rashi calculator shows your Moon sign for the Moon check.
Step 2: Own Sign and Moolatrikona — Where a Planet Feels at Home
A planet in its own sign or moolatrikona stands at the other end of the scale. BPHS gives the Sun's moolatrikona as the first 20 degrees of Leo, with the rest of Leo as its own sign.[3] Such planets rarely count as weak on sign alone, but check the other five points anyway: a planet at home can still be combust, defeated in a planetary war or ruling a dusthana. Treat sign dignity as the foundation and the rest as modifiers. For the full list of own signs, the planets in astrology guide and the nine planets in kundali guide cover each graha in turn.
Step 3: Friend or Enemy Sign (Shatru Rashi) — Planetary Friendship
A planet's comfort in a sign depends on whether the sign lord is its friend. BPHS adds temporary friendship, where planets placed in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from each other become friends and the rest enemies,[4] to natural friendship. A friend in both ways becomes an intimate friend (adhimitra), and a friend plus a neutral stays a friend, as an enemy plus a neutral stays an enemy.[5] A friend plus an enemy becomes neutral, and an enemy in both ways becomes a great enemy (adhishatru).[6] A planet in an enemy sign is a mild suspect, much lighter than neecha. If the same planet is vargottama, meaning the same sign in the birth chart and navamsa,[30] or well placed in the navamsa chart, Trikaal Vaani reads the enemy-sign weakness as softened.
What Each Dignity Gives: Full, Three-Quarter, Half or Nil
BPHS grades results by dignity: full results in the exaltation sign, three-quarters in moolatrikona, half in an own sign and a quarter in a friend's sign.[7] In a debilitation sign, when combust, or in an enemy sign, the next verse gives nil.[8] Read 'nil' as 'this planet's own themes show little by themselves', not as ruin. Phaladipika names the states: deepta in exaltation, sukhita in a trikona, swastha at home and mudita in a friend's sign.[25] The weak states are pidita when overpowered, dukhita in an enemy's house, bhita when debilitated and vikala when combust.[26] The best state gives full results and the vikala none.[27] Rescue rules and a supportive dasha can still lift a planet from that floor; the Shadbala guide covers the numeric side.
Step 4: Combustion (Asta) — A Planet Too Close to the Sun
A planet within a few degrees of the Sun is asta, combust, its own light lost in the Sun's glare. BPHS puts combustion with debilitation and enemy signs in the nil group,[8] and Phaladipika calls the combust planet vikala, the incomplete one.[26] Commonly used limits are Moon 12 degrees, Mars 17, Mercury 14 (12 when retrograde), Jupiter 11, Venus 10 (8 when retrograde) and Saturn 15; the combustion guide lists them by planet. Mercury and Venus travel close to the Sun, so combustion alone is common and not alarming, and the closer the planet is to the Sun's degree, the stronger the effect. The free Graha Bal calculator flags it for every planet. A Sun-Mercury pair is often combust yet still forms Budhaditya Yoga.
Exalted and Combust Together: Capacity Full, Not Visible
When one planet is exalted and combust at the same time, calling it strong or weak is wrong either way. Trikaal Vaani reads it as a separate status: capacity full, but not visible. It happens with Mercury in Virgo near the Sun, Venus in Pisces near the Sun, the Moon in Taurus around the new moon, and similar cases. The classical texts pull in two directions here, because BPHS gives full results for exaltation[7] while the same verse group places combustion in the nil group.[8] The pattern to test against your own history is steady ability whose result or credit arrives late or smaller than the effort. Free routine — Do: face the sunrise for two minutes and say aloud the one task you want seen this week. When: Sunday at local sunrise, about 6:30 am. Cost: free. Days: 7 Sundays. Why for you: the capacity is intact and only the Sun's glare hides it, so the work is about visibility.
Step 5: Is a Retrograde (Vakri) Planet Weak? No
Retrograde is the most misunderstood word in kundli reading. BPHS lists eight kinds of planetary motion[13] and gives a retrograde planet the full 60 units of motional strength, Cheshta Bala.[14] Phaladipika likewise counts retrogression, along with debilitation, among conditions in which planets can still produce a kingly result in a raja yoga.[29] So a vakri planet is not weak by that fact alone; Trikaal Vaani reads it as a planet that works inwardly, repeats its lessons and delivers late but strongly. The nodes Rahu and Ketu are judged differently, as shown below. For the sky as it moves now, see Mercury retrograde in 2026, which is about transit, not your natal strength.
Step 6: Planetary War (Graha Yuddha) — The Planet That Loses
When two true planets stand very close in degree, classically within one degree, they are in graha yuddha, planetary war. BPHS says the difference in strength is added to the winner and subtracted from the loser.[12] The loser is your weak planet for that chart even if its sign is friendly, and Phaladipika calls an overpowered planet pidita.[26] The loss is relative, though: a loser with strong direction and position keeps usable strength, which is why the Shadbala guide matters more than a single yes-or-no label. Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn take part in this contest, not the Sun, Moon or nodes.
Step 7: House, Direction and Time Strength (Dig Bala and Kala Bala)
Direction and time add a second layer. BPHS gives directional strength to Mercury and Jupiter in the east, the Sun and Mars in the south, Saturn in the west and the Moon and Venus in the north,[9] which in house terms means the 1st, 10th, 7th and 4th. It says the Moon, Mars and Saturn are strong at night, Mercury always, and the rest by day,[10] and that malefics gain strength in the dark half of the month while benefics gain in the bright half.[11] So a Jupiter in the 7th or a Saturn in the 1st scores lowest on direction even in a friendly sign. Read this with the 12 houses guide, the houses in astrology page, and Marana Karaka Sthana, another house-based weakness test.
Step 8: Shadbala — The Six-Fold Strength Score
Shadbala is the numeric test. BPHS Chapter 27 names six strengths: position (sthana), direction (dig), time (kala), aspect (drik), motion (cheshta) and natural strength (naisargika).[15] Each planet has a stated minimum total, and a planet that reaches it counts as strong,[16] and Trikaal Vaani reads one that falls short as weak. Modern tools express this as a ratio of achieved to required strength: below 1.0 is weak and above 1.0 is strong. Shadbala is calculated for the seven visible planets, so Rahu and Ketu are judged through their sign lords. The Shadbala guide, the Shadbala learn page, the free Graha Bal calculator and the free Kundali Strength calculator show the numbers for your chart.
Step 9: Dusthana Lordship — Planets That Rule the 6th, 8th and 12th
A planet's job in your chart also depends on the houses it rules from your Lagna. BPHS says the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses give malefic results.[24] The 6th, 8th and 12th lords are the dusthana lords, so a planet that rules them can feel difficult even when it is strong. The same text gives relief: a debilitated dusthana lord that aspects the Lagna can still make a raja yoga,[23] and an exalted or own-sign Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna gives rulership even when the 6th, 8th and 12th lords are debilitated or in enemy signs.[22] See functional benefic and malefic planets for how this changes by Lagna, Vipreet Raj Yoga for the dusthana-lord rescue pattern, and weak house lord remedies for house-by-house remedies.
Step 10: The Dasha Check — When a Weak Planet Actually Speaks
A weak planet stays quiet until its Mahadasha or Antardasha. BPHS Chapter 28 on Ishta and Kashta says these strengths decide the good or bad results a planet gives in its dasha,[18] and that the greater of the two, ishta or kashta, wins.[19] So a weak planet whose dasha is far away asks for awareness, not worry, while a weak planet whose dasha is running deserves the remedies below first. Find your running period with the free Dasha calculator, read Mahadasha explained for the system, and see how to calculate Vimshottari dasha for the working.
Weak Sun in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
A Sun is a candidate for weakness when it sits in Libra, deepest at 10 degrees,[2] in an enemy sign such as Taurus, Capricorn or Aquarius, in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or with a low Shadbala ratio. Its natural friends are the Moon, Mars and Jupiter. The Sun stands for confidence, vitality, the father and authority, so a weak Sun may show as hesitation about taking the lead; compare this with your own life rather than treating it as a prediction. A neecha Sun whose rescue conditions are met can still perform well. The Surya Mahadasha and government job guide covers its dasha. Remedy — Do: offer a small cup of water to the rising Sun and say 'Om Suryaya Namah' 12 times. When: Sunday at local sunrise. Cost: free. Days: 12 Sundays. Why for you: it builds the Sun's themes of confidence and routine, useful when your Sun scores low.
Weak Moon in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
The Moon is weak when debilitated in Scorpio, deepest at 3 degrees,[2] when it is waning and close to the Sun near the new moon, or when its Shadbala ratio is low; it has no natural enemies, so enemy-sign weakness rarely applies. BPHS notes that benefics gain strength in the bright half of the month,[11] and the Moon's own time strength rises as it waxes. The Moon governs the mind, sleep, the mother and emotional steadiness; a weak Moon is a reason for steady routine, not a medical statement, so see a doctor for any health concern. The Moon sign guide and the Chandra Mahadasha guide cover what follows. Remedy — Do: sit quietly for ten minutes by a window facing the evening sky and repeat 'Om Somaya Namah' 11 times. When: Monday at 8:00 pm. Cost: free. Days: 9 Mondays. Why for you: it calms the Moon's themes of mind and sleep, helpful when your Moon is debilitated, waning or low in Shadbala.
Weak Mars in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
Mars is weak when debilitated in Cancer, deepest at 28 degrees,[2] when it sits in Mercury's signs Gemini or Virgo, when it is defeated in a planetary war, or when its Shadbala ratio is low. Its natural friends are the Sun, Moon and Jupiter, and Mercury is its enemy. Mars stands for energy, courage, siblings and property, so a weak Mars is a prompt to check stamina and decision-making habits in your own life. A weak Mars is not the same as Manglik Dosh, which depends on Mars's house; check that separately with the free Manglik Dosh calculator. The Mangal Mahadasha guide covers its dasha. Remedy — Do: read the Hanuman Chalisa once, about 8 minutes. When: Tuesday at 7:00 am. Cost: free. Days: 9 Tuesdays. Why for you: it channels Mars energy into steady discipline, which a low-scoring Mars lacks.
Weak Mercury in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
Mercury is weak when debilitated in Pisces, deepest at 15 degrees, the same degree as its Virgo exaltation,[2] when it sits in Cancer, the Moon's sign, or when it is combust, which is common. Its natural friends are the Sun and Venus, and the Moon is its enemy. Mercury stands for speech, analysis, trade and learning, so a weak Mercury often shows as a gap between what you know and how you express it. A combust Mercury beside a well-placed Sun is frequently still productive. The Budh Mahadasha and career guide covers its dasha. Remedy — Do: give a handful of green moong or green fodder to a cow or to birds. When: Wednesday at 9:00 am. Cost: ₹10 to ₹20. Days: 7 Wednesdays. Why for you: it practises Mercury's theme of sharing, fitting a chart where Mercury is combust, debilitated or low in Shadbala.
Weak Jupiter in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
Jupiter is weak when debilitated in Capricorn, deepest at 5 degrees,[2] in the signs of its enemies Mercury or Venus such as Gemini, Virgo, Taurus or Libra, or with a low Shadbala; the Sun, Moon and Mars are its friends. Jupiter stands for wisdom, guidance, children and the growth of money. A weak Jupiter is not 'no luck': a debilitated Jupiter can be rescued when the lord of Capricorn and the lord of its exaltation sign both stand in kendra from the Lagna or Moon,[28] as the rescue section explains. The Guru Mahadasha guide and the Gaj Kesari Yoga page show what a supported Jupiter looks like. Remedy — Do: greet a teacher or elder respectfully and offer yellow sweets or chana dal worth ₹20. When: Thursday at 7:30 am. Cost: ₹20. Days: 11 Thursdays. Why for you: Jupiter's themes are guidance and gratitude, which a low-scoring Jupiter needs repeated.
Weak Venus in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
Venus is weak when debilitated in Virgo, deepest at 27 degrees,[2] in the Sun's or Moon's signs Leo and Cancer, when combust, or with a low Shadbala; Mercury and Saturn are its friends. Venus stands for relationships, comfort, art, vehicles and the flow of money. A weak Venus is a prompt to look at how you give and receive affection and manage comforts, not a verdict on marriage; the marriage combinations guide and the Shukra Antardasha guide show the wider picture. Remedy — Do: offer white flowers or rice worth ₹10 at a temple, or give a meal to a woman in need. When: Friday at 8:00 am. Cost: ₹10 to ₹20. Days: 9 Fridays. Why for you: it practises Venus's themes of care and generosity, supporting a chart where Venus is weak by sign, combustion or score.
Weak Saturn in Kundli: Signs and a Simple Routine
Saturn is weak when debilitated in Aries, deepest at 20 degrees,[2] in the signs of its enemies the Sun, Moon and Mars such as Leo, Cancer or Scorpio, or with low Shadbala; Mercury and Venus are its friends. Saturn stands for discipline, delay, work and service, so a weak Saturn often looks like difficulty sustaining routine or staying with slow results. Natal weakness is separate from transit Sade Sati, which you can check with the free Sade Sati calculator. The Shani Mahadasha guide and the Saturn in Aries neecha analysis explain rescue cases in detail. Remedy — Do: light one sesame-oil lamp at a peepal tree or at home. When: Saturday at 6:30 pm. Cost: ₹10 to ₹20. Days: 11 Saturdays. Why for you: it builds Saturn's patient routine, which a low-scoring or debilitated Saturn needs.
Weak Rahu in Kundli: How to Judge a Shadow Planet
The BPHS exaltation verse names seven planets only,[1] and Shadbala is not calculated for Rahu, so its strength is judged through its sign lord, house, conjunctions and nakshatra. A Rahu is hard to place when its dispositor is weak, combust or a dusthana lord, because the node then has no steady channel for its energy. Rahu stands for ambition, foreign contact and sudden turns; the what is Rahu guide and the Rahu Mahadasha guide explain how its dasha behaves. Remedy — Do: give one roti or biscuit to a stray dog. When: Saturday at 5:30 pm. Cost: free to ₹10. Days: 8 Saturdays. Why for you: it eases Rahu's restlessness through a small, steady act of service when its dispositor is weak.
Weak Ketu in Kundli: Reading the Other Node
Ketu is judged the same way as Rahu: through its dispositor, house and nakshatra rather than Shadbala. A Ketu looks weak when its sign lord is combust or in a dusthana, or when its detachment sits uneasily with money and partnership questions in the 2nd or 7th house. Ketu stands for detachment, intuition and endings; the what is Ketu guide and the Ketu Mahadasha guide cover its dasha. Remedy — Do: light a ghee lamp for two minutes in front of a Ganesh image. When: Tuesday at 6:00 pm. Cost: ₹10 to ₹20. Days: 9 Tuesdays. Why for you: it steadies Ketu's detachment into a calm daily habit when its dispositor is weak.
Neecha-Bhanga: When a Debilitated Planet Is Rescued
Neecha-bhanga means cancellation of debilitation. Phaladipika states that when a planet is debilitated at birth, and both the lord of its sign and the lord of its exaltation sign stand in kendra from the Lagna or Moon, the native can rise to a high, kingly standing.[28] The same text counts even a debilitated or retrograde planet among those that can still produce a raja yoga.[29] BPHS adds that a debilitated 6th, 8th or 12th lord aspecting the Lagna also forms a raja yoga.[23] So test a neecha planet for cancellation before calling it weak; the Neech Bhang Raj Yoga guide and the Saturn in Aries analysis walk through live examples. Cancellation reduces the weakness; it does not make the planet identical to an exalted one, and its dasha still deserves attention.
A Weak Planet Inside a Yoga: How to Spot and Repair It
A weak planet matters most when it belongs to a yoga. BPHS says yogas born from a combust, war-defeated, debilitated or otherwise weak planet turn out yoga-destroying.[20] It also says the strongest planet among those forming a yoga is the one that delivers the result.[17] That is why two charts with the same raja yoga can behave differently: in one the yoga planets are strong, in the other a weak planet leaves the yoga on paper. The repair is the same checks above: look for cancellation, a supportive dasha and, if one planet is the bottleneck, the free routine for that planet. See Raj Yoga and how to find rajyog in a kundali for spotting the yogas first.
Weak Lagna Lord: The First Planet to Check
Check the Lagna lord first, because it carries the whole chart. BPHS says a combust, debilitated or enemy-sign Lagna lord can become disease-causing, while benefics in a kendra or trikona remove all disease.[21] This is a classical observation about vitality, not a medical diagnosis. The Lagna Bal guide and the free Lagna Bal calculator score it, the ascendant guide explains the sign, and the Vedic health astrology guide places it in context. If the Lagna lord is weak, start with that planet's routine above, since it supports every house.
Check the Nakshatra Lord Too
Each planet also sits in a nakshatra, and the lord of that nakshatra colours how the planet delivers results. A planet that looks fine by sign can still act weakly if its nakshatra lord is combust, debilitated or a dusthana lord. Look up your planets' nakshatras with the free Nakshatra calculator, read the nakshatra calculator guide for the method and the 27 nakshatra guide for each lord. This is a refinement layer, so use it after the six main checks, not instead of them.
Does a Weak Planet Need a Gemstone? Remedy Order
A weak planet is not automatically a gemstone case. A gem strengthens a planet, so the wrong stone for a planet that is unhelpful for your Lagna can add trouble instead of removing it. Follow this order: first understand the weakness, then try the free routine for 7 to 12 weeks, then check the dasha timing, and consider a gemstone only after confirming suitability and only if you ask for it. The free Gemstone Suitability calculator checks fit, strong planets do not need gemstones explains the common mistake, and why the wrong gemstone can harm you lists the risks. The gemstone guide covers all nine planets.
Weak Planet Myths: Five Worries That Are Not Facts
Five myths cause most worry about weak planets. Myth: neecha means a ruined planet. Fact: cancellation rules can lift it,[28] and BPHS shows debilitated dusthana lords making raja yogas.[23] Myth: retrograde means weak. Fact: BPHS gives it full motional strength.[14] Myth: combust always means harm. Fact: it is a matter of degree, and many charts carry a combust Mercury. Myth: one weak planet means a weak life. Fact: a chart has nine grahas, and the strongest planet in a yoga delivers the result.[17] Myth: you must buy a stone. Fact: free routines come first. For the wider picture of doshas, read the dosh in kundli guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which planet is weak in my kundli?
Test each of the nine grahas on six points: sign dignity (debilitation or enemy sign), combustion, planetary war, house placement with dusthana lordship, Shadbala total and the running dasha. The [free Weak Planet Finder](/calculators/free-weak-planet-finder) runs all six from your birth details.
Which planet is weak in my kundli, and can a calculator tell me?
A calculator can mark every planet that is debilitated, combust, defeated in war or low in Shadbala. Which weakness matters most depends on your Lagna and the running dasha, so use the result as a starting list and then read the house lordships.
Is a debilitated (neecha) planet always weak?
No. BPHS gives nil results to a debilitated planet standing alone, but Phaladipika's neecha-bhanga rule can cancel the weakness when the lord of its sign and the lord of its exaltation sign both stand in kendra from the Lagna or Moon. Test for cancellation before calling it weak.
Is a retrograde planet weak?
No. BPHS gives a retrograde planet the full 60 units of motional strength (Cheshta Bala), so retrogression is not a weakness by itself. Judge such a planet by its sign, house and Shadbala like any other.
How do I know if Saturn is strong or weak in my kundli?
Saturn is strong in Libra (exalted) or its own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, in the 7th house for direction, and with a Shadbala ratio above 1. It is weak in Aries, in the signs of the Sun, Moon and Mars, in the 1st house for direction, or when combust or defeated in war. Check for neecha-bhanga too.
What does a combust (asta) planet mean?
A planet within a few degrees of the Sun loses visible strength. BPHS places combustion with debilitation and enemy signs in the nil group, but the effect grows with closeness, and combust Mercury is common. See the [combustion guide](/learn/combustion-planets-vedic-astrology) for the limits.
Who is the weakest planet in a horoscope?
There is no universally weakest planet. The weakest planet is the one that scores lowest on the six checks in your own chart, often the one with the lowest Shadbala ratio. The [free Graha Bal calculator](/calculators/free-graha-bal-calculator) shows the ratio for each planet.
Which planet causes weakness?
No planet causes weakness by itself, and physical weakness is a medical matter, so please see a doctor for symptoms. In kundli language a weak Lagna lord, Moon or Sun is read for vitality themes. The [free Health Prediction calculator](/calculators/free-health-prediction-calculator) is a chart-based guide, not a diagnosis.
Does a weak planet need a gemstone?
Not first. Understand the weakness, try the free routine for that planet, check the dasha timing and test fit with the [free Gemstone Suitability calculator](/calculators/free-gemstone-suitability-calculator). A wrong stone has real risks, so a gemstone comes last, and only if you ask for it.
When does a weak planet give its result?
Mainly in its own Mahadasha and Antardasha. BPHS Chapter 28 ties dasha results to Ishta and Kashta strength. Find your running periods with the [free Dasha calculator](/calculators/free-dasha-calculator).
What minimum Shadbala does a planet need to be strong?
BPHS gives each planet a stated minimum total of its six strengths and counts a planet that reaches it as strong. Modern tools show this as a ratio, where 1.0 or more means the planet meets its minimum.
