Lagna Chart Explained: Read Your D1 Chart
Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer
A lagna chart is the birth chart drawn for the exact moment you were born, with the rising sign placed in the first house and every planet shown in the sign it occupied. Also called the D1 or rashi chart, it is read house by house, starting with the lagna lord, in North, South or East Indian style.
Deep Dive Analysis
The Lagna Chart in One Minute
A lagna chart is the map of the sky at your birth, drawn from the point of view of the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon. That rising sign becomes the first house, the other eleven signs follow in order, and each planet is placed in the sign it occupied. In Parashari practice it is the first chart opened, because every house, lord and yoga is counted from it. If you do not yet know your rising sign, run the free lagna calculator and come back to read the result here.
What a Lagna Chart Actually Is
The word lagna means the point of the zodiac cut by the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra defines it plainly as the rising of the signs, and says the results for a native are to be judged through the union and separation of the planets from that base.[1] So the chart is not a picture of the planets alone. It is a picture of the planets measured against the sky of one place and one minute. The same planets at the same hour in another city would give a different lagna, which is why the guide on how the lagna is found matters before any reading begins, and the ascendant explainer gives the short version.
Lagna Chart, Birth Chart, Kundali, Rashi Chart: Are They the Same
In everyday use these four names point to almost the same drawing. A kundali or janam kundali is the full birth document, a birth chart is the English name for the diagram, and the lagna chart is that diagram when the rising sign is used as the first house. Software often labels it the rashi chart or the D1 chart, because it is the first of the divisional charts. The complete document also holds dashas, strengths and other charts, which are explained on the Janam Kundali hub page. This page stays on the one diagram and how to read it, and the ascendant explainer covers the concept behind it.
What You Need Before a Chart Can Be Drawn
Three facts decide the chart: the date, the clock time and the place of birth. Date and place fix the planets and the sky, while the clock time fixes which sign is rising, and the rising sign moves on roughly every two hours. A few minutes of error can push a native across a sign boundary and rewrite every house. If the time is uncertain, read the page on birth time accuracy and rectification first, and treat any reading from a doubtful time as provisional. Then enter the data once into the free janam kundali calculator.
The Twelve Boxes: Signs, Houses and Planets
Every lagna chart is the same twelve-part grid wearing a different layout. Each part is a sign of thirty degrees, each also works as a house, and each may hold zero, one or many planets. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes drawing a separate set of house boxes for each special lagna and placing the planets in the signs where they stand, exactly as in the ordinary lagna chart.[12] Keep two questions apart at all times: which sign is in this box, and which house number is this box. The two answers are fixed in different ways in different styles. The 12 houses guide lists what each house governs.
North Indian Style: Fixed Houses, Moving Signs
In the North Indian chart the houses are fixed and the signs move. The top central diamond is always the first house, and the others run anticlockwise, so the fourth house is always on the left, the seventh at the bottom and the tenth on the right. A small number inside each house tells you which sign sits there, with 1 for Aries up to 12 for Pisces. The number in the top diamond is therefore your lagna sign. Because the house positions never change, the chart shows the four angular houses at a glance, and many readers in North India learn this style first.
How to Read a North Indian Chart in Four Moves
Move one: read the number in the top diamond to learn the lagna sign. Move two: go anticlockwise and note the sign number in every house, which gives the lord of each house. Move three: list the planets sitting in each house, using their short codes. Move four: ask where the lord of the lagna has gone, because its house tells you where the energy of the native is invested. If the lagna lord sits in the fourth house, for example, home, mother and property tend to take priority.[4] The lagna bal calculator then checks how strong that lord actually is.
South Indian Style: Fixed Signs, Moving Lagna
The South Indian chart is a square frame with twelve cells, and here the signs are fixed. Pisces always sits in the top-left cell, Aries beside it, then Taurus and Gemini across the top, Cancer and Leo down the right edge, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius along the bottom from right to left, and Capricorn and Aquarius up the left edge. The lagna is marked by a diagonal slash or the letters Asc in whichever cell holds the rising sign. House one is that cell, and the houses then run clockwise through the signs.
How to Read a South Indian Chart
Start from the marked cell, call it the first house, and count clockwise. The next cell is the second house, and so on, until the twelfth house sits just before the lagna cell. Because the signs are printed in fixed cells, you recognise a sign by its position and not by a number. The style is quick for finding planets in signs, such as Saturn in Libra, and it is common in South India. Many software tools let you switch between the two layouts, so a native may see the same chart as two quite different pictures. Generate yours once with the free janam kundali calculator and compare.
East Indian Style: A Third Layout You Will Meet
The East Indian layout, seen in Bengal and Odisha, is a third arrangement that also keeps the signs fixed and marks the lagna with a slash. Its cells are arranged differently from the South Indian grid, which confuses readers who switch styles without checking labels. Whenever you meet an unfamiliar layout, find the lagna mark or the Asc label first, then identify the houses by counting from there in the direction the chart uses. Do not guess from the position of one planet. A wrong layout assumption is one of the easiest ways to misread an otherwise correct chart, so confirm the lagna with the free lagna calculator.
Same Chart, Three Costumes: Converting Between Styles
A North, South or East Indian chart is the same data drawn three ways. Only the visual rule changes: houses fixed in the North style, signs fixed in the other two. To convert, list each planet with its sign and its distance from the lagna sign counted forward, and then redraw. For example, with Gemini lagna, Cancer is the second house and Capricorn the eighth. If a tool shows different planets in two layouts of the same birth data, the tool has a bug, not astrology. Verify the Moon sign with the free rashi calculator before trusting either drawing.
Abbreviations and Symbols on a Lagna Chart
Planets are shown by short codes. Su is the Sun, Mo the Moon, Ma Mars, Me Mercury, Ju Jupiter, Ve Venus, Sa Saturn, Ra Rahu and Ke Ketu, while Hindi charts use their own initials. An R beside a planet marks retrograde motion, and some tools add letters or arrows for combust, exalted and debilitated planets. Asc or La marks the lagna. Because codes vary between tools, read the legend before the chart. A symbol you do not recognise is a question to ask, not a sign to interpret by feel. The 9 planets guide helps you recall what each planet represents.
Step One: Find the Lagna and Its Lord
Every reading begins with two facts. The first is the lagna sign. The second is the planet that rules that sign, called the lagna lord. If the lagna is Sagittarius, the lord is Jupiter, and the question becomes where Jupiter stands and how strong it is. The lagna lord stands for the native as a whole, so its house and dignity colour the entire chart. The full order of reading is laid out in the guide on how to read a kundali step by step, and the lagna bal guide explains how to measure the strength of the lord.
What the First House Describes
The first house is the lagna itself. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra assigns to it the body, appearance, knowledge, complexion, strength, happiness and sorrow, and the basic nature of the native.[2] That is why two people with the same Moon sign but different lagnas can look and behave so differently. The lagna is the outer door of the personality and the Moon sign is the inner room. When you read a lagna chart, look at the sign, the lord, any planet sitting in the first house and any planet aspecting it before moving on to other houses. The lagna bal calculator gives the strength of this house in numbers.
Second and Fourth Houses: Wealth, Family and Home
The second house, in the classical list, governs wealth, grain, family, metals and jewels.[3] The fourth house governs vehicles, relatives, the happiness of the mother, and land and home.[4] On a lagna chart you read each by checking the sign in that house, the lord of that sign, the planets sitting there and the aspects on it. A strong second house does not guarantee riches without a supportive eleventh, and a pressured fourth does not doom a home. Compare with the wealth combinations guide before judging.
Fifth, Seventh and Tenth Houses: Mind, Partner and Career
The fifth house covers mantra, learning, intellect and children.[5] The seventh covers the spouse, travel, trade and lost things.[6] The tenth covers rulership, profession, honour and the father.[7] These three together carry many of the questions people bring to an astrologer: education and children, marriage and partnership, and career. Read each with its lord and with the planets in or aspecting it, then check timing through dasha. The marriage combinations guide shows how the seventh house is examined in practice, and the career prediction guide does the same for the tenth.
House Names in the Classics
Brihajjataka names the houses in a fixed order, beginning with tanu, kutumba, sahaja, bandhu, putra, ari, patni and marana, and ending with aya and ripha for the eleventh and twelfth.[10] These old names are shorthand for what each house does: the body, the family, the siblings and courage, the relatives and home, the children, the opponents, the partner and the transformations. Learning them makes classical commentary easier to follow, since many texts refer to a house by its name and not its number. A full table of all twelve is in the 12 houses guide.
Kendra, Trikona and Dusthana on the Chart
The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are the kendras, also called kantaka, the pillars of the chart.[11] The first, fifth and ninth are trikonas, the houses of fortune and merit. The sixth, eighth and twelfth are dusthanas, the houses of struggle, hidden matters and loss. A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona becomes especially helpful, which is the logic behind the yogakaraka planet for each lagna page. A dusthana is not a curse. It is a field where effort and patience are needed.
Planets by Sign: Own, Exalted and Debilitated
A planet in its own sign or exalted sign tends to deliver its themes cleanly. Brihajjataka lists the exaltation signs: the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces and Saturn in Libra.[13] The opposite signs are the debilitation signs. Check the dignity of every important planet on the lagna chart before reading its house, and then read its strength with the shadbala guide or the free graha bal calculator. A debilitated planet is not automatically ruined, since cancellation conditions can lift it.
Aspects on the Chart
Every planet aspects the house opposite it, the seventh from where it stands. Mars adds aspects on the fourth and eighth, Jupiter on the fifth and ninth, and Saturn on the third and tenth. Rahu and Ketu are read with different aspect rules by different schools, so state the rule you follow. On a lagna chart, count houses from the planet to see what it touches. A benefic aspect on a house is protective, and a malefic aspect can pressure it. Use the 9 planets guide to recall each nature before you add aspects.
Conjunctions and Yogas You Can Spot at a Glance
When two or more planets share a house they conjoin, and their themes mix. Some conjunctions form named yogas, such as wealth, marriage or power combinations, while others form doshas. A yoga counts only when the planets are well placed and not weakened. Rather than memorising lists, scan the lagna chart for lords of kendras and trikonas sitting together or aspecting each other. The dosh guide explains which combinations are real and which are myths, and the Mangal Dosh in the first house page shows how one common pattern is judged.
Chandra Lagna and Surya Lagna: Reading the Chart Twice
Astrologers often redraw the chart with the Moon sign as the first house, called the chandra lagna, and sometimes with the Sun sign as the first, called the surya lagna. The Moon chart reveals the mind and daily experience, while the Sun chart reveals status and purpose. If a theme appears in the lagna chart and again in the Moon chart, it is a stronger signal. Find your Moon sign with the free rashi calculator and read the chart twice rather than once.
Bhava Chalit: When a Planet Shifts House
The lagna chart places a planet by sign, but houses can also be calculated by their midpoints, which gives the bhava chalit chart. A planet near a sign edge may fall in the next house in that version. For example, a planet in the last degrees of a sign in the fourth house may act as a fifth house planet. This matters most when the lagna degree is very early or very late in a sign. Good software shows both, and a careful reading compares them rather than choosing the one that sounds nicer. Accurate birth time is essential here, as explained in the page on birth time accuracy.
D1 Versus the Divisional Charts
The lagna chart is the first of the sixteen divisional charts. The classical text says the lagna chart gives knowledge of the body, the hora chart wealth, and that other divisions answer other questions.[8] It also assigns the navamsha to the spouse and the dashamsha to great results in worldly life.[9] Think of D1 as the main photograph and the divisional charts as zoomed views. For a practical example of how several are used together, read the page on divisional charts for foreign settlement.
From Chart to Timing: Dasha and Nakshatra
A chart shows promise, and the dasha shows when it ripens. Once the houses and lords are clear, check which planet period is running and which houses that planet rules in your lagna. Use the free dasha calculator for the sequence and the free nakshatra calculator for the Moon star that starts it. A Jupiter period means different things when Jupiter rules the ninth house than when it rules the sixth, as the Guru Mahadasha page shows. Timing without a chart is guesswork, and a chart without timing is only potential.
Six Common Mistakes When Reading a Lagna Chart
Six errors cause most bad readings. First, confusing the Moon sign with the lagna. Second, reading a South Indian chart as if houses were fixed. Third, using a doubtful birth time without saying so. Fourth, judging a planet by house alone without checking sign, aspect and strength. Fifth, ignoring the lagna lord. Sixth, reading a single yoga without checking whether the planets involved are afflicted. Each mistake can be avoided by slowing down and following the order in the step by step kundali guide.
A Worked Illustration with an Invented Chart
Take an invented chart for classroom use only: Sagittarius lagna, with Jupiter in the tenth house in Virgo and Saturn in the second house in Capricorn. The lagna lord Jupiter in a kendra suggests the native places life energy in career and public standing. Saturn in the second asks for patience in family speech and money, with gains building slowly. This is not a real person and it predicts nothing. A real chart needs every house, aspect, dignity and dasha checked together. Use the free kundali strength calculator to see how strengths shift planet by planet.
Free Chart Tools Versus a Real Reading
A free tool draws the chart correctly if the data is right, and that is valuable. It does not weigh the competing signals, notice what the chart is not saying, or connect the diagram to your actual life questions. The page on free kundli software versus a real reading explains the line honestly. Trikaal Vaani uses Swiss Ephemeris calculations so the planetary positions are exact, and the interpretation follows the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.
A Five-Line Upay If the Lagna Lord Looks Weak
Upay: a steady morning routine tied to the lagna lord. How: on the weekday ruled by your lagna lord, wake early, wash, and sit quietly for five minutes reciting the planet mantra learned from a trusted teacher. When: once a week for eleven weeks. How much: five minutes, with no spending needed. Caution: do not wear a gemstone for the lagna lord without a chart check, and do not treat this as a substitute for health or financial advice. To see which planets are weak first, use the free weak planet finder.
Next Steps and About the Author
Draw your chart once, read it in the order above, and write the lagna, lagna lord, Moon sign and current dasha on one line before asking any question. That single line prevents most confusion. This page was written by Rohiit Gupta, Chief Vedic Architect at Trikaal Vaani, who has practised Parashari astrology for more than 16 years. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lagna chart?
A lagna chart is the birth chart in which the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth is placed in the first house, and all planets are shown in the signs they occupied. It is also called the D1 or rashi chart, and every house, lord and yoga is read from it.
How do I find my lagna chart?
You need the date, exact clock time and place of birth. A calculator converts these into the sky at that moment and draws the chart with the rising sign as the first house. Try the free lagna calculator, and confirm the birth time first, since a few minutes can change the lagna.
What is the difference between the lagna chart and the Moon chart?
The lagna chart uses the rising sign as the first house and describes the body, personality and outer life. The Moon chart, or chandra lagna, uses the Moon sign as the first house and describes the mind and daily experience. Good readings use both.
How is a North Indian lagna chart different from a South Indian one?
In the North Indian chart the houses are fixed and the sign numbers move, with the top diamond always the first house. In the South Indian chart the signs are fixed in their cells and the lagna cell is marked. Both show the same planets and the same reading.
How do I read a lagna chart step by step?
First find the lagna sign and its lord. Then note the sign and lord of each house, list the planets in each house, check planet dignity and aspects, and look for yogas and doshas. Finally add the dasha for timing. Following this order avoids most beginner mistakes.
Which houses are kendra, trikona and dusthana?
The kendras are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. The trikonas are the first, fifth and ninth. The dusthanas are the sixth, eighth and twelfth. Kendra and trikona lords are generally supportive, while dusthanas call for effort and patience rather than fear.
Does the lagna chart change if my birth time is wrong?
Yes. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a wrong birth time can give a different lagna and move every planet into a different house. If your time is uncertain, treat readings as provisional and consider birth time rectification before major decisions.
What does the lagna lord tell me?
The lagna lord is the planet ruling your rising sign and represents the native as a whole. Its house, sign and strength show where your energy is invested and how easily you can act on your goals. A well placed lagna lord supports the whole chart.
Is the D1 chart enough to make predictions?
The D1 chart is the main chart, but a sound reading also uses the navamsha and other divisional charts, planetary strength and the dasha timeline. D1 shows the promise of life areas, while the others refine and time them. Relying on one chart alone is incomplete.
Can I trust a free lagna chart calculator?
A calculator that uses accurate ephemeris data will draw the planets and lagna correctly when the birth data is correct. It will not interpret the chart for you or weigh conflicting signals. Use it for the drawing, and use a trained reader for the interpretation.
