Free Kundli Maker: How Your Chart Is Built
Trikaal Sandesh — Direct Answer
A kundli maker turns your date, exact time and place of birth into a sidereal birth chart. It computes the ascendant, the twelve houses, nine planet positions, the Moon nakshatra and the Vimshottari dasha table. The result is only as accurate as the birth time, so check the three inputs first and then read the chart.
Deep Dive Analysis
Kundli Maker: Quick Answer
A kundli maker is software that turns your date, time and place of birth into a Vedic birth chart. It places the ascendant, the twelve houses, nine grahas and the Moon nakshatra on a sidereal zodiac, then builds the Vimshottari dasha table from the Moon. The chart is only as reliable as the birth time you enter, because the ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. This page explains each step, shows what the BPHS says about the parts of a chart, and gives a five-minute accuracy check. To try it now, open the free kundli maker and read the full hub at Janam Kundali.
What a Kundli Maker Actually Does
Behind the clean chart on screen, a kundli maker does four jobs. It converts your local birth time to universal time, it finds the position of every graha with an ephemeris, it applies an ayanamsha to move from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac, and it divides the circle into twelve houses from the rising degree. Everything you read later, from the dasha to marriage timing, is built on those four steps. A weak step at the start spoils every later layer, which is why how to read a kundali step by step begins by checking the chart and not by making predictions. Our own engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris for positions.
The Five Inputs Every Kundli Maker Needs
Five inputs matter: date of birth, time of birth, place of birth, the time zone in force at that place on that day, and the ayanamsha used. Name and gender change nothing in the chart itself. Most free tools ask for only three and guess the rest, and that is where silent errors begin. If a tool does not show you the time zone and ayanamsha it used, you cannot judge its output. If any input is uncertain, read birth time accuracy and rectification before trusting the result, and use the Moon sign check from the rashi calculator as a first guard.
Date of Birth: Why the Calendar Day Is Not Enough
The date fixes the Sun, Mercury and Venus roughly, and the slow planets almost exactly, but it cannot fix the Moon or the ascendant. The Moon covers about 13 degrees in a day, which is close to a full nakshatra, so a birth near midnight can land in a different sign or star depending on the hour. Dates written in the Indian lunar calendar must be converted to the Gregorian date first, since every ephemeris works in that system. If you were born after midnight, use the date shown on the clock and not the date of the previous evening. A quick Moon sign check shows whether the date was handled correctly.
Time of Birth: The Input That Moves Everything
The ascendant rises through all twelve signs in a day, so it moves roughly one degree every four minutes and changes sign about every two hours on average. A ten minute error can shift divisional charts, and an hour of error can change the whole lagna. Use the time from the birth certificate or hospital record, and note whether it was rounded to five or fifteen minutes. If the family time is only approximate, mark the chart as provisional until you test it against known life events. The method is in birth time accuracy and rectification, and the lagna maths is in how to find your lagna.
Place of Birth: Latitude, Longitude and Time Zone
The rising sign depends on where on Earth you were born, because latitude changes how fast each sign rises and longitude sets the local sidereal time. A good kundli maker takes the town from a search list, reads its coordinates, and applies the time zone that was in force on your birth date. For most births in India that is Indian Standard Time, but older records may follow a different local time, and a birth abroad needs the local zone of that country. Enter the town of birth and not the town where you live now. A mistake of a few hundred kilometres can shift the ascendant by a degree or more.
Sidereal Versus Tropical: Why Indian Charts Differ
Western tools use the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars. The gap between the two is the ayanamsha, and in 2026 it is about 24 degrees, which is why many people find their Sun sign has moved back by one sign in the Vedic chart. Neither system is wrong, but they answer different questions, and classical Parashari rules such as dashas and nakshatra results are defined on the sidereal frame. A kundli maker that does not state its zodiac should not be used for Vedic reading. See lagna chart explained for the layouts that sit on this frame.
Ayanamsha: The Number Behind the Sidereal Zodiac
Ayanamsha is the angular gap between the tropical and sidereal starting points. Several versions exist, and the Lahiri value is the standard in India, which we use. The difference between common versions is small, but it can be enough to move a planet across a sign boundary or a Moon across a nakshatra edge. That is why two good kundli makers can disagree on a chart for the same person when one uses Lahiri and another uses a different value. Always note the ayanamsha before comparing outputs. For the nakshatra part, the nakshatra calculator guide shows how edge cases are handled.
From Inputs to Ascendant: The Lagna Calculation
Once the local time is converted to universal time, the software computes the local sidereal time for your longitude and then finds which zodiac degree is rising on the eastern horizon. That degree is the ascendant, or lagna. It starts the first house, and the signs follow in order for the other eleven. Because the lagna sets the house lordship of every planet, it controls which grahas are friendly, which are difficult and which one is a yogakaraka for you. You can verify yours with the free lagna calculator and read why it matters in the ascendant explained. The lagna lord, covered in lagnesh in the twelve houses, is the next thing to read.
The Twelve Houses a Kundli Maker Draws
A chart is divided into twelve houses, each linked to an area of life. The BPHS says the first house, the lagna, is examined for the body, appearance, knowledge, complexion, strength, happiness, sorrow and nature.[7] The second house is examined for wealth, grain, family and similar resources.[10] The remaining houses carry the other themes such as siblings, home, children, enemies, partnership, longevity, fortune, career, gains and losses. A kundli maker only draws the structure. Reading it takes judgement, which is covered in the twelve houses of the kundali.
Planet Positions: Sign, Degree and Nakshatra
For each of the nine grahas, a kundli maker lists the sign, the degree inside the sign, the nakshatra and pada, and whether the planet is retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are computed as lunar nodes and always sit exactly opposite each other. The degree matters because strength, exaltation, combustion and many yogas depend on it, not only on the sign. Use the table to confirm basics, for example that Mercury is never far from the Sun. For a walk through each graha, read the nine planets in a kundali and the pages on Rahu and Ketu.
The Moon Nakshatra and Why It Starts Your Dasha
The Moon degree decides the birth nakshatra, one of 27 divisions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. The lord of that nakshatra gives the first Vimshottari mahadasha, and how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra decides how much of that first dasha was left at birth. This is why a Moon error of even one degree can shift every dasha date by several months. Check yours with the free nakshatra calculator and learn the dasha method in how to calculate Vimshottari dasha.
North Indian, South Indian and East Indian Chart Styles
The same chart can be drawn in three common layouts. In the North Indian style the houses keep fixed positions and the signs move, so the top diamond is always the first house. In the South Indian style the signs keep fixed positions and the lagna is marked. The East Indian style is common in Bengal and Odisha. All three show identical information, so pick the one you can read fastest and do not compare charts across styles by eye. The layouts and how to move between them are explained in lagna kundli and chart styles.
Divisional Charts: The Sixteen Vargas
Beyond the main chart, the BPHS says Brahma taught sixteen varga charts.[1] The text lists them as the sign chart, hora, drekkana, chaturthamsha, saptamsha, navamsha, dashamsha, the twelve-part chart and shodashamsha.[2] It continues with vimshamsha, the 24-part, the 27-part, trimshamsha, the 40-part, the 45-part and the 60-part divisions.[3] A good kundli maker shows at least the navamsha D9, and a serious one shows the others. Each chart zooms into one life theme. Our engine computes them from the same positions, and the navamsha logic is covered in the Janam Kundali hub.
What Each Varga Is Used For
Chapter 7 gives the use of each chart. The lagna shows the body and the hora shows wealth and similar gains.[4] The drekkana shows happiness from siblings, the chaturthamsha is used for fortune, and the saptamsha for children and grandchildren.[5] The navamsha is used for the spouse, the dashamsha for great results in life work, and the twelve-part chart for the parents.[6] This is why a kundli maker that shows only the main chart gives a thin picture of marriage or career. For marriage reading, continue with Vivah yoga combinations, and for work see career prediction from kundli.
Special Ascendants: Bhava Lagna and Hora Lagna
Some kundli makers also compute special lagnas. The BPHS describes the bhava lagna as counted from sunrise, advancing with time up to the moment of birth.[8] It describes the hora lagna as advancing in steps of two and a half ghatikas from sunrise, which is about one hour.[9] These are used as secondary reference points, mainly for wealth and general direction after the main lagna is settled. If your tool lists them, treat them as extras and not as a replacement for the rising sign. A full note on one of them is in Hora Lagna explained.
The Dasha Table: What a Good Kundli Maker Shows
After the chart, look for the dasha table. A good one lists the Vimshottari mahadasha sequence with start and end dates, the antardasha inside the current period, and the balance of the first dasha at birth. The system covers 120 years across nine lords, and the Moon nakshatra sets the starting point. Some tools also add the pratyantar level or a second system. See the pratyantar dasha calculator guide and the yogini dasha calculator guide for the deeper levels. Our free dasha calculator gives the dates in a single view.
Yogas and Doshas: What Is Computed and What Is Judged
A kundli maker can detect formal patterns by rule, for example Manglik dosha, Kaal Sarp dosha, Pitra dosha and some yogas. What it cannot do is weigh them. Whether a dosha is strong, cancelled or irrelevant depends on degrees, aspects, house lords and the dasha running now. Treat a computed label as a question and not as a verdict. The honest sequence is to detect, then judge, then act. Start with dosh in kundli, the complete guide and the guide to shubh and ashubh yogas, and use the free Manglik calculator and Kaal Sarp calculator for quick checks.
How to Check a Kundli Maker Output in Five Minutes
Run five quick checks. First, confirm the Sun sign is the sidereal one, which sits one sign behind the Western Sun sign for births from roughly the 21st of one month to the 13th of the next. Second, confirm Mercury and Venus are close to the Sun. Third, confirm Rahu and Ketu are exactly opposite. Fourth, confirm the Moon nakshatra matches a second tool. Fifth, confirm the ascendant against your known birth time and the lagna calculator. If all five agree, the basics are sound. Planet strength checks sit in how to know if your kundli is strong or weak.
Why Two Kundli Makers Show Different Charts
Differences usually come from five sources: a different ayanamsha, a different time zone rule, a rounded birth time, a different house system, or a tool that is not truly sidereal. The house system is the one most people miss. Many Vedic tools use the whole-sign system, in which each sign is one house, while Western tools use Placidus or similar systems that cut houses at unequal widths. When the charts disagree, do not average them. Find which input differs, fix it, and run both again. The longer story is in free kundli software versus a real reading.
Birth Time Unknown: What You Can Still Do
If the exact time is not known, you can still use a kundli maker in a reduced way. The Moon sign and nakshatra stay mostly reliable unless the Moon sits near an edge, and the slow planets stay almost fixed. Dasha dates may be off by months. A noon chart, which many tools use as a default, should not be used for house or ascendant reading. Treat it as a Moon-chart reading and aim to narrow the time through life events with a rectification. A practical guide is birth time accuracy and rectification, and an expert review is available through kundli reading near me online.
What a Kundli Maker Cannot Do
A kundli maker cannot tell you exactly when something will happen, cannot weigh strength against context, and cannot promise outcomes. It cannot notice that your family time is wrong, and it cannot merge your chart with your real life. It also cannot read the Moon chart, divisional charts and dasha together the way a trained reader does. What it can do is give you a precise, repeatable starting point. For planet strength numbers, use the Shadbala guide, the free kundali strength calculator and the weak planet finder.
Common Mistakes When Entering Birth Details
The common mistakes are choosing AM instead of PM, entering the date in month-day order instead of day-month order, using the current city instead of the birth town, using 12:00 as a default, and ignoring a birth just after midnight. Another is copying a time from a horoscope sheet that was rounded long ago. Re-enter the data twice and compare the ascendant. If it changes, the input is the issue and not the tool. Having your Moon sign and nakshatra checked on two tools is the fastest guard, and the rashi calculator is the quickest one.
Why the Birth Chart Never Changes but Predictions Do
A birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at your birth. Dashas and transits, which move with time, are layered over it for timing. When someone says their kundli changed, the input or the tool changed and not the sky. Transit questions such as Saturn over the Moon are answered by the Sade Sati calculator, while the running period comes from the dasha table. Keeping the two apart prevents the common error of reading a transit as if it were a birth promise.
Retrograde, Combustion and Other Flags
A good kundli maker marks retrograde planets, combust planets, planets in own or exalted signs, and planets in debilitation. Each flag is a pointer and not a conclusion. A retrograde planet is not weak by default, and a combust planet can still give results through its house. Use the flags to decide where to look next, then check the sign, house and aspects. The guide to combustion explains one flag in depth, and the graha bal calculator gives a number you can compare.
Privacy: What We Ask and Do Not Ask
A kundli maker needs only the birth details to compute a chart. It does not need your bank details, your Aadhaar number or your phone contacts, and a tool that asks for them is not a kundli maker. We ask for the date, time, place and, for readings, a few life questions that change the interpretation. Keep family names out of any chart you share publicly, and share a screenshot instead of the form link. The same standard applies when you request a kundli matching report for another person.
After the Chart: Your First Three Things to Read
After the chart loads, read three things in order. First, the ascendant and its lord, since the lord shows where life energy is directed. Second, the Moon sign and nakshatra, since they set the mind and the dasha. Third, the current mahadasha and antardasha, since they set the timing of events. Only then look at yogas and doshas. This order prevents panic over a single label. It also prepares you for yogakaraka planets for each lagna, which tells you which planet helps you most.
Using Your Kundli for Marriage, Career and Money
Once the basics are right, you can ask life questions. For marriage, the seventh house, its lord, Venus or Jupiter and the navamsha are read together, as in when will I get married. For work, the tenth house and its lord with the dasha are used, as in when will I get a job. For money, the second and eleventh houses are used, along with dhan yog combinations. Each answer depends on the quality of the chart behind it, so repeat the five checks before you act on a prediction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a kundli maker?
A kundli maker is a tool that converts your date, time and place of birth into a Vedic birth chart. It shows the ascendant, twelve houses, nine planet positions, the Moon nakshatra and the Vimshottari dasha dates. The quality of the result depends on the accuracy of the birth time and the zodiac and ayanamsha the tool uses.
Is a free kundli maker accurate?
A free tool can be fully accurate if it uses a real ephemeris, the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha, and the correct time zone for your birth date. What it cannot fix is a wrong input. If your birth time is approximate, the ascendant and divisional charts may be wrong even when the maths is perfect.
Which details are needed to make a kundli?
You need the date of birth, the time of birth, and the place of birth. The tool then adds the time zone and ayanamsha. Name and gender do not change the chart. If the time is unknown, you can still get the Moon sign and nakshatra, but the ascendant should not be trusted.
Why does my kundli show a different Sun sign from my Western horoscope?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The gap, called the ayanamsha, is about 24 degrees in 2026. Because of it, the Sun often sits one sign earlier in a Vedic chart than in a Western one, and the Moon sign and ascendant can shift too.
How do I know if my kundli is correct?
Check five things. The Sun must be in the sidereal sign, Mercury and Venus must be close to the Sun, Rahu and Ketu must be exactly opposite, the Moon nakshatra must match a second tool, and the ascendant must fit your known birth time. If all five agree, the basics of the chart are sound.
Does the BPHS mention divisional charts?
Yes. Chapter 6 of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says there are sixteen varga charts and lists them, and Chapter 7 states what each is used for, such as the navamsha for the spouse and the dashamsha for life work. The verse numbers are given in the Granth Sandarbh box on this page.
Can I make a kundli without the exact birth time?
You can make a partial one. The Moon sign and nakshatra are usually reliable, and the slow planets are almost fixed. The ascendant, houses and divisional charts need the time. Use a rectification method with known life events if you want to narrow the time before reading house-based results.
What is the difference between a kundli maker and a kundli reading?
A kundli maker computes the chart. A kundli reading interprets it by weighing house lords, planet strength, aspects and the running dasha. The first is mechanical and repeatable, and the second needs judgement and context. Most people should use the free maker first and then ask a specific question.
Why do two kundli makers give different results?
The usual reasons are a different ayanamsha, a different time zone rule, a rounded birth time, or a different house system. Compare the settings before comparing the charts. If the inputs and settings are the same, the planet positions should agree to within a small fraction of a degree.
Is it safe to enter my birth details in a kundli maker?
Birth details are the only data needed to compute a chart. A tool should not ask for bank details, ID numbers or contacts. Prefer tools that state their ephemeris, zodiac and ayanamsha clearly, and avoid sharing the form link of a chart that carries family names.
