Is Your Kundli Strong or Weak? How to Know
Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer
A kundli is strong or weak only when the whole chart is read together, never by one planet. Check ten things: Lagna lord, Moon, kendra-trikona lords, 6-8-12 lords, yogas, afflictions, dasha lord, D-9, Shadbala with Ashtakavarga, and functional benefics. Most charts score mixed, which is normal. The [free Kundali Strength Calculator](/calculators/free-kundali-strength-calculator) checks them from your birth details.
Deep Dive Analysis
How to Know If Your Kundli Is Strong or Weak: The Short Answer
A kundli is strong or weak only when the whole chart is read together; one planet never decides it. Check ten things: the Lagna lord, the Moon, the kendra and trikona lords, the 6th, 8th and 12th lords, yogas, afflictions, the running dasha lord, Navamsa (D-9) support, Shadbala with Ashtakavarga, and which planets are functional benefics. Almost every chart scores mixed, and mixed is normal. A weak point is a place to support, not a verdict. Trikaal Vaani's free Kundali Strength Calculator runs these checks from your birth details, and the sections below teach you to read the result yourself.
Is a Weak Kundli Real or a Myth?
The word 'weak kundli' sounds like a sentence, but classical texts do not treat a chart as one block. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says that when several yogas are present, the strong one overpowers the weak one.[11] Phaladipika adds that even a retrograde or debilitated planet can give kingly results inside a raja-yoga combination.[29] So the honest answer is that every chart has strong and weak places, and the skill is knowing which is which. A heavy point in one area is almost always balanced by a support somewhere else, which the Dosh in Kundli guide shows dosha by dosha.
What Kundli Strength Actually Means
Kundli strength has three layers, and mixing them up causes most of the fear. The first layer is capacity: how well each planet and house lord is placed by sign, house and distance from the Sun. The second is support: the yogas and aspects that connect those planets. The third is timing: which dasha is running and whether its lord can deliver. A chart can be rich in capacity and still wait for its dasha, or run a strong dasha on thin capacity. The explainer on how a kundli works and the step-by-step kundali reading guide cover the base layer in plain language.
Get an Accurate Chart Before You Judge Strength
Every strength test below rests on the Lagna, the Moon's degree and the dasha dates, and all three shift when the birth time is off. A difference of a few minutes can change the Navamsa sign, and a difference of a few hours can change the Lagna itself. Before scoring anything, generate the chart from a reliable time with the free Janam Kundali Calculator and read the note on birth time accuracy and rectification if the time is a guess. Also see why a free kundli software result differs from a real reading, so a calculation gap is not mistaken for a weak chart.
The 10-Point Kundli Strength Scorecard
Score each of ten checks 0, 1 or 2: 0 where the point is under strain with no support, 1 where it is mixed or supported, 2 where it is clearly well placed. The ten are the Lagna lord, the Moon, kendra and trikona lords, dusthana lords, yogas present, afflictions, the current dasha lord, D-9 and vargottama, Shadbala with Ashtakavarga, and functional benefics and malefics. The total runs from 0 to 20. This scorecard is Trikaal Vaani's teaching aid for reading a chart in order; each check is anchored to the classical verses cited below, but the 0-20 total itself is not a classical rule. The free Kundali Strength Calculator fills it for you.
Check 1: Is Your Lagna Lord Strong?
The Lagna lord is the first thing to read because it carries the whole chart. BPHS says a Lagna lord placed in a kendra or trikona always gives bodily comfort, while one afflicted by malefics and sitting in the 8th, 6th or 12th takes that comfort away.[1] If the Lagna lord is Mercury, Jupiter or Venus and stands in a kendra or trikona, the text promises long life, wealth and intelligence.[2] Find your Lagna with the free Lagna Calculator or the guide to finding your lagna from date of birth, then see the Lagna Bal guide for its numeric strength.
What If the Lagna Lord Is Weak? The Classical Rescue
A strained Lagna lord is the most common worry, and it has a clear classical bhanga. BPHS states that even when the 6th, 8th and 12th lords are debilitated or in enemy signs, a Lagna lord that is exalted or in its own sign and aspects the Lagna still gives rulership.[13] So the question is never only 'is the Lagna lord weak' but 'does it have its own sign, a benefic aspect or a strong dispositor'. Score it 1 if any one of these rescues is present. The lagna lord and weak house-lord remedies guide lists the supports house by house.
Check 2: Is Your Moon Strong?
The Moon is the mind and the starting point for dasha, so its condition colours how every strength shows up. BPHS says a Moon in the Lagna joined or aspected by malefics, with no benefic aspect, denies bodily comfort.[3] The same chapter gives the cure in the same breath: benefics joined to or aspecting the Lagna give a good body and comfort.[4] A Moon in its own or a friend's Navamsa by day, aspected by Jupiter, gives wealth and comfort.[16] Find your Moon sign with the free Rashi Calculator and read the Moon sign guide for the full meaning.
Moon Yogas: Adhi Yoga, Gaj Kesari and Kemadruma
Moon-based yogas weigh heavily, since BPHS says a Chandra yoga overrides the fruit of other yogas and gives its own result.[14] Adhi Yoga forms when benefics stand in the 6th, 7th and 8th from the Moon, and it gives a ruler, minister or commander according to strength.[15] Kemadruma is defined by an empty field around the Moon, and the defining verse itself adds a kendra condition from the Lagna, so it is read only with the whole chart.[17] The text lists poor learning and poverty for it,[18] which is why Jupiter's aspect on the Moon or a planet in a kendra is checked before anyone worries. See Gaj Kesari Yoga and the free Nakshatra Calculator for the Moon's star.
Check 3: Kendra and Trikona Lords
Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the pillars of a chart and trikonas (1, 5, 9) are its fortune. BPHS calls the Lagna special because it is both, and notes that the 5th and 9th are the houses of wealth.[5] It also says lords of trikonas give good results, while benefics who own kendras do not give their usual good and malefics who own kendras do no harm.[7] So a strong 5th or 9th lord scores well, and a benefic kendra lord is read with that exception. Locate every lord in the 12 houses guide and the houses in astrology page.
When Kendra and Trikona Lords Join: Yogakaraka Strength
The strongest supports in a chart are links between a kendra lord and a trikona lord. BPHS says that when they stand in each other's signs or together in one sign, a yoga forms.[9] When they also aspect each other fully, they become mutual yogakarakas and the native becomes a ruler or a famous person.[10] You do not need a royal chart to benefit; the same link in ordinary form gives steady, recognised progress in the area of those houses. Check whether any such pair exists in your chart with the Raj Yoga page, the guide to finding rajyog in a kundali and the yogakaraka planet page.
Check 4: 6th, 8th and 12th Lords
Dusthana lords are where most charts feel strain, so read them calmly. BPHS names the 7th and 10th as houses of special happiness and calls the lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th malefic in result.[6] That does not make those houses bad; it says those lords bring effort rather than ease. The strain lifts when the same lord is strong, aspects the Lagna, or forms a reversal yoga, as the Vipreet Raja Yoga guide and the Vipreet Raj Yoga page explain. Score 2 when dusthana lords sit in dusthanas or are strong, 1 when mixed, and 0 only when they afflict the Lagna lord with no relief.
Check 5: Which Yogas Are Present in Your Chart
Yogas are the visible support in a kundli, so count the ones that are formed by strong planets. BPHS lists the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, where Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn stands strong in its own or exalted sign in a kendra.[26] When many yogas compete, the strongest planet among them is the doer and gives the result.[20] Look also at wealth combinations in the dhan yog guide and the Dhan Yoga page, because wealth yogas add to the score only when their planets are not combust or defeated. Score 2 for one or more strong yogas, 1 for weak ones, 0 for none visible.
Check 6: Afflictions and Yoga-Breakers
A yoga is only as good as the planets that make it, and BPHS says yogas born of combust, defeated, debilitated or weak planets are yoga-destroying.[12] That is the classical reason to check combustion, planetary war and debilitation before celebrating any yoga; the combustion page gives degrees by planet. The damage is never total, because a debilitation is cancelled under the rules below. Do not confuse popular doshas with strength loss: check them separately with the free Manglik Dosh Calculator, read whether Mangal Dosh is real and the Kaal Sarp Dosh explainer, and treat Saturn's transit through the free Sade Sati Calculator.
Check 7: Is Your Current Dasha Lord Strong?
A strong chart can still feel slow in a weak dasha, and a modest chart can rise in a strong one, so the dasha lord is a core check. BPHS says that whichever is greater, a planet's good strength or its bad strength, decides whether its dasha and house results are good or bad.[21] In plain terms: look at the lord of your running Mahadasha and Antardasha, its sign, house and aspects, and its Shadbala. Get the dates from the free Dasha Calculator and the Vimshottari dasha calculation guide. The Mahadasha explained page shows what each lord tends to do.
Check 8: Navamsa (D-9) and Vargottama
The Navamsa is the chart's second opinion on every planet. Phaladipika defines vargottama as the Navamsa falling in the planet's own birth-chart sign, which means the planet is stable in both charts.[27] A vargottama Lagna lord or Moon scores well because its message is the same in D-1 and D-9. A planet that is weak in D-1 but exalted or own-sign in D-9 often recovers in its dasha. Read the Navamsa chart guide for how to compare the two charts, and note that D-9 is checked after the main chart, never in place of it. Score 2 if the Lagna lord, Moon or dasha lord is vargottama or strong in D-9.
Neecha Bhanga: How a Debilitated Planet Is Rescued
A debilitated planet is the most frightening label in a chart and the best-known place for a rescue. Phaladipika's neecha-bhanga rule says that when a debilitated planet's sign lord and exaltation-sign lord both stand in a kendra from the Moon or Lagna, the native becomes a righteous, powerful ruler.[28] The wider point is that debilitation is read with its cancellation, never alone. Check your own planets against the Neech Bhang Raj Yoga page and the planetary dignity guide before scoring any neecha planet 0.
Check 9: Shadbala Without the Maths
Shadbala is a planet's six-part strength: position, direction, time, motion, natural and aspect. BPHS says a planet whose total reaches the stated minimum is counted strong, and more than that is full strength.[19] For the whole-chart verdict you do not recalculate it by hand; you check whether your Lagna lord, Moon and dasha lord clear their minimum, and that is all. The full method is already covered in the Shadbala planet strength guide and the Shadbala learn page, and the numbers come from the free Graha Bal Calculator. Use Weak Planet Finder when one planet needs a closer look.
Ashtakavarga in One Page
Ashtakavarga counts the benefic points (bindus) each sign receives, and the total across all planets is the Sarvashtakavarga. BPHS says signs with more than thirty points are auspicious and signs with twenty-five to thirty are middling.[22] Signs with fewer points are called painful, and the same text advises avoiding such signs for important auspicious work, which is a practical, fear-free use.[23][24] A Lagna sign that holds more points than the rest points to comfort, and the verse says the reverse brings poverty, which is why a low-point Lagna is read with the dasha and the other supports in this guide, not alone.[25] The average across twelve signs is about 28, so compare each sign against that, not against thirty.
Check 10: Functional Benefics and Malefics
The same planet can help one Lagna and stress another, so planets are read by what they own. BPHS lists Jupiter and Venus as auspicious, the Moon as middling, Mercury as neutral, and the Sun, Saturn and Mars as the natural malefics.[8] It then adjusts by house rule: lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th act as malefics, and kendra benefics lose their gloss.[7] Mark which planets are functional benefics for your Lagna and whether they are strong. Learn the pattern in the functional benefic and malefic page, the 9 planets in a kundali guide and the Navagraha page.
How to Add Up Your Score
Add the ten numbers. A total of 15 to 20 means the chart is well supported at most points, and the work is to use that strength in the right dasha. A total of 9 to 14 is the usual mixed chart, where a few areas shine and a few need effort. A total of 0 to 8 does not mean the chart is poor; it means more of the supports are hidden or waiting, and the dasha and bhanga checks matter more. Take your lowest-scoring points and read them against the rescues above. The free Kundali Strength Calculator reports the same ten points together so you can compare.
A Worked Example of Reading the Scorecard
Take an illustrative chart, not a client's: the Lagna lord sits in the 10th (2), the Moon is in a friendly sign with Jupiter's aspect (2), one kendra-trikona link exists (2), a dusthana lord sits in the 12th (1), one Dhan yoga is present but its planet is combust (1), a neecha planet has no clear cancellation (0), the dasha lord is strong (2), D-9 supports the Moon (2), Shadbala is borderline (1) and the functional benefics are mixed (1). The total is 14, a mixed-to-good chart with one place to support and one yoga to protect. Nothing here is fate; each low score has its own next step.
Exalted and Combust Together: Capacity Without Output
One result confuses many readers: a planet that is exalted and combust at the same time. It is neither strong nor weak. The correct reading is that the capacity is full but it does not translate into visible results, because the Sun's glare hides the planet's work. Score it 1 and look for the cause of the hidden output, such as the Navamsa sign or a benefic aspect. The same applies to a weak planet with a bhanga: capacity exists, delivery is delayed. See the Weak Planet Finder guide and the combustion page to test each planet in your own chart.
Strong in One Life Area, Weak in Another
A chart rarely scores the same for career, marriage, money and health. The 10th lord and its dasha speak for work, the 7th for marriage, the 2nd and 11th for money and the 6th with the Lagna lord for health, so a single total hides these differences. Read your overall score first, then read the house that matters to you now. For health, the free Health Prediction Calculator and the Mental Wellbeing page look at the Lagna lord and Moon, while the career prediction page shows how the 10th is read. A low score in one area can sit beside a high score in another.
Common Mistakes When Judging Kundli Strength
The first mistake is judging by one planet, such as Saturn or Mars, instead of the Lagna lord and Moon. The second is counting every aspect as an affliction. The third is calling a debilitated planet weak without checking its neecha-bhanga. The fourth is ignoring the dasha, since a planet's results arrive in its own period. The fifth is trusting a score from a wrong birth time. The sixth is buying a gemstone on the day a weakness is found, and the Strong Planets Don't Need Gemstones page explains why that is the wrong order. Use the free Gemstone Suitability Calculator only after the earlier steps are done.
Simple Remedies When a Check Scores Low
Remedies must be easy to start today, so here are two in the Trikaal Vaani five-line format. For a low Moon score: 1. What: sit quietly for five minutes after offering a glass of water to a plant, and repeat 'Om Somaya Namah' eleven times. 2. When: Monday, 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning. 3. Cost: free. 4. Days: eleven Mondays, and stop. 5. Why for you: your Moon is the mind and the dasha clock, so a steadier mind helps every other check. For a low Lagna lord or dasha lord score, use that planet's own weekday in the same way, and keep the offering to food or water of ten to twenty rupees. No gemstone is part of these steps; see the weak house-lord remedies guide for more.
How Often Should You Re-Check Kundli Strength
Your natal chart does not change, but its strength shows differently in each dasha, so re-check at three points: when a new Mahadasha starts, when an Antardasha with a weak lord begins, and before a major decision. Do not re-run the whole scorecard weekly; the natal points stay the same, and only the dasha and transit layers move. Keep the first result as your base, and note which point scored lowest. The free Dasha Calculator gives the dates for the next change, and the free Kundali Strength Calculator lets you compare the base result against the new period without redoing the workings.
How to Use the Free Kundali Strength Calculator
Enter your date, exact time and place of birth in the free Kundali Strength Calculator. It reads the same ten points taught here, using Swiss Ephemeris positions, and shows each result with a plain-language note. Read the lowest-scoring point first, then check the rescue for it in this guide. If the verdict shows one planet as the weak link, open the Weak Planet Finder for that planet, and use the Lagna Bal Calculator when the Lagna lord is the question. The calculator gives the picture; this guide gives the meaning, and the two together are the full check.
When a Human Reading Helps
A calculator reads the rules; a human reading weighs them. Seek one when two checks point in opposite directions, when the birth time is uncertain, when a major dasha change is close, or when you want the next step tailored to your own chart. Trikaal Vaani's work follows the Parashara method with Swiss Ephemeris accuracy, and the chart is read in the order set out here, so you will recognise each step. If you prefer to continue alone, the step-by-step kundali guide and the Janam Kundali page take you through the rest of the chart at your own pace.
Quick Recap: Is Your Kundli Strong or Weak
Read the Lagna lord, the Moon, kendra and trikona lords, dusthana lords, yogas, afflictions, the dasha lord, D-9, Shadbala with Ashtakavarga, and functional benefics, then total the ten scores. Most charts land in the middle, and the middle is a working chart, not a weak one. Every low point has a classical rescue and a simple remedy that costs nothing or ten to twenty rupees. Start with the free Kundali Strength Calculator, then read the Shadbala guide and weak planet guide for the planet-level view.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my kundli is strong or weak?
Check ten points together: Lagna lord, Moon, kendra and trikona lords, 6th-8th-12th lords, yogas, afflictions, the running dasha lord, D-9 vargottama, Shadbala with Ashtakavarga, and functional benefics. Score each 0, 1 or 2 and read the total as a guide, not a verdict. The [free Kundali Strength Calculator](/calculators/free-kundali-strength-calculator) does this from your birth details.
What makes a kundli strong?
A strong Lagna lord, a supported Moon, linked kendra and trikona lords, yogas formed by unafflicted planets, a strong dasha lord and D-9 support make a kundli strong. No chart has all of these, and a few are enough.
What does a weak kundli mean?
It means some supports are thin or delayed, not that life is blocked. Classical texts pair every weakness with a cancellation rule, and a strong yoga overpowers a weak one. Support the lowest point and re-check at the next dasha.
Is the Lagna lord or the Moon more important for kundli strength?
Both come first. The Lagna lord shows the body and overall direction, while the Moon shows the mind and starts the dasha count. If both are supported, the rest of the chart has a firm base.
Can a weak planet still give good results?
Yes. Phaladipika notes that even retrograde or debilitated planets can give kingly results in raja-yoga combinations, and a neecha-bhanga rule cancels debilitation when the sign lord and exaltation lord stand in a kendra.
What is a good score on the 10-point scorecard?
A total of 15 to 20 is well supported, 9 to 14 is the usual mixed chart, and 0 to 8 means more supports are hidden or waiting. The scorecard is a teaching aid, not a classical rule, so use it to find the next step.
Does Shadbala alone tell me if my kundli is strong?
No. Shadbala measures each planet, but whole-chart strength also needs yogas, the dasha lord, D-9 and house lordship. Use Shadbala for the Lagna lord, Moon and dasha lord, and read the rest alongside.
How is Ashtakavarga used to judge chart strength?
Signs with more than thirty bindus are called auspicious and those with twenty-five to thirty are middling. Compare your Lagna sign and key houses against that, and prefer high-point signs for important work.
Do Manglik Dosh or Sade Sati make my kundli weak?
Not by themselves. They are specific conditions with their own bhanga rules and are checked separately. A chart with Manglik Dosh or Sade Sati can still score high on the ten points.
Should I wear a gemstone if my kundli is weak?
Not first. Start with the free, simple steps and the classical rescue checks, and consider a gemstone only after the chart is fully read and a suitable planet is confirmed, since a wrong stone can cause real harm.
How often should I check my kundli strength?
Once as a base, then again when a new Mahadasha or a weak-lord Antardasha begins, and before a major decision. The natal points do not change; only timing and transits do.
